Thank you Novica! Those Ye Olde Clothe shaders have come into their own on this project.

I have to say, this Custom Character Contest has been a good push to learn and improve on all kinds of skills.

Very nice work, Jindi! With last year's project I spent a lot of time looking at Tudor portraits, so I immediately noticed a family resemblance. I gotta get those Ye Olde Clothe shaders at some point...

Thanks Scott. I very much enjoyed your Henry VIII and children from last year -- I'm glad you could see a resemblance beyond that red hair.

I was inspired some time ago by a modern take on an Anne Boleyn portrait by a digital artist, Rick Davidson: http://talent.adweek.com/gallery/Queen-Anne-Boleyn/4932489

Anne was described as having a wide mouth, but in portraits of that time even she ended up with the tiny rosebud mouth and eyes that look a little too high. I love Rick's interpretation of this royal beauty.

A while back I saw a really impressive 3D portrait on DeviantArt and immediately thought, "Oh, I gotta share this one the next time I do a custom character contest!" Forgot about it until just now...so anyway, here's a link to "Claire" (Molly Ringwald) by Kadaj777. The artist used Victoria 4, the Lyon texture by Danae (Renderosity), DAZ Studio, Reality, and Photoshop.

And while we're on the subject of redheads, here's my latest work with Agent Dana Scully. The forehead and nose, and probably the eyes, still need some work. Materials could use some too...

And here's Mulder. Problem areas include eyes and lips. Skin is a little too shiny and reddish, and the eye materials are all wrong. But otherwise I think I'm getting really close with this. Feedback welcome on these.

    Not an entry.
This is not an entry because I've been working on and off on it for about 8 months, and I honestly can't recall all the skin textures, etc. I used.
I thought I would share it here, perhaps as inspiration to others. Lots of dial-spinning, LOL.
If you can't tell who it is, well then, I definitely failed. :)

Very nice work, tjohn! No, you didn't fail. I'm laughing because I almost took on his partner as a project for this month! I went so far as to collect images of her and plan out what products I might use.

Was hoping to have this done earlier in the month, but better late than never, I suppose...

Need a morph? Consult the Morph Matrix!

    Thank you, Scott.
Here's one based on his 1963-1964 period (same basic model). I think I got his mischievous expression pretty well here. :)

Tjohn, I thought the first one was a good likeness, but you've outdone yourself with that second one. The expression just brings him to life. Can you be talked into entering this? You could find out the textures by browsing through the list in the Surfaces pane... but I'm sure you know that.

Scott, these both look great. The tricky part with Dana will be capturing that beautiful skin tone. The one you've used does come close and the eyebrows are a pretty good match, but I think it will be easier to tell how close this is if you swap in more detailed eyes and maybe different eyelashes (if you didn't already select those in particular). A minor thing but I'd also try altering the lip colour to be a warmer coral or brick -- in the images I've seen, the actress only went for pinker lip tones after toning down the red and going blonder. The morph looks just about there to me, nose shape is good but see how it looks maybe just a little larger?

I'm less familiar with the Mulder actor but it's a good match with images online, nose and eyebrows especially... I noticed the actor has a cleft in the chin but not sure if your morph also has this? These are just small things -- impressive work on both of these.

EDIT: sorry, I only just noticed the reference images for both. By the way, if you happened to own Livia, she might work well as a skin tone for Dana. Here she is side by side with the default skin.

Thank you, Jindi. I'll check the rules again, and if can comply. I'll enter. :)

tjohn: By all means do, if you want to. It may take some work to come up with the list of products used, but as long as you still have the scene file saved (and can open it in order to look through the info in the Scene, Parameters, and Surfaces panes), it is definitely possible.

Thanks, Jindi. Yes, Livia looks like she might work well...sadly, I don't own that one.

Got inspired to revisit an old Genesis1 character I tried to dial-spin. I wasn't completely happy with the result because I didn't know how to scale the head in the X axis, but I rendered and posted the render anyway.. Since then I found out about "Show Hidden Parameters", and today I got the proportions right, and fine-tuned a few dials. Originally I just ripped off the Mad logo. This time I created the cover in Photoshop Elements from scratch and placed it in the scene as a backdrop.
So what you see here is a DS render with no post-work. I'm pretty happy with the result.:)

HI Scott. Interesting contest. I've struggled with a few actors features in the last week and didn't have much success. I love to make characters but find it really hard to get them to look like a particular person. I like you Dana Scully, and Mulder is getting there. Sometimes it is the hair that makes or breaks it and I never have the right hair.

Here is my Ender Wiggins from Ender's Game book, not the movie. The boy was a bit younger in the book, started his training at six years old. I was trying to get a hard, sad, mature look on a little boy, don't now if it worked or if he just looks mean. LOL. Anyway I will post it on the other thread when I write up what I used, also morphs and expression dials.

Here's my attempt. I've been working on a character that looks like Claudia Black. This one is Aeryn Sun from Farscape. Any suggestions or comments?

    Thanks,
    Jill

Aeryn looks the closest... Very good, either way. Especially around the eyes.

Looks very close to me. Possibly a little younger in appearance than Aeryn. The eyebrows are the biggest difference I see and they're not that far off. If you need some brow morphs, DieTrying's morphs (for V4 and converted to Genesis and G2F, all three versions available at sharecg) have some good ones.

Awesome job. :) I think the Mad character has a little more asymmetry, especially in the eyes, but that can be tough to achieve.

Yep, it could be done with G2M if I had all the same morphs, because G2M supports asymmetry.

Wow, they are available for Genesis 2 too? Yet another reason why SickleYield is my hero, as if I needed one. These are a must-have. I am seriously behind the times.

Jill, I could instantly see this was Claudia Black. I'm more familiar with the Aeryn look but both look great. There's also some fantastic work in the entries thread... but why oh why did JoeQuick remove the turtle? It was an impressive entry.

SickleYield also converted them for G2M as well. :)
