2 hours on the phone with Dell tech and yep, it's another fried motherboard along with a bad hard drive. Since it's the weekend I won't get the new parts shipped til Monday but at least they're gonna replace them under my coverage. Still not sure it's possible to save any of my data, the Beast is now verifying indexes in CHKDSK which is the most it's done all day. Crossing my fingers it's gonna boot after this and there'll be something left to salvage.

    Fingers crossed for you Byrdie.

I'm on my 5th Dell now (had an ACER just before my current XPS 8200) and only had problems with one Dell when the fan on the nVidia card died and scorched the sound card. Eventually everything was damaged and to make a long story short one day it simply wouldn't boot. I had backups except the last two years worth were unreadable.

It finally got itself in some sort of order enough to let me get on with the backup, no idea if when I turn it on today I'll be able to finish, though. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. If I'm lucky the new parts will last till I can get another computer, got about 2 years out of this replacement board & drive. But why the Beast keeps blowing them out is
beyond my ken. Guess I managed to get a lemon when they built this particular model.

So ... any suggestions for my next rig? It has to be able to run Studio and PoserPro 2014, Vue if I ever get around to installing it and maybe Bryce or Carrara. I need it to weigh much less than the 40 pounds my XPS currently does so I can move the thing when necessary and fit in a small space. A large monitor is a necessity as is plenty of RAM and disk space. I keep heaing about these new solid state drives, are they any good? Some people say yes, others say not quite as reliable as the regular kind. Opinions?

About a week ago I found the cause of my Windows 7 anemic issue. During those updates I noticed that my Desktop refreshed a few times by itself. Well, it seems that Windows reset itself and used older drivers!

I normally would use Driver Agent to help with this problem but Driver Agent has always been a pain and not very reliable. I found a free and much better working app. It is SlimDrivers Free!

My drivers are now up-to-date and Windows 7 seems even faster now. My biggest issue were the controller drivers. I suggest that if you feel your computer is slow to at least download this app and run the scanner just to see if it finds outdated drivers, I believe that it will!

The only problem with this app is that the driver packages it downloads can be big, in the 200 megabyte range big. You will have to be patient but in the end, it will be worth it.
