@ALLIEKATBLUE Try different translucency colors and SSS Tints. This set supports 10 of the Daz Original Official 8 characters and has their corresponding presets to go with it (which of course can be used on other characters but wasn't exactly designed for them - there is no "one size fits all" unfortunately). I did include quite a few adjustment presets to help accommodate different skin tones and skin maps, but some farther tweaking might be needed for different skins. Also rendering seems to be quite a bit like photography in real life, in that lighting and render settings can make a big difference in how a person/character looks. Just like with setting up a photo shoot in real life, applying the right lighting and render setting helps a lot. :) Even something like changing up the HDR or even rotating the HDR can bring a better look to skin.

@ALLIEKATBLUE I'm cooking up some "formulas" right now for some darker skin settings - but for now until I can get them rendered and posted I recommend for darker skintones to move the "SSS Tint" from the blue range to the yellow/orange range. :)

I apologise if this has already been answered, but do I need to own the relevant characters if I want to use use the 'maps' settings? I've been testing Altern8  this evening and I'm struggling a little (mainly becasue I don't understand skin settings). Though I'm prepared to put the time in to learn it properly. For example, I have Aiko 8 and using the maps setting works fine, but I don't own Charlotte 8 and Daz tells me that there are files missing (textures). I don't have many of the main Daz characters so this may limit me a little.

Off to bed now (it's gone midnight here) but I'll pop back in tomorrow.

To use the maps, you have to own the figure.

Ah!  Thank you @ChadCrypto. I didn't realise that.

There are lots of No Map options if you don't own the relevant figures, so it is still very usable even if you don't own any of them.

If you own the character the "Maps" settings will load the mats. If you don't own the character use the "No Maps" settings (the green icons). :) The "No Maps" settings will load just the settings and the included Altern8 maps but not the character maps. So they can be used on other characters as well. :)

Yes, exactly. Thank you, PhilW. :) I've also tried to include quite a few adjustment settings so that the presets can be adjusted to accommodate other characters and skin varieties a bit more.

Quick one before bed. This is a revisited render. I always thought Stephanie 8's skin was too orange in it.

Defaults: Stephanie 8 and DAZ Dragon 3 with default shaders:

Altern8: Here she is with Edward 8 No Maps presets. I like the definition, skin shine and color here. She looks tan without looking orange (self tanner! LOL) For the heck of it, I used Darius 8 A Gen shader on DAZ Dragon 3's skin. Yes, you can use gen shaders on animals and creatures of all kinds! I didn't reshade the claws or horns, which still look too plastic here. I like how the skin came out.

    Notes:

    • No postwork on either image.
    • Same render settings and lighting
    • These images are huge. Click and zoom in for much more detail.
    • You can see the differences better if you open each image in a separate tab and flip between them.

That's a lovely picture and I can definitely see the improvement in the dragon, but I have to laugh at the idea that she is tan in either image. Still, it's a good demo of the product!

Thank you. I’l keep on experimenting with the no maps options :-)

lol Sweet! Thank you for purchasing Altern8 - that's awesome! I really appreciate it!

For warming up the skin - try adjusting the SSS Tint. :) You can get a wide variety of looks by adjusting the SSS Tint color. :)

@Llynara - Wow, epic dragonage! heheh Very cool!

For the Gen shaders, you'll have to be careful with the Darius ones. lol They load one of Darius' normal maps (to help his gens blend better with his torso - since, for some reason, none of the gens come with normal maps even though the rest of the character does). For the other characters that didn't seem to be an issue, but for Darius you could definitely tell there was not a normal map there, so I had to improvise and do a little MacGyvering. lol So if you use the Darius Gen maps on anything other than his Gens you'll probably want to replace the Normal Map that loads with his gen shaders, with the normal maps of what ever character or creature you're using it on. :)

    Thanks again

You're welcome - sorry I couldn't have provided more presets for more darker skin (this set supports 10 of the "official 8" characters, but sadly only two are black. Daz needs to put out more dark-skinned characters!). It looks like for darker skinned characters what can give the best looks is changing the SSS Tint Colors. Definitely don't be afraid to experiment with it. :)

The first image is the character "out of the box" with her default skin settings:

And here she is with "Aiko 8 A- No Maps" setting, "Duel Lobe Specular Reflectivity" moved to .50, and the SSS Tint set to a pale yellow:

Here's a different character. I used the "Aiko 8 B - No Maps" setting, "Duel Lobe Specular Reflectivity" moved to .50, and SSS Tint moved to here:

Both renders are using the "HDR A" and "Render Settings B".

So yeah, don't be shy about tweaking the SSS Tint colors because that can really change the look, imo. :)

Ooh, I really love those tweaks, Diva. Is that Zari for G3F in the last pic? She's gorgeous!

    Yeah, it's Zari. :D

Thank you, Llynara! And I agree - she's a beautiful character! :) Silver and DE did a great job on her!

Oh gosh! How did I miss this question!? Sorry, Jakiblue! You should be able to install it whichever is your prefered way. There aren't any scripts or anything to trip things up. :) Sorry for the late response!

The renders you all are posting are great and the response to this product has been amazing! Wow! Thank you all for your feedback and for the excitement you've been sharing over Altern8! I'm honored that so many of you guys have chosen to give my products a chance!

I've been hearing the feedback and I'm working on adding a few more SSS Tint colors to help give more warmer skin tones - as well as to help support a wider variety of skins.

I'm working on testing the colors with the included settings and then I'll be working on adding the tip files and icons for the new settings - so it might take a bit. But once I get them set up I'll send them off to Daz and ask them to update the product. I really appreciate everyone's feedback and hope that the added colors and settings will provide a wider range of support for a wider variety of skin. :)

Thanks again for all the great feedback and support! You guys are awesome - I'm floored by the support you guys have given! heart

Please don't forget to count me among the supporters!

That being said, I want to report an issue. I don't have a lot of characters, mostly because I am not a full time 3D artist; I use DAZ to compose scenes that later on I paint with oils. I tested Altern8 with Mousso's Delaney and ESS Aarna (from "the other site"). All good.

But there's this one character from this site I had an issue with. Dear @Divamakeup, perhaps you have RareStone's Pei? When I attempted to render her with Altern8, I got what I show in this render. I wonder what happened, whether it's a problem with the character or with my system. So far the other characters I have tested her with have yielded good results. Thank you in advance!

hahah I definitely won't forget to count you! :)

It looks like the shader has been applied to only the torso? Did you, by chance, use one of the gen shaders with the torso selected instead of using one of the presets?

  • Bought on day one, as a newbie to Daz it's great to be able to tweak skins. Only issue I can say is some guide/readme or turtorial would help in understanding the icons (one line of text isn't enough in most cases).

Blame Llynara for me picking this up!  OK blame the daz sale prerequisite requirements, but either way I'm now a proud owner of Altern8!!!

I'm working on a celeb lookalike now (which I'll probably share when I'm done if I'm happy with it), and decided this would be a fun opportunity to test out Altern8.  I don't have the character fully dialed in yet, but I have a question about the red nose issue...

The pics to the left and right are reference images, placed on plane primitives to help me figure things out.  Those have nothing to do with Altern8...

I haven't tried fine tuning the dials yet, but I worked my way down the list of settings in the Altern8 product folder, and ended up here.  Edward 8 'A', no maps.  Ignore the demon eyes (haven't replaced those yet).

I'm pretty happy with how the face looks so far skin texture wise, although I'll probably lighten things a bit more... Except for the redness in the nose, that's an issue.

Is there an easy way to dial down the redness in just the nose?
