I guess it's been way too long since I've seen the movie, because I could have sworn those were either whosits or whatsits.
Wife Swap: Black Lagoon
Another case where I struggled with trying to put more details into a piece than I could actually focus on. I really liked the idea of the male wolf holding the female creech's hand while walking on all fours, but that came at the expense of showing the female wolf having second thoughts about the whole situation and being grossed out by her surroundings. I threw in basically every water plant I had, but it still doesn't look quite as swampy as I wanted. Probably changing the lighting, throwing some fog in there, etc. would help. I used Erock's grass on the ground, and I may swap that out as well.
Dem Bones
Centaurwash
I started this quite a while ago, and was experimenting with Cinema4D to make the bubbles and foam myself. I hit some roadblock or another, and this got backburnered, but with my recent acquisition of @KindredArts's Iray Foam and Bubbles I gave it another shot. What I discovered is that it's super tricky to use something like that on a centaur body, because I guess the Iray decal node was conflicting with the centaur geoshell, so I had to disable that. After I finally got a render I was satisfied with, I noticed that there was a weird geometric shape on the centaur's back which resulted from disabling the geoshell, so I ended up doing my first spot-render compositing job to cover that up. I also changed the environment from what it originally was (using SquarePeg's stable builder) to the garden pavilion with some scattered flowers and Noggin's Chickens mulling around.
Bad dog! BAD DOG!!
Almost everything in this render is brand new (at least to me), which is kind of strange. Apart from the stock DS HDRI, the longest I've had any part of this scene is Ollie 8, and I bought him less than a month ago. It shows off the Alchemist's new products and the dForce torn male clothes, plus it's my first time using UltraTrees, and I look forward to a lot more of that.
Landfloating
Big thanks to @Silas3D for their tutorial about adapting the G3 Laguna mermaid tail for G8, which made this scene possible. I had to do a little bit of postwork to clean up the seam between the human torso and mermaid tail, and I need to figure out whether the seam was caused by where I put the graft, or a material setting on the mermaid human UV. I'm noticing another recurring theme of my work, which is women hanging out and just having a grand old time.
The title came about because the term "sunbathing" probably wouldn't mean anything to mermaids. Would creatures that live in water have a conception of bathing? They don't even have to go up to the surface to get sun, so how would they describe the act of lying on the beach?
Sun-drying? Great render, makes me feel antsy for summery sunshine.
What a great render of those mermaids @Godig!!
Looks like they are having a great time in the sunshine!!
My last render is also on Deviantart, now with the #toohotfordaz3d tag.
Giggles I just bet it is #toohotfordaz3d !!
(Ice)man's Best Friend
He wasn't sure how much longer he could survive being stationed on this blasted hellscape, but meeting Dante made the torture more bearable.
Wow what an amazing render @Gordig!!
I just love animal renders!!!
Rubberneck
Very cool!

"No! There was still so much I wanted to do!"
Safety First
Aww, 30 isn't that old. You're still allowed to be immature from time to time.
Holy cow LMAO!
I only made that for the monthly PC+ contest, since the theme is “29”. I think you and I are about the same age. If anything, the joke is more about how young people see aging rather than the reality of it.
When I was 23 I was in a chatroom with some teenagers. I casually mentioned remembering something from the 80s, and they were shocked that someone could be THAT old.
I remember posting on a forum where I was one of the elder statesmen at 18.
Die, Robot
Wow what a great render just love the expression on her face!
Thanks. I debated pulling her tongue back in a little bit, but I guess I like really big and cartoonish expressions.
Character designs for a comic series I've been brainstorming.
Bought a bunch of products over the last week that will get these characters closer to where I want, I've done a bunch of tweaking, and added some new characters, and over the weekend I'll start actually doing something with them, and maybe give at least a few of the characters a proper introduction.
Untitled Fantasy Project
Tablesetting: First off, I want to say that this won't really be high fantasy in a traditional sense, by which I mostly mean that it doesn't just ape Tolkien or its derivatives. There is some magic, but there won't be wizard duels, no immortal evil creatures, (probably) no dragons. Rather than orcs, elves, dwarves, etc., this story takes place in a world in which other animals evolved humanlike intelligence alongside humans, which lets me play around with the archetypes in new ways - for example, the aloof, smug forest-dwelling elves...will be cats. That said, like Tolkien, I am approaching this as dorkily as possible, specifically when it comes to language. I (probably) won't be constructing multiple entire languages from scratch, but language will play a big role in the story, and indeed already has in the world-building.
The Kingdoms of Man:
Grev (Gurovan): The last kingdom of man, now reluctantly home to all the peoples of all the former kingdoms. I decided to make their language basically Semitic, and for that we need a brief aside to explain that, although "anti-Semitism" colloquially refers to hatred of Jews, the word "Semitic" does not actually refer to Jewish ethnicity or religion at all, but rather to the family of languages of which Hebrew is part, along with Arabic, Ethiopian and several others in the region. Semitic languages are written without vowels, which insert themselves in and around consonant clusters in ways that seem like nonsense if you're not familiar with the language, like how the Arabic root "sh-k-r" can become "shukran" ("thank you"), or "shakira"(thankful), or "s-l-m" becomes "Islam", "Muslim" and "salaam" (peace, "hello"). This is why there are dozens of ways to spell Mohammad (Muhammad, Mohemmed, etc.) in English or other European languages, but only one way in Arabic: m-h-m-d.
Sorry, where was I...
Turuun is the main protagonist of the story, and I've got her personal journey worked out far more than the details of the broader plot at this point. Utarn's older sister, she is respected as a fierce warrior, although her recklessness and short temper cause concern for those around her.
Utarn is Turuun's younger brother, and joins the party as quartermaster. Secretly, though, he's there to keep his sister's destructive impulses in check more so than to perform any particular role. Peacable and friendly by nature, he is well-liked by the party, if not always respected.
Elef is a seasoned knight, commanding the party's military escort. Leads with reason and restraint, and fights skillfully.
Iriset (Iriseti): More a loose collection of villages than a proper kingdom, the Iriseti live close to nature, and unsurprisingly seem to produce the greatest number of magic users. The magic in this story won't be traditional sorcery, and I've never particularly liked the idea that magic is a matter of saying the right words and/or holding the right object. My system of magic is somewhere between the Force and the bending in Avatar. The magic that we'll see the most involves cooperating with nature to harness its powers.
Valea fills many roles in the party, serving as an herbalist and healer, guide, food gatherer and magical backup when needed. Wild and unrestrained even by Iriseti standards, Valea defies social norms so completely that some wonder if she's even aware they exist. People often mistake her boundless enthusiasm for foolishness, but she is far wiser than she seems.
Tonme: though their kingdom was not far from Iriset, the Tonme are far more urbanized, and renowned for their skills at horse-riding and archery. Their language and naming so far is basically just Japanese gibberish: things that would be pronouncable in Japanese, but have no actual meaning (at least as far as I know).
Juzo often serves as a scout due to her agility and exceptionally keen eyes. Energetic and determined, if somewhat naive and immature.
Sekuto, although he tries to project an image of confidence and assuredness, is actually quite shy and reserved. An exceptional archer and skilled swordsman, he is relatively inexperienced in actual combat.
Barotsu is a hardened warrior. Stern and serious, perhaps overly so, he clings to the old Tonme ways to the amusement of his younger compatriots.
Karsaea (Karsaean): situated in the deserts and mountains west of Grev, Karsaea was home to both sprawling cities and nomadic tribes. The cities are now either abandoned or occupied by the invading reptilians, though supposedly some of the tribes still remain out in the wastes, largely unmolested. Two of the three Karsaeans have typically "African-sounding" names, which was not my original intent, so I have to decide if that's the way I want to go with them.
Giral is the expedition's leader. Sage, historian, diplomat and cartographer, he is a towering presence in the party, commanding respect from all. Calm, thoughtful and compassionate, he speaks many languages and is skilled at navigating the cultural differences of the various peoples of the world.
Little is known about Mawasi. He rarely speaks, and says little when he does. He sees himself more as Giral's personal bodyguard than as a member of the party.
Yamowe is bold, fearless and adventuresome, though easy-going and friendly off the battlefield. Engages in friendly competition with the other more war-minded members of the party, and is the closest thing Turuun has to an actual friend.
Morlo (Morloan): the nearest kingdom to Grev, Morlo spread across the lowlands before gradually being pushed back into the mountains. Morloans are proud warriors, and tend to be vain and quick to anger
Vaxan is an experienced swordsman, cocky and impetuous but well-intentioned. @Hylas and @Serene Night: Sekuto and Vaxan are a couple, if that does anything for you.
Sidron is brash, arrogant and short-tempered. He's like Vaxan without the kind heart.
Restyled Sidron, renamed Mayosu to Barotsu, and added renders of both. Still working to get a render of Mawasi I like.
"First off, I want to say that this won't really be high fantasy in a traditional sense..."
[proceeds to introduce a dozen traditional high fantasy characters]
I tease cuz I luv. So much work! You have really taken on quite a project. Respect! It's nice to see something other than pin-up's.
The characters seem cohesive, they look like they all live in the same universe!
Some (hopefully constructive) comments that you, needless to say, can take or leave:
- Turuun: The texture of her pants looks too big, perhaps it needs a higher tiling value?
- Turuun: Her "loincloth" is doing a weird thing, perhaps it's possible to dForce that? Or parent it without fitting it?
- "Tonme": If the word is supposed to be pseudo-Japanese you need a vowl between the N and the M: Tonume or Tonome. The Japanese never put two consonants next to each other.
- Yamowe's skin looks inhuman, too metallic and too green. But perhaps that's on purpose?
- Vaxan's hair looks plasicky. Is that an early G3 hair? I find that hair from that era tends to look plasticky and benefits from hair shaders. Perhaps the PA's hadn't quite figured out IRAY at the time?
Only one of the characters has any sort of magical powers, and they're all human so far. It's definitely fantasy, but it's not HIGH fantasy.
Thank you. I also included little touches like giving the different kingdoms corresponding color schemes (blue and gold for Karsaea, red for Grev, etc.). I've definitely been approaching this more from a personal and inter-personal standpoint than being all about the quest, and it's very important to me that the characters be distinct and all have their own voice.
Probably true. I've thought about doing that.
I could give that a shot.
That is generally true, with N (sometimes rendered as M depending on the word) being the notable exception. "Nihongo" is the Japanese language, "nihonjin" is a Japanese person, and for that matter, Japan itself is "nihon", not "nihonu". Then you have words like "senpai", "ganbaru", "ninja", the brand/surname Honda, etc. There are also emphasized consonants, like "matte", and some single syllables are written with two consecutive consonants like in its raw form "matsu".
Languages are my thing. My Japanese isn't very strong, but I know quite a lot about the language, and can read and write it, if quite laboriuosly. I also speak Korean and Chinese, and have studied numerous other languages, as well as language itself.
Definitely not on purpose. I recently started postworking my renders, and I'm not very good with Photoshop, my instincts for such things are poor, and it turns out that the monitor I'd previously been doing all my Daz-related work on is strangely calibrated. I'll take another crack at postworking it, because I think the base render is fine. Also, her skin is very dark, and that brings a different set of challenges.
It's a G8 hair, and a fairly recent one at that. Lighting is my mortal nemesis, so I probably made some poor choices lighting the scene.
Thank you for the comments. Nice not to be entirely shouting into the void.
And Mawasi has landed. I need to either re-render with DOF or figure out how to get Valea's tunic to dForce correctly so that it's not clipping through her legs when she sits like that.
