I think when I get home today I'm going to go ahead and buy 3D coat even though I've still got most of a month left to go in my free trial. I'm really impressed with the software and think it will be a great addition to my Daz setup.

I am still in process of lazy and slow study of 3d-coat tools but even now I could say that the re-topology toolset is awesome.

That and the UV tools are what's really selling me. I always hated UV unwrapping in Hexagon because it never produced clean and consistent results even on a symmetrical mesh. I also loved making high resolution sculpts in Sculptris but was always too lazy to retopo and bake them so in the end they were of little use. Now I'll finally be able to put all these things together.

I am indeed jealous of those who can model in Hexagon
apparently it is very good, and I have certainly seen the evidence
if it plays nice on your computer
it never has for me :long:

Same here Wendy. Crash crash crash..... gave up! Wish DAZ would give that program so serious TLC!

I own 3D Coat as well. Never use it. I was hoping for a more intuitive painting feature and while it's not mind boggling I always end up confused when trying to use it for that. Never used it for modeling but your attempts are really nice Ghastly!

I bought 3dcoat (hobbyist license) during the Steam holiday sale. Now I just need to get my lazy self to actually learn the program. ;)

I bought the tutorial set from the DAZ 3D store today for 3D Coat. I'll have to watch those and see if I can get my mojo back up to trying to work in that program again

    Where do I find 3D Coat..... ?

I have been looking on DAZ with no results. Is it a separate program?

    Thanks.

    Yes, it's a separate application - http://3d-coat.com/

Playing with it a little more today. Starting to figure out a lot more of the ins and outs of the software. Some things don't work the way you'd naturally assume they would and I haven't found a way to set the export scale which means I have to manually resize things and put them in place when I import them into Daz.

The baking is giving me a little problem when it comes to seams where the UV maps intersect. The bakes seem to be off by a few pixels in some places and I haven't figured out how to fix that yet.

3D Coat certainly seems to tax the resources of my 5 year old laptop a lot more than any other software I've been running in the past so I've had to set my performance options to maximize performance over appearance.

Oh.... hello windows 95.... long time no see.... that's okay.... I guess....

I'd be half tempted to try a Linux version and the native Linux 3D Coat on that laptop...I've seen lots of programs that come in Windows/Mac/Linux flavors perform a lot better in the Linux version, simply because, in general, there is a lot less OS 'overhead'. To some degree memory management and CPU scheduling come into play, but it's mostly OS overhead.

Now if I can just get the retopoed meshes to bake properly I'd be one happy pappy.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to bake normals using 3D coat. here's the same mesh baked using 3D Coat and with xNormal and the xNormal bake produces a much better result without distortion across the UV seams.

Ghastly, I take it from your uploads that 3D-Coat works with Daz Studio reasonably well? When I was reviewing it (after reading this thread and seeing your high praise of it) I didn't see any indication on the compatibility page that it would play well together.

What sort of troubles have you run into, if I could ask?

Well the software handles scale a little wonky. There are a number of little things that aren't as intuitive as you'd think they'd be but over all I'm finding how to do just about everything with it. I got the normals baking properly. It turns out 3D Coat defaults to 3DS-Max normals and it would seem that DAZ uses Maya normals. Once I switched that the normals baked properly but I'm still getting a lot of artefacts in my bakes, especially in the diffuse map.

Most of those look like flipped surface normals. Basically the polygons that are rendering black have their normals pointing in the opposite direction from those around them.

Is there an option to reorient the surface normals?

If you don't mind humoring me a bit more? Like I said, I didn't see Daz listed on the supported software at the 3D coat site... could you give me an idea of what you go through to get it from Coat to Studio? Complete and total novice, here, trying to get an idea about workflow and learning curve.

I've been playing with 3D-Coat recently and this is my first successful clothing item I've made. Not perfect by any standard, but it's a start!

Very easy to load the object into Daz Studio and then apply the displacement or normal maps.

I can see I am going to have fun with this, once I've figured out how to use all the tools.

Right now I'm just learning the steps myself, but when I get it figured out I'm going to post a tutorial for sure.

Basically you sculpt a hi-rez sculpt then retopo it to a low-rez mesh and bake the normals and displacement from the hi-rez mesh to the low-rez mesh.

It seems to be a random thing though. I can burn the exact same mesh twice and get artefacts in different locations.

    CRAZY MOON LANGUAGE.

But actually I was able to follow that more than I thought I would. I will look forward to your tutorial, Great Guru.
