I found some of my old COBOL code. I need to indent the text properly. The code itself starts at column 8. Columns 1 through 6 are for line numbers. The comment delimiter is on column 7.

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Wordiest programming language I've ever seen. I had three semesters of it. Never, ever, used it. Something more useful, dBase programming, was only offered as a curiosity for one semester. C or C++ wasn't even in the line-up at all. But RPG-II was.

remembers rpg. the ibm sys/34, 36, 38, laaaa AS400 days.

BCC had a Wang system we put up our RPG programs on. I think maybe we used an IBM system in the first semester. Then the trust level increased and they let us on the nice system. I think the first semester we just filled in the cards/sheets and someone that worked there entered them into the IBM. Second semester we had actual access to the Wang via consoles and typed it in directly. I never used that knowledge, either. Let me see...I used Quattro Pro rather than 123 for spreadsheet, and later switched to Excel. I used WordPerfect (my friend called it WordPervert) but I used an add-on menu thingy...I hated those key combinations. Then I switched to Word for personal use, and also that's what they used on the job. I used FoxBase + rather than dBase (it was much better and faster), then graduated to FoxPro for DOS, then for Windows, then Visual FoxPro. So, I never used what they taught in college, I always used better products.

...I know, what good is all that COBOL, FORTRAN, PASCAL, and BASIC for now?

Yet employers still keep insisting on hiring those with a degree rather than those who learned on the job. Sheesh I've even seen a Bachelor's degree being a requirement for common office schlep jobs these days.

Morning. I'll miss 2013. All quiet today, I guess people are sleeping in. Somewhere out there in the big city there are thirty tons of fireworks, let's hope they don't all go off at once :)

Nice render. I like the soft shadows. Thanks for sharing. My lighting is so harsh. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewreply/511606/

That reminds me, I need to install Aiko 3 and catgirl for Aiko 3.

    ...thanks.

Soft shadows really help make a scene appear more naturally lit. For unclouded skies direct sunlight/moonlight (using a distant light) I use a softness value of 1%. For slightly clouded skies or indirect 2% - 3%, For full overcast I'll set it at 20% or more.

The window and light above the exit sign/door are mesh lights using the base Uber Area light with falloff active and shadow bias of 0.1 at 96 samples. For this reason I haven't abandoned UE entirely as there are times I need the light to come from particular items in the scene.

The character is Mab & Will Dupre's Catgirl Genesis using a mix of Hitomi and Jasmin. Been wanting to get her for some time as she can be mixed with any Genesis character (including males, kids, and even other toons).

Yeah, I have a habit of NOT setting soft shadows. My computer is fast enough to render some fancy and soft shadows with distant lights, spot lights and Age of Armour's advanced spot lights. Thanks for the tip about Uber Area light. My computer renders Ubera Area and Uber environment slowly. I have Jasmin too but I haven't even loaded her once.

...I think that piece rendered in something like 12 minutes at 1,000 x 1,000. The falloff of the mesh lights ended before the character so they didn't interact with any transmaps which would have increased render time significantly.

You can also turn off raytracing for transmapped surfaces (like hair and plants) for Uber Area lights which helps a bit as well.

Cool. I did not know I can turn off raytracing for transmapped surfaces. I thought I needed to use Advanced Spotlight, flag the transmap hair and plants and set the alternate samples. I learned something new today.

...the ASL is still a lot more versatile than UE and still has an improved render time overall. Setting up ASLs is so much simpler than the various Uber Area Lights as the intensity value is the same scale as the normal Daz Spotlight and the Occlusion samples are preset for maximum quality.

UberArea lights use a different scale. For example the intensity of the light above the door in the catgirl pic is 1,200% and the window glass at 300% (both which took a lot of test rendering to gt the desired result). you also have to manually adjust the sampling rate upwards as well to get a clean image without any graininess. The falloff for the AAL/ASL is expressed in meters, while the falloff for the UberArea lights is in the normal Daz viewport scale (which I think is centimeters?).

I feel both have their good points, however when working under limited memory resources I would primarily stay focused on learning how to use the AAL and ASLs and only use the UberArea lights for certain instances like creating a mesh light for say, a light fixture, flame, or vidscreen,
