The people who engineer LUX Render are working on a version which will also work with a video card, in a similar manner to Octane, and so giving tremendous speed in rendering.
However from what I know this is not yet ready for release.
And it will be free of course.
Hellboy, where exactly is this? How do I do it? (And thanks for the tip) I don't recall seeing the option, but then again, I wasnt exactly looking!
Novica, I haven't actually played with this yet, but I did find out where the option is:
Go into Render Settings (you need to be in Advanced mode), then click on the drop-down list "Render Engine" - just under 3Delight is "Scripted 3Delight", so pick that. Underneath a big grey box will then appear saying "Select a Render Script..." - click on the down-arrrow there and you get 3 options (at least I do), the second of which is "Point-Based Occlusion". You then get a whole bunch of options under various headings - I haven't a clue what they all do yet, but at least this is how to get into it :)
Sorry I'd add screenshots (often better than words) but I don't have DS installed on this machine.
With luck Hellboy will call in here soon and maybe give more info on what settings give his nice results...
The trouble with Octane is that unless you take out a second mortgage to pay for it and the extra cost of having a very decent video card since the program heavily relies on how much memory your video card has puts it out of the reach of most people.. Not everyone has $479 USD to splash out on a beta plugin which the Octane for Daz Studio currently is..
Reality and Luxus on the other hand and a more affordable alternative and when the new version of Reality is released for Studio it will allow for better implementation of Hybrid CPU / GPU rendering and Pure GPU Rendering, which puts it pretty darn close to the speed of Octane without the exorbitant cost of Octane..
I have both Reality and Octane Render for Poser so I made a test with Reality (luxrender) on GPU only rendering and it's not even 10% of the Octane render speed.
Kevin, I am fascinated by what you say about Carrara. With such a good render engine, why did DAZ not use it in DS I wonder....... ? Was it developed by DAZ?
Any comments you might have to help understand this would be appreciated.
Randy
The short-ish answer is that Carrara was not developed by DAZ 3D. Studio existed before DAZ 3D bought Carrara, so I would imagine it would have been difficult and expensive to pull a 180º turn and switch render engines.
The longer answer: Carrara was not developed by DAZ 3D. Raydream Studio and Infini-D were combined by MetaCreations to create Carrara. Through a torturous path, it was reacquired by some former developers that formed a company called Eovia. Eovia developed Carrara through version 5, then sold it to DAZ 3D. Eovia also created Hexagon, which DAZ 3D also bought. This thread by RingoMonfort, PA par-excellence, and long-time Carrara guru compiled the history in this thread:

Having used both renderers (albeit Studio was at version 3 the last time I tried it), I prefer Carrara's renderer. It is fast, efficient and easier for me to set up. I found the default options superior to Studio's defaults. It's not a rip on Studio, just my personal experience. Both are fine pieces of software.
