Thank you for sharing, tkdrobert, that is all kinds of awesome!

I am familiar with the diciplines, and weapons you mention, except for Shudo Kan - that's a new one for me, and after some research, it seems an interesting style.  There are thousands of styles, so there are still many to learn about...

That completely sucks about your Jingum, but it is understandable  -- That damn virus is problematic on a few fronts.  I read that some believe it is going to affect hardware such as GPU's for purchasing as well.

And, 'Amen' to your last sentence.

Forgot I had Toonycam Pro, and apparently that's a thing which is no longer for sale.

Anyway, here it is mixed with PWToon, instead of using PWToon's internal outlines. Honestly, the extra rigmarole and render time isn't getting me a much different result than just using PWToon by itself, save for visible outlines on the hair.

Cool.  I remember ToonCamy but I never picked it up.

Honestly, its super fiddly and not worth using on stuff where you need to change scenery and figures out, like if you're rapidly producting panels for a webcomic, because adding new stuff after you've implemented the system screws up the outlines. I wonder if that's why it eventually got pulled.

Here is a concept for a Voltron-like robot.  This was suppose to be a quick project, but LineRender did a lousy job this time.  I had to import this image into my iPad and fix a lot of the lines.  I modified the base model of this robot.  The shoulders were added from some greebles I have.  The upper legs were also modified with a combination of greebles and primitives.  This is the 1st time I've successfully used greebles to my satisfaction.

Definitely getting a Vehicle Voltron vibe off it.

Yeah Vehicle Voltron had WAY too many.

At the end of the day PWToon and some Photoshop postwork ends up outdoing everything else I try.

This has a very cool look to it. The lines are nice and clean (so great job on the clean-up). Just now noticed the guy at the bottom – gantastic sense of scale to the piece.

Your addition of the little bits is definitely interesting. All in all, a really solid job.

Thanks.  This model was almost perfect.  I had to modify it to make it closer to perfect.  I've tried to kitbash other models with no sucess.  I might try some other modifications and/or change the colors around a bit.  I was thinking I might do a short comic staring him as practice for my bigger Seven Sentinels project.  I'm trying to come up with cool name for him.  If any of you have a suggestion for a name, let me know.

Name for the person or the Mech?

And yeah, I can appreciate the problems with kitbashing. I'm struggling to find a spaceship that suits both story and aesthetics. Specifically:

    • I need a ship designed for a standard crew of three or four, plus room for cargo or passengers.
    • I also want something that has some sharp angles on it, as that tends to look better with my process than just smooth curves.

Yesterday I combined about 8 ships in an attempt to find something I like in terms of size and look. Tonight: more of the same. And since the ship is on page 1 of my story, I kinda need to get that nailed down before moving on to other designs.

I'm looking to name the Mech.  I like the Shuttlestar, but it's angles are very sleek.  Does it have to be a Poser model or can it be Daz? How is this one? https://www.daz3d.com/dropship-griffin

Shuttlestar is a great name for a mech. I'll think it over, but I think that's good to go.

The ship needs to be Poser, but... sometimes I can get Poser to import models, and I can always just bring in the base OBJ file and re-rig the various pieces.

The one you sent me looks great. A little bigger than I envisioned, but I've added it to my list. If my current crop of Poser-ready models don't work out, I will definitely come back and consider the one you just showed me. Thanks, and keep your eyes open. If you see anything else, let me know!

I have a bunch of Poser ships, but I think they are all fanart stuff.  I'll have to go threw my Poser runtime.  Look at CGSHARE and Renderoisty.  There are some Poser hips here too, but I can't think of any right now.

    This one mught work

    Heavy Lander (Rendo)

    Not the prettiest...

    Valkrie (Rendo)

HAH! You picked the two ships that are causing me the most conseternation!

You see, I love the exteriors of the Heavy Lander (but it's too small for cargo and/or passengers). And I love the interiors of the Valkrie, but the outside is just butt-ugly. So, I'm probably just going to keep the interiors of the Valkyrie and use a different ship for the exterior shots. As long as they line up, "more or less," I'll be happy.

So far the kit-bashing I've been conducting is keeping the front of the Heavy Lander and adding some other ships behind it. I'm going home to work on some more ships, and then I'll post the most likely contenders.

Here's a test run of a kitbash that kinda works. Not 100%, but the size and general features are okay.

I need to test a few other ships and see what I get.

The front of this one is composed of the "Heavy Lander" model over at R'osity. The back is a pre-built ship that comes wtih the "Space Ship Constructor Set" by Simon 3-D. I literally just scaled these models and shoved them together. Since the Poser Pro 11 Comic Book Preview is about geometry and not textures, there were no issues in that regard.

BUT: What do you think? Most importantly: Does this look like a single model/ship? Or does it look like two different ships that have (literally) been rammed together?

    And here's the mesh itself:

BTW: I was going to post the front and side views, too, but my computer has decided to act up tonight. I think a Windows update is playing havoc with things, so I'm about to reboot. If it doesn't get too late, I'll try posting another mash-up / kitbash that looks promising.

That is a nice image.  I think it looks like one ship.  If you make all of your images this good than you've got a winner.

Elsewhere, tkrobert asked how I created the nebula background, so I thought I'd share that answer with you guys.

It's a remarkably easy process. The ship is, of course, on its own layer(s). So, to create the background:

    1. Set background layer to solid black.
    2. Go to nasa.gov and search their gallery for "nebula." (Their space images are generally free for personal and commercial use - just don't use the NASA logo or photos of people.)
    3. Once you have an image you like (look for things with nice, abstract patterns and high-contrast areas), paste it into your image editing software on a layer between the black background and the ship.
    4. Photoshop/GIMP, etc.: Play around with the following filters: Poster Edges, Stamp, Find Edges. Mix-and-match effects until you get something nice and abstract. You might also want to play around with Levels or Contrast. Then I convert the layer to b&w. Personally, I like the strong posterized look (sharp deleniations between the colors, but you can easily go for a softer, more gentle look).
    5. Adjust the nebula layer's opacity (usually 30% - 50% works well.
    6. Just move the nebula around until it works with the composition.

A side note on composition: In the case of a ship being dead center of the frame, I tend to put the brighter parts behind it, near the exhaust areas. Also, because I planned to use those white motion lines in front of the ship, I left that part of the background completely black (note that there aren't even any stars). I did this to simplify things, because those speed lines quickly clutter things up.

I spent significantly more time playing around with the white lines than I did creating the background (in this case, I used some version of "find edges" filter in Clip Studio Paint (not Photoshop) because I wanted to do all the work in CSP.

Thanks! I'm kind of happy with it, but this is definitely the sort of thing that requires other opinions. There are two other similar kitbashes that I want to work with tonight. It has some interesting features that could make it fun to work with. I'll definitely want your opinion on that, too.

You did a GREAT job of putting the interior together for that ship! Nicely done and pretty realistic in terms of usable space. The ship itself is a bit boxy for my needs, though. In order for it to render well, I need a few more angles on it But thanks for the tip – nightshade3D has some great stuff I'm going to keep an eye on for future acquisitions (btw, I have a bunch of his weapons – they are pretty cool).

Here's another take on the ship, and it did not go as well.

I think the proportions on the first ship were just better. This one looks a bit stubby to me. And I thought I would like that "stair step" look behind the front ship because it catches a lot of shadows, but I think it just looks odd here. I'm going to give it one more shot by including both the stair steps and the smaller triple rear engines from the first version.

Kitbash 3. Although I do think the extra length works, this still doesn't have the same coolness factor as the first design.

By the way, just in case you're thinking that I had "beginner's luck" with that design, please keep in mind that I probably made 8 different designs before that one. I'm just not showing you any of the stuff that's not even in the running. Thoughts and comments on all three ships is greatly appreciated.

Next version, and this time I take a completely different take on the rear of the ship.

There's a lot to like with this version, but I need to run a few more renders from different angles to see if those curved elements catch light and shadows the way I expect them to, and I need to see if those fins work well. This is currently my second favorite design.
