Mu guess would be your hard drive is going bad. Last time Ihad a desktop system, I started getting symptoms just like yours, and every day the bad sector list got worse - I finally backed it up, bought a new one, reinstalled Windows and everything and the system purred happily along another 2 years before I give it away.

If chkdsk keeps fixing it, that's my bed. HDDs don't last forever, alas. (frown)

i have lapis beads at home. gonna try with the camera. it's pretty much a matte blue, not much reflective.

still trying to figure out why when i saved my scene in poser, it obliterated all my dynamic hair styling. traumatizd.

Yikes! That's not good, that means having to re-do it all! (cry cry cry)

...been there a lot. You get used to it after a while.

Speaking of redos, here's one of the characters who I rebuilt using David5 and Timeless Male Hair for that pesky scene I've been working on over the last several weeks.

    Looks so much better

Not wild about how the coat looks as I'm having layering issues with several components of the Morphing Business Suit. If I make the collision target the shirt so I can narrow the sleeves down, the waistcoat pokes through, If I use the waistcoat as the collision target, the sleeves of the shirt poke through. I wish you could select collision targets by body zones.

What's your Smoothing Iterations/Collision Iterations on the coat?
Also, there may be a "thicker" adj on the coat to loosen it a bit.
Cool render BTW. What the modern Elf is wearing this season?

Complaint: I am actually feeling a bit chilly today! Last night got down to 66F after suffering for 3 days at 97F at night. Well, actually, not a real complaint. I like it cooler. Our poor a/cs are fading away. I get tired of the fans, it's like being stuck on a 1940s propeller airplaine winging over the Atlantic. Whr Whr Whr. My laptop gets so hot from the ambient temps I am reluctant to render when it's so hot. So today I might work on a render for a contest. I don't win, but at least I try.

Hubby bought smoked salmon chunk and Lucky Buddha beer for my lunch. This beer is Chinese, and is wheat based, I think. It is not skunky at all. He likes beer, or rather ale that is the opposite, very dark and very skunky-or is that hops? His cooling bevie of choice for the moment is "Arrogant B****D Ale". My beer comes in a bottle in the shape of Ho-tei, his has a label of a gargoyle. I always prefer to drink from the bottle, so this works, I can rub Ho Tei for luck. Hubby prefers in a glass, but I think the beer warms up and goes flat too fast.

..."skunk beer" isn't because of a lot of hops are used (like in an Indian Pale Ale for example), it's because it was handled and stored incorrectly. The term is called "Light Struck" and it has to do with being exposed to ultraviolet light which alters the characteristic of the hops casing the molecules to be split and bond with sulfur thus creating the "skunky" taste. It often occurs in beer that is kept in brightly lit (often with fluorescent lights which are higher on the UV spectrum than incandescent). Beer in Green or clear bottles is the most susceptible to this but even brews in the traditional brown bottles is not immune.

There are some beers like Pilsners" and some of the better crafted lagers (not the industrial swill made here in the States) which actually are brewed with a slight sulfur character which is created by particular strains of Lager Yeast rather than the hops. This actually gives the beer it's unique "crisp" character.

Your husband using a glass is actually the proper way to enjoy an ale or beer because it is a less "concentrated" experience than drinking form a bottle (or, urgh, can). Also, the type of glass used has a bit of bearing on the quality of the taste and is not just for show. For example, the classic tapered "Pilsner" styled glass enhances the "volatiles" (basically reducing the concentration effect) when the beer is poured into it and is thus very appropriate for that style of brewing as well as some lagers. Belgian brews are best served in a wide stemmed glass (such as as Goblet, Tulip, or oversize wineglass) which again promotes the Volatiles while allowing the "bouquet" to become part of the experience (many of the finest Belgian ales are brewed with fruit as well).

Oh, and never never drink a traditional Belgian ale straight from the bottle unless you want an unpleasant experience afterwards as they often have a bit of yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottle. This keeps the ale "live" when in the bottle.

...I've tried to adjust the Collision iterations but the poke through just got worse. Haven't tried adjusting the smoothing yet. I already increased the "thickness" a bit but don't want to make him end up looking like "Guido the elf".

Also spent a lot of time with the cuffs as they seem to "flare out" even when using a negative adjustment. Ended up twisting the sleeve on the arm with the glasses in the hand to hide it.

This is when I wish we had "real" dynamics.

Yeah he has to look stylin' as well as imposing for the scene he is going into. He's a real "baddie" as elves of the 6th Age go, who is also a member of the Council of Princes in the Tir. The name of the pic will say it all [no spoilers for now]

Try smoothing then. A smoothing setting seems to work better with a collision at about half as much. Try 10/5 smoothing/collision and see if it helps. Sometimes works, sometimes not, depending on the item of clothing. Some work well up to 20/10. I always end up experimenting a lot with uncooperative clothing. : )

Thanks! I'm not happy with the shadows and feel of depth, I think I need DOF enabled and to play with lighting, it looks too blown out to me.

    I know.. I'm a perfectionist. but aren't we all?

Thanks! It's stil missing a dramatic sense of depth.. the lighting is too even, it needs to be a dark/stormy feel without obscuring the action. Probably take DOF and a fog cam.. sigh. So much to learn.

No emails from the boss so I'm thinking no freaking emergencies to deal with, I can chill today and just... slack! (giant grin)

Beer later.. not as much as yesterday... uurrppp!

an ethnic Olaf? is he eskimo?

    Beer! wantz too.

applied the 6/30 coupie to the Wisteria Pool. been wanting it for a while. textures are pretty, hoping nice size tiling jpgs, would make some elegance for an empeoror's palace.

need some lapiz lazuli shader for architectural feature decor.

I don't know if I'm going to ethnize (is that even a word?) Olaf, but I want flexibility for my other renders.. and it was on sale, so what the heck!

If you were here I'd share my beer, I have plenty left! (grin)

I don't know if Gemologica has lapis, DS is rendering so I can't check right now.. it sure has everything else..

I was picturing Olaf like this, only not as smart. : )

my virtual bf! dressed. giving him the benefit of the doubt, but maybe he's carrying an extra sock ?

    ...Friday complaint.

...well based on "official word", looks like if one doesn't use the DIM they are out of luck knowing when there are updates of content. This is basically forcing use of the utility on customers if they want to keep their runtimes current, something I feared might occur as things kept changing over the last few months. It was basically said that Daz is "not going through 16,000 products" (most of which used to have update version numbers in the installers) to do this, that we have to use the software provided.

The DIM doesn't work with my setup. I'm done struggling trying to make it work, heck even to get it to remember my correct username. I uninstalled it and tossed the installer in the recycle bin.

...not very happy right now considering the investment I have in this.

Umm.. KK until DIM we had NO info about UPDATES at all from the new site. You HAD to check your products list yourself and KNOW what version number you installed last. I myself think any tool that AUTO offers the info is better than none. And before I get called a DAZ3D Fan boi let me say this, I AM NOT A FAN OF ANY INSTALL MANAGER FROM ANY SITE!! I prefer to HAND install content as much as possible, then I know I did it and it was done right. I and many others are Baffled by the DIM not accepting your USER Name and USER Address that you log on the Store with. But I have said in the past and say again it again now, as an ex-programmer it is dang near impossible to write one program that will work 100% on all possible PC configurations. The idea that every program will work for every person on every PC with every type of AV installed, every type of possible background task active, any and all drivers for each device sold, out of date and updated drivers included, is not possible. Something will be missed, it just can not be done. I'm sorry your one of the people in the it does not work group, believe me I wish you were not in that group.

...there is (was) a resource however in a thread that Jay NOLA put up last year which though the help of community members (including myself) kept people informed about content updates. It is still there, but with the change to DIM .zips, there are no longer version numbers attached to content installers so with newly DL'd content (say in the last couple months), it's difficult to tell if I have the updated version or not because there are no numbers to compare anymore. in the past, myself, as well as other "long timers" here, remember getting update notices form Daz via email. Why did that stop?

There have been two updates of the DIM since it's introduction and so far, none of them get my username right. I use my notebook to download with, the same one I sign into the store and the forums with everyday. I have no issues there, I don't have to create a new login every time I sign on, so the DIM shouldn't have an issue with this, yet it does.

I know that the DIM won't be able to handle actually installing to my setup, but when I can't even get it to start up properly, let alone DL anything that can be transferred intact to my workstation (which has no Net link) it becomes rather frustrating. Now it seems it is almost required for doing what we used to be able to do just as well if not better without it.

Without the road map of a good readme,(and considering how Daz has set studio up these days) it is confusing to figure out where things need to go just by looking at the folder structure in the zip as there are files in the Daz/DSON/trx (what have you) installers that apparently go into a Runtime folder, (which on my setup is in my S3A "Poser" Runtime so Poser Pro and Carrara can access it) even though it isn't a .dpc/.pos installer. In the old days, everything went into the Programme Files/Daz/Content/Runtime, none of this Public Documents stuff, none of the My Library stuff. Simple, elegant and straightforward.

It really doesn't need to be this "over-teched".
