I had Mike, dolled up as Shakespeare on some screen printed scarves and candles. Was a commission I did, a few years back, so probably a M3 Shakespeare.

I use them frequently, though I sometimes find it hard to make them not look like 3D characters. Many people frown upon using 3D figures on book covers, unfortunately.

My issue with 3d renders on books covers is that a lot of them are poorly rendered. The artistswhen using human characters haven't bothered to pose or light them properly. Which doesn't make for great looking covers.

Exactly. I think that's why they got such a bad reputation. I even know someone who was essentially selling his rendering services to authors, and he pretty much admitted that he was doing quick renders, and when I questioned him about the artistic quality of what he was offering, and I think he said that if he was doing art, he'd be using another medium. It p@ssed me off that he was trying to rip authors off, and I p@ssed him off enough that he had his thread removed and left.

A friend has used some of my renders (Genesis-based) for his book covers, here, here and here plus one without a figure and one that started as V4, but is migrating to Genesis (or G2F). The first one I also did as a t-shirt on zazzle as a birthday present for him, and I did one for myself with Millennium Big Cat

I've only been grappling with 3D programs for about 4 years and while I started using it for interior illustrations a couple of projects ago, I think 'Victory at Ostagar' was the first thing I've used human figures for the covers on.

Of course, my own eBooks are not to the current paradigm, being graphically enriched, letter-sized .pdfs rather than the things produced by the software which is designed to produce files fit for handhelds. I've also been posting them since before most of the handhelds out there were available. They're also all fanfic posted on the web for free reading and/or download [redhen-publications dot com].

I have done a number of book covers for print-on-demand publishers which have used 3D, but most of them have not used human figures. One or two have, though.

Yep, me too. I did a cover for a friend's novel (as well as typing the entire thing for her!). I used V4, IIRC. Might have been V3, I can't remember.

Agreed. When I decided to use 3D models for the artwork in my graphic novels, it took me months and months of self-directed learning and practice to develop a technique to overcome this look, and several more years to hone that technique to a standard I'm happy with.

Well, that's just upsetting... but there are hucksters in all industries, I suppose.

And because you're offering shameless self-promotion:

    * A gallery of my graphic novel artwork
    * The first published book in my series, entitled The Lesser Evil.

Yeah, I'm still working to find the best techniques to accomplish that too.

    This is really good....
But is there a reason "scary" is spelled with an "i"?

I read up to about number 12 or 13 of the Xanth series (which I guess are the ones you mean) and started getting a bit tired of the worn-out attempts to drag yet another pun out of the woodwork. I really could have been happy to end after number 4 or 5. Some of is other stuff (Sos the Rope, Var the Stick and Neq the Sword) is quite good, albeit minus the puns!

I've used Daz with Genesis on one of my 1930s-era pulp hero book covers. I'm planning a lot more Daz covers and artwork over the coming year.

The best way to read the Xanth novels is two or three at a time, because the puns do get old after a while.

I had a friend who knew Mr. Anthony, and he reviewed my Phoenix Tales collection.

is all the mm stuff, and like, M6, putting anyone into serious revisions?

new desire to up the genre of rendered covers :)

1st critique of covers in general, her face is too bland.

can camera framing rule of thirds work in portraits?
is it possible to crop a 16:9 ratio render to a 6"x9" cover without losing the arty-ness of it?

    hmmm
