    When 3D is done right--it is mind-blowing. The problem is that 99% of the time it is not done well (because it's hard to do well) and that gives it a bad rap since there are a lot of folks posting mediocre 3d on the web. Most 3d art won't fool anyone that does 3d--it can impress them, but rarely fool them.

    I agree with Chohole, though. If you want realism you'll get there faster by picking up a camera. I personally don't even use the renders I make other than as reference for drawing and painting so achieving realism in 3D for me is useless. I much prefer to stylize the figures to make something a bit more interesting to paint from than replicating something I can see on the street. Even ultra-realistic painting for me seems silly--if you want that level of detail, take a photo.
