my second and final entry for this month's render fun

    E.V.A.

    Mission Objectives

    1. Restore power - “yeah, got it”

    2. Find alternative way to Airlock 42 - “yeah, I’m there”

    3. Make sure you have the medkit - “got it”

    4. Make sure you have the PBX3 fuse for the sonic drill - “sonic what? Oh F**** …”

    5. EVA back to the shuttle to meet with Johnson - "blown up this one”

    6. Travel to the Nexus system - “can I restart the level?”

    *

    software used

    Hexagon for modeling airlock 42

That looks very cool. Have you designed the whole airlock corridor?
Very impressive work and lot of details.

Wow, I wasn't away from here for quite a week and this thread almost doubled in size (and now I've realised that is pretty normal given we're only two weeks in angel). Lots of nice renders in here, can't really comment on them all, little overwhelmed by seeing 70+ new posts! laugh

@seegsons: Hexagon done as well... looks amazing smiley

@Wanderer: I think I prefer this pose with both the guns at the oncoming horde.

    @HighElf: Wow! Really like smiley

@Night678winG: Ok, I find that funny, the looks on their faces are really good smiley

@Novbre: Sadly there's no way to do motion blur in iray in Daz. What I did for my image that Tynkere mentioned was to do to separate renders, one for the bike and the rider, and a second for the background. Loaded up the background in GIMP and used the blur tool on it to, well, give motion blur laugh, and then put the bike on top of that as a second layer. My image had the bike going along a street and almost perpendicular to the camera to make my life easier for sorting the blur out. One gotcha I ran into was that the road had height to it, so when I hid that from the second layer's render the shadow of the bike was suddenly not where it should be as it was now floating in mid-air! Had to lower the bike to the 0 position on the Y-axis even though that put it below the road.

@daybird: Not quite sure what you meant for my picture about a podest under the guy?

I took my render up another notch of craziness and it now loads up 36.5GB of texture memory into my 6GB card.... Looks like it doesn't discount identical textures in that number but the graphics card doesn't have to worry. Re-jigged the lighting as someone suggested and the render time also went down by about half as well! The four figures in the background have only been placed in generic positions so far, and I need to make some limbs be unhidden.

Does anyone know if there's a way to make dForce simulation happen for a single figure only?

@Noswen - Sorry I didnt' see this before. Yeah, yeah, you can do that. when you have dforce modifier on a surface an you like it as is, you just select that item in the scene, go into the parameters tab, under the simulation settings, you can freeze dforce on that item so it isn't affected by further simulations. If you want it to start reacting again, you just change that toggle back. You have to do this for every item you want to interact or not to interact--but by default it just interacts with the dforce simulation. This is one way to stack a pile of laundry. You drop the first item, simulate it, freeze it, drop the next on top of that, freeze it, and so on. Anyway, sorry for being so stupid about the scale on your image. I just didn't get it at first, but that's probably just me.

Does anyone know how to keep lighting from highlighting the ridges on top of a genesis figure's skull? I'm getting terrible geometry artifacts in a render, and I'm not sure how to stop them. I don't have an example I want to share right now, but the light and shadow at the curve of a few skulls highlights the mesh fairly clearly. I don't know if every character has a little of this or not. Just trying to resolve it. Thanks in advance.

ANY feedback, comments or ideas are welcome.  This is still in the concept stage for me, so I'm open to changing or adjusting just about anything.

    ~ Novbre

Correct.  Don't think IRay can do that.  Might look at January of this year tho.  Member named "Noswen" was able to get really good blur via post work I think.  Interesting enough his was a bike scene too!

    @ everyone

Doing it a bit differently from now on since have been very fortunate or just plain lucky.  NAE from here on out.  Will offer tips or suggestions only if post requests. (Don’t want to sound like a smarty-pants know it all.)  ; )

For my own stuff, if have any questions about how I do something or just want to comment-- feel free!  Don't have a horse in the race any more if that makes sense.

    So...

Opinions welcome on hospitaller knight I picked up during a recent sale.  Problem might be how to pose him, add some action & maybe ditch the dead guy.  Poses at store looked more Hollywood theatrics than how they really fought.  (According to documentary on Discovery or History channel I think)  Then again, if you have magic & monsters who cares right?  Still, posing with shield & hilt of sword harder than I thought.

thanks for reading & hope you enjoy

This is a wonderful image.  I love the lighting on the fallen warrior.

About the only thing I can find to critique would be to add a flame to the torch in the stairway.  Even with the sun coming through the window off camera I believe a medieval castle would have the torches lit.

A really compelling image and wonderful perspective.

I really cannot think of anything to suggest to improve the image.

I am not sure I have had that problem.  You are in Iray?  Which generation of Genesis figure are you using?

Well, it happened to me before on, I think it was, G2M. Now I'm rendering an image of Ollie 8 for the freebie contest, and it isn't done rendering, but it's just at the curve of the skull where it transitions in lighting, I can see the ridgelines in the mesh. It makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong--or if that's the price of rendering at high resolutions without using HD morphs. Yes, I'm in Iray.

@Kismet2012: I just edited to add this note now--I've posted a pic of the issue I'm talking about in my art studio thread.

Hey folks, keep up the great work.  I had non-3D stuff take over my schedule for a little while and I come back and the thread has nearly tripled in length.  Great.

I'll see if I can have an update of my butterfly hunter this weekend.  It may take a little while to catch up on what everyone has been doing.

Decided to add a fourth member to the crew, so here's version K.  New guy isn't in a good mood though, due to the simple fact that while the rest of the team can fight at range, he's only able to fight CQC, so he's staying in cover, and trying to help as he can even if it's playing medic.

@Diomede - Good to see you around again.

Shinji - I'm not familiar with shadowrunners enough to know about the culture of these individuals, why the one cannot fight at range, how the role of medic is viewed by these people. But as far as the image is concerned, I think he fits neatly in that spot. I'm wondering though if he is going to have problems from that pool of glowing gunk that he seems to be touching.

Here is my current version, which I'm hoping I'm nearing completion of, in terms of changes. The render is terrible--even using the scene optimizer script, this image took me 5 hours to reach 3.5% completion. I may have to get VERY creative in terms of rendering if I'm ever going to manage a finished quality render.

    is this a compositing shot?

if say, the room itself is a real camera shot, the only thing to render is the zombies and her (from where do I know her... highschool, that's right, my gosh)

you could do the entire thing in Fusion

    edit:

    better idea

    1. render the room only with nothing in it as background layer

    2. render the shelf and the boxes layer 2

    3. render her and the thing she's standing on and the zombies layer 3

    4. render the lamp

    5. composite everything together in Photoshop or Fusion and fake the lighting in

@Wanderer, I know what you mean about not knowing that much about shadowrunners. Most of what I've played is Shadowrun Returns and it's sequels Dragonfall and Hong Kong on my laptop. If I remember right, in those games, if a member of the crew has a med kit they can use it on themself or on a teammate if they're standing next to them. Also if I were involved in something like what's going on in my render, then if someone wasn't able to help with the fighting I'd want them to be helping with keeping the rest of the team in the fight so that everyone can get out alive if possible, but when one runs in the shadows that isn't always the case.

Shinji - Okay, well that makes sense. Thank you for sharing. I knew guys who played the RPG back in the day, but yeah, I really haven't played any of those myself.

Thanks for all of your help with this.  I am really new at this.  I started doing renders in February of this year.  I made some more changes based on your suggestions.  Maybe I should have started with something smaller.

I think you are doing good with this render and the more you work on it to improve it the more you will feel better about this render!!

Keep up the great work Tangled up with Ink !!!

All right, here's my attempt. It's Bren again but this time practicing his parkour. The pose is from a parkour pack but didn't fit the action I needed so I tweaked it quite a bit including some angling of his body as a whole. His hand skimming the wing took a while but I am happy with how that turned out. I am not happy with the lighting but I'll look at that later. This render took almost 3 hours.

    Image Name: "Up and Over"

I mean, really, sometimes it's cooler to go over instead of under....

Not a problem Wanderer, in fact as I typed up my last post, I started a new game of Shadowrun Returns, playing as the dwarf I added in version k, and like he is in the render, my dwarf in game is a CQC type of person. His street name is SL4Y3RW0LF.

@Shinji Ikari 9th:  I like the addition of this new character.  All of your characters have the feel of working together.

@Wanderer:  Nice touch with the flowers outside the window.

@sueya:  Maybe open the mouth of the singer slightly?  This will help to indicate he is singing.  Or if he just finished his song maybe have him hang his head slightly?

@illysArt:  Sliding across a wing Dukes of Hazzard style is always going to be more fun than going under.  I know you had some trouble with the hand but I think it should be making full contact with the wing.  A slight adjustment to the shoulder may allow you to get that hand flat to the wing.  I would suggest making those adjustments on an alternate saved version in case it gets totally messed up.  I find adjusting the shoulder/arm/hands of a figure some of the toughest and most frustrating but usually worth the effort.

Maybe also adjust the figure's head so he is looking where his about to land.  Just a slight tilt downward.

Love the dog jumping over that wing with his Master.

@Kismet2012, I'll give that a try. I wanted just his fingers skimming so I didn't play with the idea of his whole hand flat. Thanks!

Ahhh...I was viewing it as he used his hand to vault across the wing.  I understand what you are going for now.

  • not going gentle on this I guess

    but here it goes

the dragon doesn't look like a challenge to fight (looks like a pet broke loose and now has to be captured with tasers by the... wow... ELITE SWAT whatever to make the owner happy again, just don't hurt that creature) and the lighting doesn't reflect imminent death if not careful with the beast

if the beast is a powerful creature to be scared to death, REFLECT that

make cracks in the pavement where the creature sat foot on and let rubble fly around the ears of the scared soldiers covering their faces with their arms not to get dust in the eyes, shooting blind from the cover

    some stuff surely catched fire

the creature already must have pray hanging out of the mouth (whatever it is)

    or spewing fire

    make us scared

@Kismet2012 - Thank you. Glad you noticed. I appreciate the suggestion.

@illysArt - Wonderful. I'm so glad that you decided to join in. I was going to say I agreed with Kismet2012, but then upon reading your response I wasn't as sure. Hmmm.... I think it can work the way you've envisioned. The only bit of advice I have to offer on this posing issue is that sometimes, even though you might be correct technically, a number of people may expect something else entirely, like the hand flat vs skimming, which I have to admit I thought at first as well. What to do about that difference between viewer expectation and artist's vision is entirely up to each artist to decide, but it's worth noting.

    And finally -

To all I've had the pleasure of interacting with in these challenges,

I have grown a lot in the past few months, filling in many gaps in my understanding of Daz Studio by participating in these challenges. Not only that but I feel that I've grown quite a bit in my understanding of the elements that can work together to make art more visually stimulating or appealing. I still have a lot to learn, but I feel that I'm not just floundering about, taking completely random stabs in the dark anymore. I debated waiting to see the outcome of this current challenge before making this statement, but I realized that the outcome wouldn't change a thing. Affirmation is wonderful, but I've come to the place in the road where I realize that I can and will continue to create art, with or without it.

So, having said all that, once my current image, It's Not Over, is finished with rendering and compositing, it will be my final entry for the new user challenges. It's not so much that I feel the need to get out of the way of those behind me, since so many talented artists are involved that it's really anyone's game, as I feel that I've grown enough that continuing to say I'm a new user after this point may begin to feel a bit disingenuous. I may continue to participate as I feel there is still so much to learn, but after this current image is finished and submitted in its final form, any future images submitted by me to the challenge will be NAE.

Some of you may wonder how it is I am already prepared to move on after such a short time. I credit this to:

    1. Having the ability and opportunity, in part because of my hardware, to take advantage of the more advanced features that Daz Studio has to offer--and to get relatively rapid responses to changes because of Iray.
    2. Having a lot more free time than I actually care to have, that I've been fortunate enough to have been able to devote to these challenges.
    3. Having a wonderful bunch of peers from which I've received loads of invaluable advice, insight, and encouragement.

Whatever else happens in these challenges, both this one and those yet to come, I encourage you all to vigorously and cordially interact with each other, to offer and receive feedback in the spirit of a group of peers seeking to better each other, and through doing so, to better yourselves. I hope to have my final version done soon, but I didn't want to delay making this announcement for fear that I might back out and plunge on ahead into the next challenge. It really is that hard for me to resist.

Only 10 days left everybody! Best of wishes to you.
