howie farkes stony creek default scene (with bridge) default settings = 1 minute 39 seconds

it would have taken a lot more than 1 minute 39 seconds to load the scene before

    ...

Still installing stuff but I am looking forward to doing more complex projects.  smiley

Congratz on the new computer!! Talk about an awesome machine!

I just got a new laptop and can finally use Carrara again. I haven't been able to get Carrara to start for about 8 months - and didn't wan't to reinstall windows just to get it to run again. Been using Blender since Carrara wouln't start, and I'll still use Blender alot for upcomming projects, but it's really nice to be able to mess around in Carrara again!! I've been moving data and setting up the new machine for about a week, should be done in a couple more days.

First time running on the new laptop - the test scene renered in 1:05 (i9-9900k)

Welcome back!  You have been missed.

That is pretty zippy on the I9, and a laptop at that.

Yup.  I'm hoping that Diomede provides screenshots.

The new 3950X is due out within a week or two.  It has 16 cores and 32 threads!  At $750 suggested retail - even though it is pretty reasonable considering what you are getting - the price is getting too high for me to justify at my current level of Carrara usage.  For animators though...

Welcome back, DustRider.  I decided to get a desktop, which I will use for rendering complex scenes, etc.  I should still be able to use my old laptop for smaller tasks, like modeling a mailbox.  Hopefully, with less wear and tear, I can extend the life of the old laptop quite a bit.  I'm intrigued by all the news about Blender's new user interface, but I still haven't tried the new version.  On the to-do list.

Sure, here is a screenshot of some render buckets.

I have Daz3D-related suff installed.  That includes Carrara, Daz Studio, Hexagon, and Bryce.  I've got the bridge working between Hexagon and Studio.  I've got all the content that I've purchased from the Daz store installed.  I'm getting an error when I start Carrara.  It says that it can't find a mimic "mdx" file.  Tomorrow, I should start installing more mundane stuff like word processors, spreadsheets. image editors, etc.

Yeah Mimic was giving me issues on the 8.5 release build

    its working on the beta

interesting how it does not have white numbers on the tiles, there is likely a limit to how many it can number

Should I uninstall the release and use the beta?

I have both because some plugins don't work in that one for me eithercheeky

Octane render plugin being the pricey one that is clashing with something in my release build,

V4 won't work in one either which is totally weird as same runtimes

    Smart Content Doesn't Suck

Might actually start using smart content now.  Wasn't worth the wait times before.

YES!  Did you do anything special in your installation?  Are you using the latest DS version?  Are you using DIM?

My plan with the new build is to do what I did before - install DS (somewhat nervous about the newest version), DIM, then Carrara, and cross fingers that Smart Content works.

  • DiomedeDiomede Posts: 15,165

I used Dim to install Daz Stuio, then Carrara, then Hexagon.  I installed Bryce manually.  I installed the Carrara 8.5 public build that shows up in the main DIM without adjustment.  See Wendy's comment above.  Might be better with the Carrara beta.  Not sure yet.  I installed the Daz Studio 4.12.  Not sure I would have had the choice to install an earlier version.  For Hexagon, I went in the DIM settings for filtering, and allowed betas.  I installed the most current Hexagon beta that I could find.  The first time I tried to use the bridge fom Studio to Hexagon, it asked me to find the Hex program file.  For the beidge from Hex to Studio, I had to go to the Hex preferences and lmanually set the location of Studio. (might have those backwards).

The only Carrara plugins that I have installed thus far are the ones that I purchased through Daz (shader tools, architools, and that sort of thing) and that get installed with DIM.  Will be a few more days before I start on the plugins.  Have to get the more academic-type programs up and running first.  I actually had a bureaucrat call me and ask me to help him find some information.  Shocking!  Need to be able to open my files while people still call me.

Soon, I will be traveling again so away from the desktop.  San Antonio this weekend, then back to the desktop for a few days, then off to Philadelphia.  In 2020, will settle down and have to stop spending money.  sad  Until then, traveling and buying toys is fun!  smiley

I manually install DS, uninstall the cms,

then install cms using post ogre standalone installer, so i can install it on my e drive.
the auto install with ds throws it to my c drice, which makes my ocd twitch.  dohh

then i manually install regular carrara, on my e drive.

    then add the native content.

then copy over my carrara pa content to a separate CA Lib,

copy over my carrara prefs file, which has the file tabs folders setup in it

i make a backup of the default extentions folder, in case i has to start over with the plugins.

i put the genesis-ayes figure in 1 ds lib, put their clothes and hairs in separate ds lib folders
so i dont have to bacckup the whole thing because of a new outfit

got my poser runtimes on 32gb flash drives, loads slower , one day will get the onboard ssd

    Ah, good advice.

Also, I really appreciate the thread with all the file folder structures.

Thanks, Dart.  I am so happy right now for other programs.  I'm trying to learn Substance Painter and 3D Coat.  Going to have fancier new critters to render in Carrara.

I'm frustrated with 3D Coat right now.

Positive - still great for UVMpping, YAY!!!!!!!

Negative - can't get the Autopo to work on my custom models.  Manual retopology works, but not the auto.

Setup Almost Complete - Except Plugins

    - Carrara is installed

    - Most of my old custom content folders are transferred and added to the Carrara browser

    - Daz Studio content that is Carrara compatible is installed and added to the content browser

    - Poser content is installed and added to the content browser

    - Renderosity content is installed and added to the content browser

I've decided NOT to install all of the plugins.  Instead, some will only get installed when the need for them comes up.  A few that I will install right away are...

Plugin to convert strand hair to prop

Plugin to make GMIC filters native

    Plugin to drape, VWD

    Plugin to pour water, Fluidos

(Plugins installed through Daz, such as Baker and Shader ops)

Which other plugins do you use often enough to install right away?

    the random color for replicatants

the save poser poses , unwrap u ticks

    I miss my new machine.

    Remember the Alamo!

On my way to greater San Antonio area.  Have my laptop with me, but it is not the same.  Going to Philadelphia next weekend.  Won't be able to do any more big scene test renders for quite a while.  sad
