Yep, it is pretty much the same thing. But much more cumbersome than having the knife tool.
To the next reply on the thread: no, you don't need a knife tool. But it is one of those Really-Nice-Have things. :)
Yes, Carrara should include a knife tool as soon as possible! Listen to Headwax and Garstor, you Daz managers.
(...but not if it takes away from higher priorities because there are several options to add geometry while modeling, but there is not a practical cloth function).
I guarantee that you don't need a knife tool to create great models.
This tutorial of building an iPod was very inspirational and really got me comfortable with the technique - now I build everything except characters and it is a huge, huge, huge benefit. There are multiple techniques that I didn't previously understand the value of, like the Edge Tool, or being able to cut and paste parts of the mesh...
Take a look...

Thanks for the link to the tutorial. You got this one in the resources links, Dart?
An old trueSpace course was the last "BOX" modeling course I did. :)
LOL
Now THAT's a BOX Model!!! :)
Great modeling job, by the way!
The thing is, I do have it linked to via some of the support thread links... but since it isn't a Carrara tutorial, I haven't singled it out in a tutorial list or anything. There are a lot of great tutorials and just plain 3d information articles out there... I am but one person and could spend all of my days if I were to try and track every cool bit of info I've read. The Blender community has a lot of really great tutorials and info pages that work beautifully for Carrara, Hex, Maya... whatever...
Anyways... if someone else took it to make a list of such things, like Fractal Dimensia's awesome video tutorial list, I'd be happy to put that in the Table of Contents or List of Tutorials.
Nonetheless... it would be very cool to never lose this tutorial, just 'cause it's so darned cool!
So I did add this whole thread in the Forum Help Threads links ;)
dart, yes the b0oollean with the plane gives the same as the knife tool, but it's like trying to ice a cake with a door ;)
dbuitcher - thanks for tht tut link, will watch it when I get a chance
yes " you don’t need a knife tool to create great models." perfectly correct!
last night I ate my rice from the bowl with a knife,
and the night before I ate my steak with a pair of chopsticks (not together - the chopsticks get stuck in my throat)
both methods got the food into my gut.... ;)
diomede64 - daz wont put a knife tool in the modelling room - they don't want us making our own models, they want us buying models....
recently I bought an intuos pro, great stuff for doing post ! when I learn painterx3 a bit better it will be interesting seeing how the tablet works with carrara ....
Oh... I was on the other link... I haven't seen dbuchter's tutorial... just disregard that last post
forgiven :)
HeadWax,
Although this wasn't done in Carrara, it's still a very inspirational, personal favorite of mine:
...if boys had wings, a flight simulation by Andrew Finney
Hey thanks Dart! I'd forgotten all about that one. January 2008 gah.
I never read the comments on thev video before.... I feel all warm and fuzzy :)
We used to have animation contests where you had to build everything from the gorund - lots of fun :)
Time consuming but worth it!
Roygee was part of the group. :)
To pursue this analogy, people who use chopsticks do in fact manage to eat meat because they prepare the meal knowing which utensils people have when they eat. Yes, I have often had beef (and broccoli) with chopsticks. No problem!
Similarly, I almost never use the boolean or the cut tool (the most direct substitutes for the knife tool), yet I manage to add geometry to the facial region of an organic model. How? there are other tools that can add geometry, including some that will not unnecessarily add polygons to the back of the head where it is not needed, which the knife does.
A knife tool would be useful and I want it, but it is over-rated, in my opinion.

yes I think I mentioned 'and the night before I ate my steak with a pair of chopsticks ' (i have photos to prove it and at least one other witness ;) )
I would like a better search thing in the instances section rather than a knife tool,
Mind you, never having had the chance to use a proper search engine in the instances section, I wouldn't be able to offer you a worthwhile opinion on whether or not it was overated ;)
Opinions on whether Carrara is slightly hamstrung without a proper search engine in the instances section are as worthwhile on a forum devoted to Carrara as opinions on whether Carrara is slightly hamstrung without any other tool or feature - very worthwhile.
We have a search function for instances... just start opening groups and looking around! LOL
Ga... that was bad, Dartan! Bad!
But I was actually just coming in to say that I can eat my bowl of ice cream with chopsticks quite easily. Even the really cold stuff!
Greetings,
after ripping off my subscap tendon (2o mills wide, ripped straight off the bone)
I can use my chopsticks i my non dominant hand to eat salad --- so there :)
subscap tendon repaired now (they have to cut off one of your bicep insertions and reinsert it then use a small revolving chain saw inserted via keyhole to... well they gave me a movie but there is no sound so I won't post it ....
well you know, and I can still use chopsticks in my left hand :) so anything is possible, even a working cloth sim in carrara 15
edit here's something http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oEIcrCwLWM
OW!
On that not-so-happy note...I'm working out my back at the gym this morning.
Ouch! I hope your recovery is fast and smooth.
thanks for the well wishes, all is fixed now,
I was just trying to explain my use of chopsticks for eating steak
the only bug with my arm is that I cant reach the keyboard properly so have to push the shift key with the end of my nose - consequently I have a the word "tfihs" indented in the tip of my nose...... better than "tihs" I suppose, especailly when looking in the mirror.... ;)
