One of the security updates issued last Patch Tuesday (August 12, 2014) was pulled because it caused problems for some users. MS has issued a new version, but if you have the Aug 12 version installed, you should uninstall it manually.
"Microsoft strongly recommends that customers who have not uninstalled the 2982791 update [i.e., the old version, released on Patch Tuesday] do so prior to applying the 2993651 update [the new version]." This recommendation applies to users whether they are having problems with the old update or not. Note that Windows Update and Automatic Updates do not remove the old version.

Thanks for this info.
I would have just installed the new update.
Should I be looking for KB2982791 in my installed updates or just 2982791?
I'm really confused. The linked page refers to 2984615. Is that related?
Mine had the KB in front
Anybody know just what they buggered up? Been having problems with my Win7 Pro machine (this one) all week and yes, I did all the latest updates. Now I'm wondering if that maybe broke something else after I thought I had it fixed.
Have you uninstalled the troublesome update 2982791 and tehn replaced it with the replacement one 2993651
Some people have been experiencing problems since the Main (update Tuesday) update dated 12th August, and it is the KB2982791 that is causing this.
Apparently the original one was causing some users to have problems restarting their system after installing it, which is presumably why they recommend uninstalling it before installing the new version..
I successfully removed the old one and installed new updates, but I hadn't noticed any problems caused by the old one.
Have not even been able to find that thing so far. Just did a Google for "botched Microsoft updates" to see which ones were involved and there's apparently quite a few. Check this out: http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-yanks-botched-black-tuesday-patches-kb-2982791-kb-2970228-kb-2975719-and-kb-2975331-248582 to see the list so far.
Also, adding injury to even more injury, it seems the latest fix is also broken. http://myonlinesecurity.co.uk/microsoft-releases-kb2993651-update-fix-botched-update-ms14-045/
Reports of blue screens, Kernel crashes, failures of the patch to even install both on Windows 7 and 8 machines with Windows automatically reverting to the previous state after a forced reboot. Among other unpleasantness.
This does not sound good. Right now I'm considering yanking ALL Windoze updates for August. Maybe even as far back as July 8, since it seems there's at least one of those also affected (KB2973201). Then completely turning off Auto Update until I find out that the fixes for the fix won't break anything else.
Edited because my fingers were faster than my brain/eyes that time. A.K.A. "the Byrdie cannot spell" error. )
This is the one this thread is about. You need to uninstall the one that came with the last Tuesday update, which is KB2982791 and then (after rebooting to remove that one) you reinstall the KB2993651.
That is advice from Microsoft, not some 3rd party site.
All the forum team who are using PCs have done this and experienced no problems.
OK, this is weird. I just looked up my list of installed Windows updates and I don't see that one anywhere. But I do not let Windoze install any updates automatically, just let me know they are available and ask if I want to install. On August 24, after having some issues, I allowed the updates found for that week and none of them apparently include KB2982791. So perhaps I managed to dodge that particular bullet. But I have not the foggiest why this machine is having issues very similar to the ones described by people who did get the bad update. :-/
And now I am also getting the Windows Update error 80246002 problem. For which the recommended Microsoft fix I just ran also does not work. So now I cannot even get this thing to check for updates at all. :headdesk:
Have you seen this advice http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958056
Thanks, that might be helpful. However, I do not really have a failed update, what happens is that every time I try telling Window Update to check for new updates it throws an error box saying it cannot search for new updates. I ran the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool but it could not fix the problem.
Edit: Just tried the instructions in that MS post, ran the Rename.bat file as directed. Still no success getting Windows Update to work. :-(
...hmm, maybe losing Net access from home might have been a good thing in this case as I get no "auto updates" for the workstation anymore.
It's been working just fine since.
Which version of Windows, please? I am on 8.1
My comp is having an issue during boot, it takes too long. Or longer than it normally did, and this started right after that update.
I uninstalled it and installed the latest update but my comp continues with this slow boot-up. It screwed-up something but damned if I know what.
Guess we are in the same boat.
The thing blew me out of the water for a day until I got tired of it. Uninstalled it and it’s almost back to normal. My link to DazStudio and Hexagon is lost again. Before that my programs wouldn’t open or you had to click it 3 times and hope for the best.
That’s all it took for me so I’m looking at a Mac now. I need an OS that works with me and with the software that I already have.
And what’s with all this updates and patching? I had 137 updates for W7 after a complete system rebuild last week.
All my software was working just fine out of the box but with every update patch installed everything gets buggy! "
Sorry for venting.
I’m going back to my corner to render now. :)

If you can get to it try to use system restore to go back to a goot time before the update.
Well for some reason Windows Update is working again and tells me the fix for this is available. But I have not downloaded yet because according to Microsoft it will bugger up Windows by changing the way it displays some apps, making them invisible or hidden behind other windows. They say they're working on a fix for that fix too, btw. :eyeroll:
Gonna try System Restore & see if that helps meanwhile. Of course with my luck it may not do much better. This bleepity-bleep menace I bought from Dell has been nothing but trouble from Day One. I'm hoping to get at least the year out of it, still paying for both it and the extra warranty/support I had to get 2 years ago when the motherboard & hard drive needed replacement. When it does work it works great but when it screws up it REALLY screws up. Right now I'm considering other options than a Dell for my next computer, maybe an Asus or HP all-in-one. As long as I can run PoserPro, Studio, Photoshop, etc on it, I'll be happy.
I hadn't thought about doing a restore when I got my tech eNewsletter with the story about this, since I had just installed the update the day before. I did uninstall the old one, but the new one was already installed. Whether or not that's going to make a difference, or not, I can't say. I haven't had any problems with my laptop, which is running Win7 Pro, so hopefully it's OK.
Got and installed the 8/12 updates. No problems. A single update came in two days ago. Installed, no problems. Another came in yesterday. Installed, no problems.
Nothing told me to uninstall something older before I installed something new.
Just certain people get the info to do something. I get squat. I'm just a user.
Soooooooooo. As long as I'm not having problems I plan to do nothing.
I can't do a system restore, I haven't believed in them from experience since the Windows XP days. This is one of the things I deactivate in any new Windows OS installation.
The link from the OP has a link to known problems and the solutions. The major bugaboo seems to be a corruption of the font cache if you have fonts installed in directories other than the default (I do have some). If you didn't have troubles booting, your font cache is most likely uncorrupted (I haven't added, changed, switched or used any fonts in weeks.) Also problems could occur with some programs z-order in displaying windows. There is perhaps somewhere on my harddrive a program that would be affected I simply never ran it. Won't happen now because of the update.
Here's a quote from the link, emphasis mine:
I think the only danger here is if at some point in the future you go back to a restore point prior to the installation of 2982791 then restore all your updates and the files are still on your harddrive you could have problems. I periodically clean up system files while doing a cleanup which supposedly deletes them. The "bad" files will have long since expired and hence are undownloadable.
What is not stated anywhere in the FAQ nor is there a FAQ question about it is whether it's okay to uninstall 2982791 after applying the update. As I said, I'm leaving it be.
My news is not too encouraging. This afternoon I ran the Dell tests that they recommended and my PC had issues with the SMART Short Self Test. It timed out around 5 or 6 minutes when it's only supposed to take 1. So now I suspect my hard drive is about to do me a nasty, that's the only other time I've seen my computer behave this way. The drive is a 2 TB Seagate they gave me as a replacement when the original disk and motherboard died on me barely a year after I bought the system. Good news is my extra warranty/insurance ought to cover it should it conk. Bad news is I am now having to buy another external drive to back up whatever I can salvage off the Beast, which is an expense I really did not need after my utilities bill jumped by another $65 a month.
I would so love to be wrong and discover the culprit is indeed that buggy Windoze update or something else easily fixed with a System Restore but I doubt it. :sigh: Backing up Runtime folders totaling over 200 gigs -- just for Poser, I haven't even looked at my Studio Content yet -- while praying something else doesn't crash before I get it all done is really not my favorite way to spend a holiday weekend. Hmph! No wonder they call it Labor Day!
Sorry to hear that -- I've always had good luck with Dells. Never buying another Asus again. The one I bought last year had to be sent in for repairs 3 times in the first 6 months, and support was awful. Every single time I had to nag them repeatedly to check with the service center and actually tell me what they needed to ask me before they could do the repair. Every single time it took 2-3 weeks to get the laptop back.
My first Dell, way back in 2000/2001 was a dream. My second, 2004-2010/11, was pretty good too. Except for the service, which at the time was less than stellar. Not to mention it cost me dang near as much as a good used car when all was said and done. This one, Dell #3 a.k.a. The Beast, has turned out to be a nightmare. But they have improved the service since #2 ... even though it has cost me $400 or so these last 2 years in additional warranty coverage.
Desktop. XPS 9100 with all the bells & whistles I could afford at the time. Laptops are no use to me on account of my eyes, I need a really big screen & a fair amount of RAM & hard drive space. Considering an all-in-one at least 27 inches for my next rig, since now I have to cope with mobility issues and arthritis on top of being legally blind. So I can't schlep my gear around like I used to, even if it's only moving things a few feet away for cleaning. Ah, the joys of Old Fartdom!
On the bright side, at least EVENTUALLY you got the laptop back. Many years ago when I had a laptop that had a problem I had to send it in for service, and after a bit of a delay and inquiring about it, I was told they lost it and couldn't find it. They ended up buying me a new one. Crazy way to get your system fixed. Luckily everything was backed up.
Drive has conked and I never got half backed up. The Beast wouldn't even boot properly just went straight to CHKDSK and started scanning and attempting to repair corrupt files on my C drive. Don't know how long that's gonna take or what will be left when it's done. Sending this from my tablet, bloody slow typing this way but at least I have internet access and my books. All I can do now is wait and play telephone chase with Dell Support. Wish me luck!
Essentially the same here. I always install updates as soon as they are available. This machine is on every day and doesn't miss an update.
Upon seeing this thread I went through my "Installed Updates" list and found the "fix" update but not the one that supposedly caused problems. I had no problems booting. I have no problems now. I'm just a happy clam here. I ain't gonna fix what ain't broken. :-~
(HP Pavilion HPE, desktop; Intel Core i5(dual core); Windows7-Pro; 4GB RAM; stock NVidia graphics.)
...the other advantages of a desktop over a notebook are expandability and superior cooling.
Most notebooks have only one fan that serves both as intake and exhaust and thus are prone to overheating while rendering, my deskside "beast" (too big to actually put on the desk) has a lot of "breathing space" inside, six fans, and an aftermarket CPU cooler.
Unless one is a fairly experienced computer tech, about the only components one can upgrade in a notebook are memory and the HDD.
