In a nutshell, look at your Skin settings. Under Volume, there's one called "Transmitted Measurement Distance." Try lowering that to .25 or even lower, and see how it looks
Finally had a chance to try this out and wow! I'm loving it so far! Unfortunately my first render with it is NSFW and can't be posted here lol. If you are interested in it, its in my Deviant Art gallery. I will be using this quite a bit!

Is there any way to discover which options were used for a character? I've been experimenting and now have a dozen or so skins that I really like but - silly me - I don't remember what settings I used.

You could always save a new Material preset so that you can load the whole setup with one click.

same here
i would like to see somehow which options are on and which not
even if you use new skinmaps some options are still on

I posted this in the thread on The Commons but I thought I'd post it here as well in case people are following this thread and not the one in The Commons.
I've been hearing you guys' feedback and as stated here and here, I'll be updating the product with some additional presets. :)
Some of the skins are reacting to some of the presets with a "red-nose" effect, so there are presets to fix that (thank you Llynara for the great suggestion!).
There have been some asking for warmer tones as well as more settings for darker skins. There are now 10 new SSS Tint colors, and 3 new Translucency colors that will work well with both warming skin tones and helping to enhance dark skins. Additionally, there will be 2 more skin shine settings - one for those who want nearly no shine, and one to turn shine off all together.
Here are some renders with some of the new settings.
Tisha with her default settings:
Tisha with:
"Monique - No Maps"
SSS Tint H
Translucency D 45
Transmitted Measurement Distance .07
Taia with her default settings:
Taia with:
Lucas 8 B - No Maps
SSS Tint J
Transmitted Measurement Distance .25
Skin Shine Low
Taia with:
Olympia 8 A - No Maps
SSS Tint H
Transmitted Measurement Distance .12
Thank you, guys, for your feedback! The product will be updated with the new settings soon. :)

Unfortunitely, no. But as PhilW said you can always save it as a Material Preset once you get the settings to your liking. :)
I posted these on the other Altern8 thread, but thought they should be here as well. The Karyssa No Maps settings, with some tweaks, works very well on both of them. I've listed the "recipes" below and will do a render with them both together soon. Remember that once you get the look you want, you can save as a material preset and always have them to use whenever you like. (I believe G8F's base skin is actually Karen 7's skin and G8M's base is Michael 7.)
As always, click and zoom for way more detail (I render big!) No postwork on any of the images, and you can find more images here. Light set used: Fabiana's Zen Moods HDRI Lighting (Rendo). G8M didn't want to sit on the floor, so he's floating a bit. Men! LOL
Altern8 on G8F:

Toenails- copy from legs, lower Translucency Weight to .35 to get rid of slight pink on ends of toe nails (they are a bit bright though, I may have to tweak them some more.)

I'm playing with Altern8 on the darker skins and trying out the new tint presets Diva is working on. Here is the gorgeous Imani, one of my favorite characters for G3 and G8. She was released at Rendo before G8 came out and Cynderblue kindly put out an update for her. I did not want to lighten her skin, just make it a little richer. I tend to use peach, pink and gold lighting on the darker skins, it brings out that richness more. Blues and greens seem to have the opposite effect.
Notes:
When you change the translucency color of this character, the arm textures no longer match the torso. I've never seen that before, but darkening the translucency covers that issue again (indicated below.)
She was originally a G3, so you have to apply her G8 shape to base G8F, then apply the G3 skin.
When using the G8F version, don't forget to load the G8F eyelashes. (I had forgotten about this till after these renders.) You could use Monique's eyelashes or any of the other G8 characters and she should look fine.
As usual, click and zoom in for a lot more detail.
Imani G8F Defaults:
I do not have a super strong light on her. For some reason, her eyes are super reflective.
Altern8 on Imani
Recipe:
Aiko 8 No Maps B (she will be lighter and you'll see an seam, but we'll fix it later.)
Altern8 Eye Socket Maps
Sclera .25
Translucency Weight E (.55) (If you want her darker, use a higher one)
Skin Shine B (Medium)
Skin Shine Lips D (Ultra High)
Alternate SSS Tint F (A also looks good. You can really play with this.)
Translucency Color E
Reapply the gold metallic eye shadow from the G3F Imani materials folder
Reapply lipstick from G3F Imani materials folder
Fix Arm Seam and Red Tint:
We are using Translucency Color E here, but need to darken it to fix the seam issue and correct any skin tone issues (though I like this one here, I also like how dark she is and really don't want to change that.)
So go into the Surfaces Tab, select Skin so that all skin parts are highlighted and look for Translucency Color. Click on that, then pull the white arrow on the right hand side of the color box downward until you like the results in the Iray Preview window. As soon as you darken the color, the seam starts to disappear. Here's what I ended up with:
I think you can lower the eye reflection by playing with the eye moisture settings if you want to.
Please don't forget to count me among the supporters!
That being said, I want to report an issue. I don't have a lot of characters, mostly because I am not a full time 3D artist; I use DAZ to compose scenes that later on I paint with oils. I tested Altern8 with Mousso's Delaney and ESS Aarna (from "the other site"). All good.
But there's this one character from this site I had an issue with. Dear @Divamakeup, perhaps you have RareStone's Pei? When I attempted to render her with Altern8, I got what I show in this render. I wonder what happened, whether it's a problem with the character or with my system. So far the other characters I have tested her with have yielded good results. Thank you in advance!
I'm seeing this problem as well with Pei, I tried several presets and all give the same problem.
Looks like the issue is the same as above with Imani- changing the translucency color (with a preset) reveals seams between the torso and the limbs. I am not sure why. None of the other characters I've tested (and I've tested quite a few now) have had this issue. Something about these two skins are different, but I don't know what.
Here's Pei with her defaults:
I'm actually seeing a slight seam even on the defaults. I did this one before any other shaders were applied. Maybe there's an update I didn't apply.
Here she is with Altern8:
Recipe:
Karyssa 8 No Maps
Altern8 Eye Socket
Sclera .25
SSS Skin Tint A
Transmitted Measurement Distance .25
Once again, darkening the translucency color seems to fix it.
She could be tweaked some more, but here she is with the darkened translucency color and no seams:

You know, sometimes I need to think before I post ;) I went for a walk after posting that question and the answer - your answer - came to me as soon as I started giving it some thought. But thank you - nice to be able to get questions answered, no matter how basic the question.

Thanks but credit to you for providing the means - even the lighting is all yours. As for Mat presets - see above. One of those "Doh" moments for me, I'm afraid.

What causes the white face? I am not selecting theDiffuse Eyebrows & Makeup settings but I get a white face in about 60% of my renders. Easy to cure it by switching the Diffuse Overlay off but I was wondering why it happens.
I usually get it in general if I use the Olympia 8 preset. I also get it if the character used that diffusion makeup- all the new G8 gals do. Easily fixed with the preset.
Awan HD for Michael 7
Here is another character I'm testing with Diva's new presets. This is Awan HD for M7 by Raiya. Awesome character and skin already. Didn't think it would hurt to try him with Altern8. As usual, no postwork, Fabiana light set, bigger pics when you click. There some poke through on the pants, even though there was none in the Iray preview and the smoothing was on. Very weird.

This made him just a little darker. That can easily be tweaked to taste with Translucency Strength.
Note: Interesting-he looked good in every tint I threw on him and different translucencies, even different character shader presets. Very well done character with amazing skin.

Some of the characters use Diffuse Overlays for makeup and/or eyebrows. Their presets apply the same Diffuse Overlay settings. So if you use their settings on another character that doesn't use Diffuse Overlay for makeup or eyebrows just turn it off with the included preset. :)

Old Chap from Kayleyss after tinkering with the Altern8 options.
LOL, it's my fault! And your custom character is looking good. I just posted on the other thread about the red nose here (look at the next few posts after it too): https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3551821/#Comment_3551821
