I like 3d art, so it is a shame that so much which is used on book covers is not the best. Unlike some of the nice stuff I see in this thread. =-)
Problems for me are: dated characters, characters 'staring off into space' not AT eachother, or odd looking clothing/hair, wooden posing.
Well, the problem with book covers is that many people using 3D software aren't doing it as an artistic medium, but as a quicky solution. In all likelihood, there are plenty of great book covers being done by skilled 3D artists. It's just that because they are so good, people don't even realize it.

and i think people are reluctant to show their covers before it's published.
on createspace iz easy to update a cover and is mostly free.
i'm too embarrassed to show mine old. :red:
if i had a tardis i would delete my lulu books from the fabric of the universe
Well, the book is published and the cover's not changing now, so critiques would be wasted, really. I just wanted to show how I'd used them on this cover.
after we have a couple of bestsellers with rendered covers, rendering will be more popular
There have been a lot of bestsellers with rendered covers. Some of them have been so well rendered or well post-worked that nobody notices, others have been... let's just say not so good.
The thing is, it's all about the kind of reader that the publisher is trying to attract and the perceived tastes of that particular fan base. SF and Fantasy readers are noted for being finicky about their art, so are Romance readers, although there's a very strict formula that most of the publishers follow. Baen, for example, tends to use a lot of CG elements. Tor seems to be more interested in simpler graphics and carefully thought out logo treatments.

dpi in DS?
pixels for 5"x8" 300 dpi? which would be the best DS camera frame for the ratio?
what pixel dimensions you using for kindle editions?
thanks :)
5" at 300 PPI is 5 * 300 pixels, 1,500
8" at 300 PPI is 8 * 300 pixels, 2,400
assuming that includes any bleed required.

No bleed needed for Kindle covers, since they won't be printed.
Below is a recent cover I did with DAZ figures that I think came out well.
did you want comments on the cover?
images shows on the kindle fires.
