    Some great work being done..

EP.. I have now got that Katy perry song in my head again!!

This little bit of work I have done here is based on a movie from the sixties.. where they had to miniaturize a sub and some people to get inside a body and destroy the spline modeller which had attached itself to the brain stem..

It worked!! no spline models at all in this one ;)

Very cool Stezza. No need for a spline object if you use a volumetric cloud! Just stick the ship in the intestines and say they're there to cure a fatal case of gas!

Diomede, that's looking really cool! I can't wait to see it come together.

Just a heads up, but I think it's today that I need to open the entry thread! I have to double check and if it is, I'll do it this evening!

Just noticed the whole midnight MT time-Zone thingy. I noticed when I typed it as well, but it didn't dawn on me that I would actually have to do it. ;-) I may open the thread a few hours earlier, as I have to go to bed so that I can get up for work at 4:40 AM Central time.

Don't worry, I'll make sure the closing time is not moved up.

    W I P

    for Proteus...

A lot of reshading and hairy things were made for this one..

I also used a plain with a water shader placed in front of the camera for an experiment.

Primitives were pulled and pushed with the magnet to deform the blood corpuscles :)

9 lights & a volumetric cloud are also used.

No spline models in this one.

Here's a spline object I'm using for text. Maybe you all can see where I'm headed with this. ;-)

Anyway, I was going to use Illustrator to create a vector-whatsits to import into the Spline modeler, but I'm not that fluent with it, and so I found it easier to just use the vector tool in Carrara and eyeball it.

Points awarded just for the use of "Holocene."

I have hit a problem with my project - I can't reload it! I am getting the message below. Fortunately I have a reasonable render from it, but I can't do any final tweaking without recreating the scene, which I am loathe to do - it was quite a complex and busy scene, but mostly with relatively lo-poly resources.

The file location seems to refer to folders that are either hidden or simply not there! Anyone have any ideas to see if this is recoverable? I am on Windows 8 64-bit.

Phil, before I go in-depth on this problem (and have yet to read the rest of this thread) - did you get this File Open issue resolved?

    8) From this perspective you should now realize that making a three headed dog in the Spline modeler is the least of your worries!

    Just kidding everybody!

hey I already tried that yesterday , I had to get my 87 year old neighbour to come over with some baby shampoo to help the extraction process... lucky she used to be a nurse, or that's what she said, she keeps inviting me over for jam and scones now....

Hahahaha! Thanks guys...because my monitor loves a coffee-based shower in the morning!

gah, sorry about that, don't you hate it when the software just doesn't do it's job.....
did you try 7zip when it was a zip file?
seems to ring a bell, the suggestion originally was Fenric's by the way.

Yeah, that worked!!! I am sincerely grateful, I thought that I had lost it forever, I owe you one!

Good! Glad that is resolved. Interesting that it was Phil's saved file after all because the error message (yeah, don't get me started on DAZ and error messages...) didn't indicate that at all.

headwax -- and the rest of you Mac Fiends out there -- Windows actually does an amazing job of exposing information about what is going on. It is the responsibility of the programmers to make use of that functionality. This is definitely DAZ's biggest failing with their software (note: this is not meant to start another series of ranting posts in this thread...leave it alone).

Personally, I never use the compressed format for my scenes. I've seen far too many problems posted in the forums about it.

Always have backups (says the guy who almost never backs-up his stuff! ;) ).

My first scene is coming along.

I made a movie screen with the spline modeler and walls for the theater and wall light sconces with the spline modeler. The ceiling is just squashed cube primitives. The shaders for the walls, ceiling, and light sconces are all simple shaders that I made in Carrara.

I duplicated, scaled and grouped the corrugated wall sections as needed.

Edited to add screen shot of spot render.

I love it! I didn't think that is where you would take it - quite imaginative!

I can imagine what the rush out the door would be like at the end of the movie ;)

Actually, I would be much more disturbed about cleaning up the cinema afterward!

    Great render EP!

Now we just need to get Dart some free time as well!

All of the entries are looking really good so far! I'm really impressed! I need to get my kiester in gear and finish up my images.

The Holocene Park image just needs a little light work and it's done.

The Sinbad image needs a lot more work! I'm just glad I have a day off to get it done (hopefully)!

Free time is a debatable point. I just spent an hour explaining deadlocks to a colleague. I also have to setup log shipping for the 6th time on a customer's cluster that is as stable as Charles Manson...

I have Thursday and Friday off work though...family dinners (well, my girlfriend's family...Canadian Thanksgiving was last month) tomorrow. So maybe I can get my Carrara-on all-day Friday...

Cripes ...just read the "Rules" again, so I had better post these.
It is basically all the elements for my piccy, but condensed into just four, just so you can see the post work...sought of....

I rendered the "monsters" together because being so close there was a bit of shadow/colour bounce interaction.

I haven't been able to follow properly, but I haven't forgotten about this challenge.

There are so many great and interesting ideas here already, I am looking forward to seeing all the finished images.

Unfortunately, the only time I have to spend on it myself is today. If I finish it today, I will submit, if I don't, then there is nothing to be done - I am leaving and I'll only come back after the deadline. So here is what I have so far.

The idea is that the movie night for people might also be the movie night for the fairy like creatures living side by side with the humans, only hidden. So I originally wanted to introduce them as small creatures lurking unnoticed in the shadows of the house, but the garden seemed to be a more logical place, so I moved them outside the window.

The images; one is the VIP of the overall window setting. The other is the composition and lighting test for the main characters. It still needs quite a bit of work, but I already have the spline object in there: the curtain tie :).

The trees will be custom made, most object are reshaded, the house is morphed. So I am already meeting the technical requirements. And since I am pressed for time, I might leave it at that and just focus on lighting and composition. It still needs and hint of the human on the couch... I'll see if I can get away without actually importing one of DAZ himans for the purpose because they'd be a major overkill here. I don't have Lorez figures, though, so I will have to come up with something else.... Suggestions are very welcome :).

Hi Antara! Hopefully you'll be able to get it in!

Maybe one of the low-res people from the objects browser? I assume the person will be facing away and maybe all you will see is the back of the head? You could parent one of the sample dynamic hairs in the object browser to the head (some scaling may be required). They use hair caps so you'll have the right shape.

Got my entries in because this weekend is a holiday here in the states. Just wanted to thank everyone for their helpful comments and suggestions. Also, a very special thank you to EvilProducer for coming up with a great theme and being a tremendous host of this challenge. Happy Thanksgiving.

EP, Thank you for the idea!

I parented one of hr hair objects onto the really low res figure's head after removing whatever passed for hair on it originally, and I think it does the job for this setting just fine. Here's where I am at now, and I should really start rendering full res and finishing up or I won't have enough time to do post.

Any last minute comments and suggestions would be welcome.

Looking good! The only thing I could suggest would be that if you're not using the image on the TV set in the glow channel, you may want to consider doing so.

It's actually already there. I am going to see if I can magnify the effect in post using the render passes. But I forgot that the transparency plays tricks on the render passes. As in objects behind transparency don't get broken down into pass components, they just become one transparency pass solidified image. So I am re-rendering the whole thing with the window glass removed...

It would be nice if Carrara could apply at least an alpha value for the render passes.

I think I'm going to call my Sinbad character complete. Since I did this render I've added a leather like texture to the belt using the Cellular function in the bump channel.

The shirt pattern is fractal noise and a color gradient. I've also added translucency to it.

Hey! Aren't there some stunning entries so far? It's grand to see the likes of Stu and PhilW and Antara joining the fray. Evil, your work for this has been magnificent. Love Sinbad and the hair you have been plastering everywhere :)

Here's some silliness from me. I just needed to do a little case for the reel and ended up doing a dvd case ...
Please note" The Super 8 Logo stuff isn't mine and I will have to change it later.
Oh and I made the case in the spline modeller. :) Keep it a secret...
