Top Selling Gen 6 Icons
Something I've been curious to know ever since we've been getting all these new DAZ Iconic Characters is, just how well are they all being received? Looking at the Top Sellers category on the main page reveals that the biggest for Gen 6 so far are Lilith, Lee, and Olympia next to Aiko, Victoria and Michael.
Seeing the later three on such a list are of course no surprise, but what does surprises me to see is that Giselle and Gianni are not among them. I've always suspected that Olympia did well, where her goddess-like curves are something that actually glorifies the pear shape of many real life everyday women. Lee is the ethnic male covering the Asian combat genre that's usually marketed with Hiro Aiko's counterpart, and with all the skimp-style content that dominates the 3D hobbyist community, I would personally find it shocking if Lilith seductiveness wasn't just as so. However, even now after these two particular characters had their 2 weeks of fame, content is still being released for Giselle and Gianni. Giselle, especially, surprises me, as Fairy and Elven art is quite popular here on DAZ and places like Rendo. I personally LOVE Giselle's shape and she's quickly become new addition to my common workflow. As for Gianni, even though male content always falls behind females in sales, warriors and barbarians are always among the very few things that actually does well and keeps characters like Freak around.
So, I'm even more curious now to find out what you all think of this as well as which new characters have found a success with you and your interests.

The Gianni Pro Bundle is definitely on my wishlist.
I'm a bit of a heretic in the iconic characters department. I always use my own custom body morph so the only iconic characters I've ever bought are Victorias Four, Five and Six.
Cheers,
Alex.
For Giselle, I would assume that her shape is just so unrealistic that it cannot be used for anything except a particular kind of fairy, thus she can only cater to a very specific group of customer.
And maybe the rest of her pro bundle items didn't appeal to too many people. I gotta admit I can barely even remember what was in it.
That Top Sellers list is updated weekly and regularly changing its composition, so I remember seeing Gianni and Gia and Giselle at the top on there in the past, and since Lilith is still considered new, she's still garnering interest and sales. Every iconic character appeals to different segments of the market and different genres artists render. I don't know if DAZ has ever posted an all time top sellers list.
True, but that's the thing about Giselle, she's a Fairy/Elven type character, a genre that's always well supported both here on DAZ and over at places like Rendo every generation. If artists and vendors aren't dishing out renders and content for skimpwear, it's usually that.
I have Olympia, but can never get her to render well.
Honestly, I look at all of the new G2 shapes as essentially just really fancy morph packs, so the decision as to when/if I'm going to buy them usually comes down to the contents of their bundles. Unfortunately, DAZ seems to be working hard at making the bundles less and less attractive, as the additional UVs are rarely supported by anyone after the initial product launch. And... if what happened with the various Gen 5 figures follows through... they'll most likely be completely abandoned by DAZ whenever Genesis 3 comes along and we'll only be able to use them again after some enterprising PA decides to invest the time to make the after market products necessary to make them usable. So while the skins are a nice bonus, I don't see them as having as much value as a texture set based on the V5 or V4 UVs.
So, that means that it really boils down to whether the hairs and costumes are enough to make the investment worthwhile. Thus far, in the G2 cycle, I've made "first release" purchases on the Pro Bundles for Josie, Jayden, Aiko 6, and Lilith, though the latter was mainly because, with various discounts, her Pro Bundle ended up being only about $30. I also eventually picked up the Pro bundles for Michael 6, Olympia and Stephanie 6when they went on sale at uber cheap prices, as well as the starter bundles for Gia and Girl 6. On the other hand, I've yet to buy anything for Gianni, Giselle and Lee, and in all three cases it's because I felt that the contents of their bundles were extremely repetitive and redundant. Gianni's easily the worst offender and probablly the worst single pro bundle DAZ has ever produced: the hairs were all almost identical to hair sets already out there and the costume selection was beyond sad... he's a great looking figure, but there's only ONE SHIRT in the entire bundle, and that one doesn't even have sleeves! Giselle was almost as bad. It's not like we don't already have a huge surplus of fairy and woodland type outfits out there, and these were particularly generic. As for Lee... he's probably the best set out of the three and the Yakuza outfit is nice, but seriously, not one, not two, but THREE period martial arts outfits? ANd then to compound that, not a single braided period hairstyle? Epic fail.
(EDIT - totally forgot about Stephanie 6 above and added her back into the list.)
This is something I'd really like to see.
Cheers,
Alex.

They're unlikely to do that, as the logical weight of history would mean a list dominated by the products that had been on the market the longest.
That said, you'd probably find V4 easily taking the number one spot and DAZ Studio at number 2, given that there's almost always been a freeware version of the latter while V4 came free in a wild multitude of ways. I'd also be willing to bet that the contents of the perpetually free Anime Star Fighter set (Aiko 3, Mitsu Hair, Mech Girl outfit and the Stinger) would be right up there at the top. And I'd also expect to see A4, the V4 body suit, V4 Basicwear, the Elite Human Surface Shader and the old Mil Environment/cyclorama.
If you want to restrict things to the Gen 5/6 generations, and skip out the free items, the top six spots are pretty safe bets as well: Genesis Evolution Head Morphs, Genesis Evolution Body Morphs, Genesis 2F Head Morphs, Genesis 2F Body Morphs, V6 and V5
The thing with "top, sweet, wicked items" is that it probably takes into account only a short period, say, two weeks, so it is understandable the new DO bundles display here. Most of the stuff here is tagged with "New". I am not surprised V6 and M6 are here, but where did the classic V4, M4, V5, M5 and Genesis Evolution Morphs Bundle go? I have a feeling it displays - after the initial hype about new iconic characters, during which both the shape, the starter and the pro bundle make it to the category, which is understandable - only pro bundles. Perhaps not because most people buy them (I doubt that, at least judging from the posts on the forum about getting the base only), but because newcomers are likely to buy bigger when they see "so many people buy it, it must be a real steal". I mean, V4, V5, M4 and M5 pro bundles used to be there all the time. Even when M6 and V6 joined the stables, they remained. Now only V4 Pro Suite is left from non-6 generations.
When you shorten her legs, she makes awesome porcelain dolls.
That's not entirely true - as long as any putative G3(F) had at least one UV set that you have for G2F (and i would think V6 at least would be included) you could use the DS Map Transfer function to convert maps from the unsupported UV set - as you can with Genesis maps as long as you have V5, or M5 for G2M.
I'm about to show my ignorance here, but is there a way to transfer morphs for a character into the clothing itself. I seem to remember you could do that for v4/m4 but I don't know if it's possible for Genesis.
Some outfits don't work brilliantly on more extreme morphs, but they have to be pretty extreme to break the system, and many PA's also include custom morphs anyway for different character shapes.

Thanks for the quick reply:)
So anything I buy for G2M would fit Gianni even if he's not listed as a supported character by the PA? (I ask because I haven't bought the character yet , but I want to.) Or is he considered an extreme morph?
Top "Name-6" figures, well. I don't really go for the base figures for the figure alone, It's how many other PA's figures "I Must Have". lol
Victoria, Just so I could get Wachiwi. Not even a starter pack, just the basic... My first purchase.
Olympia Pro, No competition there, Everything purchased and some for that entire gene lineage.
Aiko Pro, In hopes of using some A4 only cloths, and the other outstanding figures.
Lilith Pro, Pending instal and testing. A lot of stuf to go threw there.
Giselle Pro, Pending instal and testing. thinking mostly of the face there. Yes the add on figures have potential uses other then faeries.
Lee, In the wishlist, for all the great add on figures.
David and Michael. I have D5 and M5 only so far, limited funds.
Gia, Stephiney, and others not listed, I just don't know yet. I haven't had a chance to look for the figures that use them with the store's almost nonfunctional search (when it comes to gen 6 add-on figures).
(Edit of Giselle 6 status)

That's theoretically true but hardly guaranteed given some of the other massive changes that have been made in DS recently, and it just adds yet another layer of hoops for Poser and Carrara users to jump through. After all, you can also run a Diesel car on vegetable oil, but how many people want to go through the effort required to do it? DS is supposed to be a tool for artists, not a series of teach-yourself courses for tech-geeks.
In the end, as PAs have said in these forums before, the reason they don't make more textures in the alternate UVs is that they simply don't sell as well as UVs made for the generic bases and the Vickie/Michaels. Given how long it took for the alternate Gen5 UVs to be made available (thank you Slosh!) for the Gen 6s, and given that G2F alone already has more alternate UVs than Gen 5 with the males and females combined, the odds are that there are going to be at least 10-12 of them by the time Gen6 is done. Will it even be worth a PA's time to do commercial UV sets for that many maps to support a handful of existing textures that's so small that the store won't even let you search for them individually? And in the meantime, Gen4 skins and V5s can still look just peachy on G2F, so I'd really rather see DAZ spend the money of a couple more shirts for Gianni than producing yet another set of UV textures that no PA will ever use.
Cybersox13, I beg to differ slightly. Tho I'm happy with Olympia, Aiko, and Victoria, There are a few that I have yet to see unless I go way back to gen 3. I'm not about to go that rout. So as a purchaser, I'll just make do with what I can till something gives.
you can only stretch an image so far, before something breaks and it looks horrible. So a map made for V5, wont entirely look good on some other figure shapes.
(Edit)
Giselle 6 Pro, is no longer in my wishlist, the pack is now in DIM.
They're unlikely to do that, as the logical weight of history would mean a list dominated by the products that had been on the market the longest.
Actually, they did do something of a Greatest Hits list for Gen 5 during the brief hiatus between D5 and G2F/V6's releases. I forget the exact number of characters were there, but V5, M5, D5, A5 and even Hitomi were among them.
Granted, the list is always changing as new releases hit the market, my interest with this thread is how all these new Iconic Characters (Gia, Gianni, Olympia, Lilith, Lee, Giselle) are doing overall. I'll agree that for characters like Lilith and Lee, it's still a bit early, but even DAZ announced on the main page that Lilith was a "HUGE success".
So, with that said it seems that the only new character standing-out on that list so far is Olympia.
And there is only like, six figures for Olympia. That makes me feel sad at times.
So few, I had to ask if the store search was giving bad info.

I am always stunned at the high volume of new female morphs that keep coming out, apart from all the new bases.
Like with this PA sale, there is a serious lack of males for me.
I am wondering, could it also be a matter of the PA's preferences to work on females, aside that they sell better?
Needless to say, there was a promotion on Aug 7 where people spending $50 or more got a free Gen 6 character and Olympia was the newest female figure offered. I imagine that may have tilted things just a little. That said, Olympia and Teen Josie are the only alternative Gen 6 figures to get official add-on bundles so far, so I don't doubt she's done well. As for Lilith... well, I bought her, but she had three nice hair items and after all the various promotions her Pro Bundle ended up being just $39.

I think I know which promotion you're talking about. If it's the one I recall, wasn't Giselle and Gianni among the Gen 6 choices as well? In fact, that's when I got Giselle's Pro Bundle.
Either way, I'll give you that sales promotions do help a character sell better (looking at you, Gia), however, it doesn't necessarily guarantee that people will want that shape. There have been plenty of characters I've earned discounts on, only to not buy them for simple lack of interest. People really do seem to like Olympia, though, as she's even used in many promos, and not just in the fashion of displaying supported morph's, either.
"Extreme", in this context, refers to morphs that go far beyond ordinary human variation. On Genesis, the Mouse morph would be a good example. Freak-level musculature can also cause problems when the clothing tries to follow the muscles too closely. In general, any shape that looks like it might be an actual person should have no trouble.

Nope, this promo was for a free figure, just the figure, nothing to do with bundles. Put it in the cart, spend $50 and it was yours. Had either Gianni or Giselle been in the selection I would have picked them up, because,,, hey, free! But they weren't so I didn't.

Ahh, okay.
Still though, Gia is among them. So, why isn't she up there with Olympia then?
I thought the top 30 list was just the top 30 recent, and not 'since some point way back when when it was set' - which means its only natural for Lilith to be up there as the 'new lady on the block'.
Does that top seller page cover a longer period than say... "over the past month"?
It doesn't surprise me that Giselle has trouble - adult women figures that look nearly prepubescent is a limited market. I'd imagine people feeling unsure with an inability to 'eyeball guess' whether a character is an adult or child - that could become an explosive issue in nude renders.
Gianni, Michael, and David seem to cover the exact same ground 3 different ways, to my eyes - so lacking coming in a good bundle and a big discount, I'd only need 1 of them.
I've got both Olympia and Lilith, I think in pro bundles - because the discounts / bundles lined up right - but otherwise I feel the same thing about them as I noted with Michael, Gianni, and David.
Vicky on the other hand has a different body type - but I just have the free base for that. But Gia and Stephanie cover the same ground as Vicky...

Still though, Gia is among them. So, why isn't she up there with Olympia then?
Well, first and foremost, because Olympia’s a LOT newer than Gia, so more people were less likely to already have her. Remember, Olympia was introduced in December of 2013, whereas Gia was introduced in July 2013, so Gia’s double Olympia's age. Likewise Girl 6 was introduced in August of 2013, and Teen Josie followed in October (her birthday’s next week). The only newer figure in the assortment was Teen Jayden, who came out in January of this year. He’s a guy, however, and they never sell as well as the girls. On the other hand, Michael and Vickie are still perceived to be the nominal base figures, so they're the ones most newbies will pick up.
I'll guess V6/V5/V4/etc for one reason over all the others, how many add on figures? lol.
I'm still a n00b tho, so I know almost nothing about the timeline before 2014.
(edit)
As a side note, how many people go for the pro pack of a figure, and then actually use that figure in renders? Not just tests, actual scenes with plots and stuff and the stock name-# figure?
How many people buy a PA character and then use it, as is? There are plenty of folks like that, plenty who treat the base figures as mix and match items and plenty who do both. I see a lot of stock DAZ figures in commercial art (as well as the various base Poser figures,) so clearly many people do use the characters straight out of the box.
