And these another experiments to creating Toon/Anime BG from 3D and Photoshop

This is a very impressive style. I love how soft your colors are: this style reminds me of something you would find in a child's storybook. It is very clean and easy to understand what's in each image. I really like your color choices because they help make the objects easy to see. Overall, I think you have a wonderful style.

    Such kind words! Thanks

I kind of digging manual coloring right now and off course  Clip Paint Studio. I think its awesome for illustration purposes and I saw many excellent DAZ/Poser renders including yours get treatment in there  ,

I wanna ask to you about the simple logic behind workflow using CLIP Paint Studio for DAZ/Poser renders  since I never find step by step tutorial focused in these task

Im interesting to know how you utilizing Clip Paint Studio . For Shading corrections ? Overlay better line art or  just coloring everthing from scratch in there ?

As we know , unless we`re using simple 3d object  or have a time to  digging complex Blender`s material /normal vector editing - Freestyle , line art output always the weakest area for NPR

Doing manual line art over render still problems for me, because shaky hand and chronic injuries (due bad posture`s when playing guitars and instruments in last 20 years )

Pen tool in AFFINITY Designer ( which easy to use and having features to adjust width profile later on ) maybe the best solution for me if I wanna to overlay better line art , but I know that will be takes too much times than hand drawing .

So I wanna know how you use clip paint studio for your renders

    Thanks for the kind words.

Since I use Poser Pro 11, I create at least two line-art renders and then combine them in Clip Studio Paint:

    1. BASE has small, tight shadows.
    2. Overlay has larger shadowy areas. In CSP, I place this layer on top of the base and I set the layer blending mode to "multiply." I then use this layer as a guide for shading and coloring.

I'm kind of tied up right now, but I'll come back and try to give more details when I have some time. But in the meantime, I do have some old tutorials online that might assist you.

The tutorial starts on this page: http://mikemitchellonline.blogspot.com/2017/09/noir-style-tutorial-pt-21-contents.html
Specific focus on the layering, clean-up process: https://mikemitchellonline.blogspot.com/2017/08/noir-style-tutorial-pt-14-step-9-image.html

Wow, juvesatriani. You are getting better and better with your art.

Such a nice colors and overall composition.

Wish, I could have any skills in the postwork.

I have tried many times to postwork my renders and ask the others, what they think, and I always failed, so far.

    Thanks @artini

Do you familiar with Photoshop Action ? Im just creating simple toon action .. You can download in here . its work for Adobe PS CS 6 or newer version

EDIT NEWER AND  EASIER TO USE VERSION - 8 MARCH 2021

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wod-APwLpczzpickQQquPbsxrMUcNbq1/view?usp=sharing

You can use it as base before adding some glare fx - Better line art overlay or final color adjustment .

its not fully automatic because every images need different parameter (although using same filter or steps)  but I`ve already split those steps so its easy to use .

I`m also include advanced version which contain combined version of  those small steps , but use it after you`re understand what exactly every small steps doing

You need to install free filter called GREYCstoration to make it work . You can find link in readme /guide file

I hope thats useful and feel free to ask if you need help with the action

    Thanks again, juvesatriani.

I am familiar with Photoshop Actions and actually has purchased quite a lot of them.

I have only Adobe PS CS 4 at the moment.

Would like to explore more Affinity Photo and Designer, though.

Even better, if I can achieve similar effects in Unity or Blender.

I just need to know, what layers and what changes one need to do with renders.

Unity has quite a lot different postprocessing filters, as well.

Yeah Blender + DAZ contents for NPR will be amazing . Check or googling lighting Boy shader ver 2.0  or Manga shader by Paul  if you want to work in Blender , although I`m still struggle with it . But its work wonder in some simple models

Here my another unfinished attempt to produce direct render from DAZ and PW Toon with multiple spot lights ( specular only) to adding some color gradient in final render ( in hair - cloth and face)

No postwork at all except  BG and text . Its not percet but yeaaaahhhh...;)

I added some speed lines to it. Any thoughts? Better, worse, doesn't matter?

I like it!  The expressions are well done and the lines are super crisp!  I especially like the angle, though... it lends to a sense of motion.  I have no preferences on the lines, I like it both with and without... It's taken a long time but I'm learning that stuff like that is usually dealers choice, and that it's always best when the dealer just goes with his gut :)

Yup. The editor prefers it with the speed lines, so that's what's going to print. And I got a repreive – the editor is waiting for a cover to come in, so I have more time to create a second scene based on the climax of the story.

A little late but while I like the speed lines, I think their angle is "off" -- I think they should be parallel to the lines of the car, say, rotated a few degrees counter-clockwise.

Now that I look at it again, I think you're right. They off just a bit. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I still have no time to make experiments with NPR.

My daily job is very demanding and I only have some spare time at night.

    @Artini

PHOTO - REALISTIIC RENDER + PHOTOSHOP NPR Workflow

    THE EASY WAY
Download and use my JS Toonkit Helper in here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Wod-APwLpczzpickQQquPbsxrMUcNbq1/view?usp=sharing
FREE Plugin GREYsctoration in here https://ccm.net/download/download-666-greycstoration

After finished dowloading those files . Extract and copy those file in proper locations . Check the guides.
You should ready to go since I`ve already included short instructions how and what you need to adjust  in all action stages
Take your time to read it . And have fun !!

    THE MANUAL WAY
Sometimes you already have workflow to produce Painted/Toon like images from photo ( or realistic render) and wanna see if there are another tricks you can use to enhance yours

In theory you can produce some steps in another graphic editor which have similliar functions . But last time I`ve tested in AFFINITY PHOTO and KRITA they act differently Especially in step which using SHADOW and HIGHLIGHT ADJUSTMENT

    So here the breakdown

STAGE 1  SMOOTH AND DENOISING to make it look like painting
Note : All smoothing or painting Filter tend to remove details and edge clarity  or deform important parts like Eyes - Nose - Mouth- FIngers and sometimes in cloth areas. You can easily avoid it using combo  trick : High pass filter and  masking .  That`s why I`m prefer using GreySctoration Filter which offer better control

    Here my steps :
Before running the smooth/painting filter , Double Click to rename your image layer as BASE

    1. Duplicate the BASE layer -  RENAME IT AS  DETAIL set the layer blending to linear light and run Filter>Other>High pass filter , Set until you  barely see the edges . KEEP This layer in top
    2. Duplicate  again your BASE Layer ,  RENAME it as Painted , now  start running your smooth /denoising or paint oil filter . Crank the value until you see smooth or painted look like in hair area or clothing`s fold
    3. Then Rotate image 90 Degree CW - Applying again the same filter and same setting ( CTL F in photoshop) . Do this several times until your images rotation back to zero
    4. Your image should look like a painted now . If you still dont see painted look , try runing again those sequences  . If already done go to next step
    5. You should now having three layers.  DETAIL - PAINTED and BASE . Select Painted layer . Add Mask  . Change tool to Brush set color to black with low opacity and small size
    6. Make sure  you Selecting Layer mask ( white area beside Painted Layer) , Slowly brush areas which you think getting too much smooth or painting FX
    7. In most case it would be Eyes - Nose tip - Mouth - Ears and FInger for figure/person . IF Object or props with hard edges, brushing in every corner or sharp tangent
    8. Merge down if you finished . Now you should  have only two layer. DETAIL and BASE Layer .
    9. Optional  - Create history state so you can go back in this stage latter

    STAGE 2 CREATING IMPERFECT SURFACE
Notes : There are plenty filter you can use . But  I like using Smart FIlter and Surface blur to get job done .
The goal is imitating  random hard edge brush feel like we`ve seen a lot in painted or comic images

    1. Select your BASE Layer and run Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen .  Adjust the value until you see the hard edges in deep area like Nose - Eye lids and bottom lips . If props just focus in outer edges
    2. Avoid and slide down your values if you see artifact or ghosting/smearing FX in image . Make sure in remove option choose  Remove  Gaussian Blur .Tick more accurate
    3. After finished with SHARPEN process . Duplicate the BASE LAYER and RENAME IT as Surface Blur
    4. Select SURFACE BLUR Layer and go to Filter>Blur>Surface Blur . You can Crank until you see smearing FX in all area . Click OK/Apply
    5. Select processed SURFACE BLUR layer . Set Blending Mode to Soft Light or Hard Light . Set layer opacity around 40 -60% .
    6. You can also try another blend mode like multiply if your BASE images have lighter skin tone or bright scene
    7. MERGE DOWN . Now You`re back having only TWO Layers . DETAIL and BASE .
    8. Optional  - Create history state so you can go back in this stage latter

STAGE 3 REMAP MIDTONE  - SHADING AND COLORS
I`m not sure I can explaining this one , but my simple brain deducing that human`s eye - camera or render engine presenting volume - shadow and AO differently with what most painter or comic colorist trying to duplicate .  Thats maybe the reason why no matter how good the artist doing shading pass ,we can ID the output as painting image not a photo . At least in most cases .

First step in this stage is using Image Adjustment > Shadow Highlight to remap mid tone and shifting the volume and shadow to make lighter contrast and unrealistic . The second step is remap color to limited range tone just like  we`ve seen a lot in comic or painted images . EX : Remap all dark area/shadow to Blue or Purple - Shifting most bright area to Yellow or green tonal range

     Here the breakdown steps

    1. Select Base LAYER and go to IMAGE ADJUSTMENT>SHADOW AND HiGHLIGHT . Tick and Open advanced option so you can see/ get all controls
    2. Ignore other control first and focus to midtone contrast and color correction . Slide Midtone contrast to left and boost color correction to right until images look lighter and flat
    3. Then go to Shadow control . Slide the value to the left and start play Amount and Radius value . Your Goal is to make shadow look not realistic but avoid the washed out FX
    4. Repeat the same process with Highlight part . Try different setting until you see like airbrush FX .
    5. Click Ok to apply it  and with BASE LAYER still selected , go to layer adjustment and pick Color Balance and Color Lookup . So you have DETAIL - CL - CB and your BASE LAYER
    6. Select COLOR LOOKUP and choose 3 Strip or Soft Warming  3D LUT profile as start . You can adjust later . Set this layer opacity to 50%
    7. Now select COLOR BALANCE and open it (click the icon part ) .  Adjust the  Shadows first. Shift your dark tone to blueish or purple and after that go to highlight and shift tone to more yellow or green
    8. Then you can choose and adjust the midtone , until you can find perfect spot
    9. Readjust and balance everthing including change COLOR LOOKUP profile and play with blending or layer opacity . Re tune the COLOR BALANCE
    10. Zoom in and check DETAIL LAYER . Try reduce opacity if FX too strong . After that Flatten All layer

    STAGES 4 SMUDGE TRANSITION
Depending of your style sometimes you want to have smooth transition between dark area or light area  , especially in face or some cloth area and hair
Using Smduge tool in most case works fine but  I hate the lag fx which often happen when blending in big surface /area . So I`m using another trick

    Here my steps

    1. Select FLATTEN layer ( in most case that wil be renamed as Background by Photoshop)
    2. Go to  SELECT > COLOR RANGE
    3. With  EYEDROP TOOL , click and  sampling some area  in your image which have hard transition  .
    4. You can add more colors using clicking icon with "+" symbol
    5. Control how big and small area you want to blend with FUZZINESS slider
    6. Click OK to exit and  creating  the selection area
    7. Go to FILTER>SURFACE BLUR and set both value until most transition area blending better
    8. Click OK to exit

    STAGE 5 GENERATING OUTLINE
This step really tricky ones . DAZ STUDIO actually offer OUTLINE RENDER script when using 3DELIGHT , but you need to setup manually several things
I`ll be touching that workflow in another tutorial . Right now I`ll be explaning how to generate outline using photoshop . Its not perfect but you can delete it if think that sucks

    1. Duplicate the FLATTEN LAYER ( or BACKGROUND ) . Go to IMAGE> ADJUSTMENT > DESATURATE
    2. Then Go again in IMAGE>ADJUSTMENT>BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST
    3. Tick LEGACY option . And drag Brightness slider until around 80- 90 . Then slide contrast value until you see BW pencil or lighter shading fx
    4. You can set as lighter as possible as long  several important edges not lost in white area . Check nose area- eyes  and detail in cloth or some hard egdes
    5. Click OK then go to FILTER >FILTER GALLERY>SKETCH>PHOTOCOPY
    6. You should see some outline. Play with some setting . Back down both value if you see too much noise . CLIK OK to exit
    7. Change OUTLINE layer blending to MULTIPLY OR LINEAR BURN
    8. Erase some part using MASK technique
    9. FLATTEN all layer and DONE

    OPTIONAL STEPS

    • Give final color adjustment using stack of CURVES-COLOR BALANCE AND ANOTHER COLOR LOOK 3D LUT Profile
    • Add Glare - Glows in some area . You can use circle gradient or just find OVERLAY FX in internet
    • Try use FILTER>SHARPEN>UNSHARP MASK to enhance the edges

You can get these PW Toon Preset in here . I`ll be posting in freebie forum after having "proper" promo images and better Readme file . But I want to share in this thread first, because you`re all the best !!!

JS Smooth toon Presets for DAZ Studio and PW TOON

This freebie need DAZ Studio instaled in your machine and PWToon Shader from DAZ Store to make it work

Each Folder contain several preset which organized to make it easy to use
These presets only work for 3Delight so change your render engine first
You can go to Render Setting and look at Engine option and Change to 3Delight

I recommend to load JS Starter Light from !! SCENE SETUP folder and also Smooth Toon Render Preset before loading figures or props

When first loaded , You`ll see that you have Starter Light Group set in your scene . Open it and toogle on off each light for get different render style

The render Preset set Shading rate to 5, which in theory makes your render faster . But if your render really need outline or geoshell line you should manually resetting back shading rate value to 1 or smaller values

One thing to note : All presets have No ( Zero- Non active) outline or internal line .

Because I dont like it but feel free to make it active

    The PRESETS

FULL MAT Presets contain One Click Smooth toon for Genesis 3 - Genesis 8 and G 8.1
For another Gneration Figures try to use Skin Shader Presets which included in BASE SHADER ONLY folder

In BASE SHADER folder also contain presets for Cloth and hair
You can use each shader presets for another figure or objects if you want .
Make sure you select your object in Scene Explorer and the right surface first, before applying those presets

If you want to retaining all textures use CTRL+ CLICK instead

FULL MAT + Textures Presets is solution if you already have some texture set from DAZ Store or another sites
All named with original character/figure where they came from . So check if you already those set or not
Most presets already optimized and tested to get better results but feel free to tweak and change to suit your style

All MODEL LINKS you`ll need it to use those presets will be include in MODEL INFO text .
Right now it only have few presets . But I`ll be adding more in next update

STARTER FIGURE folder contain each Genesis Generation Figure ( except G2 families) with basic Smooth Toon Shading applied
Those presets for peoples who want to tweak and assign their favorite Texture manually
G8 or G8.1 figures presets not loaded with Eyelash or Brow . You need adding manually and apply toon shader itself

    Thanks and Enjoy

Most presets already optimized and tested to get better results but feel free to tweak and change to suit your style

Thanks for great presets! You helped me with Rim multyplier greatly!
I tried your PWToon presets with AOA lights. It appears slower, than with your lights, but I like the result more.

    PW Toon And Photoshop

Here`s another one, I`ll be posting mini tutorial how to get those styles (if someone interest)  after figuring out how to make easy to understand/follow since English not my first language

I`l also including some PW Toon Presets for creating Flat - Multiple Shadow and 3d delight DAZ shader to get  Quick AO pass.

All outline produced used DAZ outline script which included in every DAZ studio version

Oh please do post your tutorials and presets!

I am currently in the process of writing a tutorial about Multipass for NPR.

Maybe tomorrow night ( GMT +7) I'll post it, after completing some test renders and recreating presets that are easy for everyone to use, as well as actions that will be useful when doing post processing in Adobe Photoshop.

I will also test UE2 for alternatives to AoA Light in terms of AO Pass.  In theory, UE2 is more accurate, but for NPR purposes, accuracy may not be what we need.

But at least for those who doesnt AOA Ambient Light still possible to duplicate this technique.

I`m also considering to utilize IRAY`s clay render as AO pass alternative .

I worked a lot with UE2. It is not the best thing for NPR. I got UberSoftLight and it is much better than UE2, but still not as good, as AOA lights. What shader do you use for transparent stuff and hair? PWtoon is not the best choice for it. I use Ubersurface with disabled occlusion. It saves render time dramatically and stil has good NPR look.

Here is what I have done with your presets and AOA light (plus my humble personal tuning). You have done excellent work. Thank you once more.

Sorry, censor bars are not an improvement over nudity - Acceptable Ways of Handling Nudity  Please give the character clothes or, if you are showing shape rather than materials, use a screen shot in Smooth Shaded mode.

But my goal was to show bare skin. Will it be ok, if I add some bra?

Yes, that or a bikini would be fine

Also a reminder that if you just don't have the scratch for PWToon right now, D|S actually comes with a fairly versitile Toon shader set. It even renders faster than PWToon. Here's one render without and then with the outlines turned on.
