...ahh an Ivy Bridge CPU. Those support AVX which is needed to get the speed boost in CPU mode with Lux. I have a Nehalem/Bloomfield i7 which is two generations older and does not support AVX (which was first introduced with the Sandy Bridge series)
To upgrade for the speed increase would cost me in the neighboruhood of 800$ as I would not only need a new CPU (Ivy Bridge) but a new MB (mine has a LGA1366 socket and Ivy Bridge CPUs require an LGA1150 socket) with at least two "real" PCI 3.0 x 16 slots, and new memory as my memory is tri channel (6 x 2 GB for 12 GB total) and the LGA1150 MBs are 4 slot dual channel. Since I would have to replace my memory sticks it would be ridiculous not to go with a full 32 GB (certainly not going to "downgrade" to 8 GB).
For less than half that I could get one of the new GTX970s when they are released which will have 8GB GDDR5 with over 1,600 cores, and my Iray renders will see a significant boost in performance.
I suppose, but, I've been spending a few days in the 3Delight thread learning from Wowie about UberSurface and I've been getting far better results. I've even switched my lights from AoA to UE2.
After 1 hour 32 minutes of rendering in Lux render 1.4, I got the following image.
756.29 S/p 83.26 kS/s 280.38 kC/s 337% Eff
Looks good! Reality seems to cook quicker than Luxus does, is this really the case? Thing is, no matter what the engine is, they still look like they were done in Daz Studio. Hellboy has produced the only renders where you can't tell what they were done in, though he never makes a note of what he does so we don't get to reproduce anything!

CHEERS!
That looks really great. What was the rendering time?
Have you used only UE2, or also has added some other lights, as well?
It rendered in under 3 mins, and there were some distant and spotlights in there too. It was a freebie set I got from ShareCG. I then went in and took out all the specular maps and I think he looks even better. I can't wait to get Photo Studio Kit 2 as UberSurface2 is definitely the way forward for me.
I've learned more from there in a week than I have in years. Bjorn below is pretty much the culmination of what I learned this week. It won't stop there either....
CHEERS!
PS (I got the backdrop from Flesh Forge and I set it up like Wowie did in the Photo Studio Kit 2 promos. I love the reflective floor!)

Ok, we've all seen how Bjorn looks with AoA lights and the AoA shader, well, take a look at how he looks with UE2 and UberSurface.
Neat huh?
CHEERS!
Here's a body shot. This is as far as I think I can take UberSurface, but, I'm so looking forward to delving into UberSurface2 next week.
