SIlverblade, sorry for the inconvenience. Please contact me via email, see the Reality User's Guide for the address, and I will send you the fix.
Cheers.
Paolo,
thank you! :)
Cheers.
Sounds good to me. Thanks.
Should you use LuxRender 1.4RC1? Paolo has written a blog about this. You can find it here. http://preta3d.com/should-you-use-luxrender-1-4rc1/
:Link updated:
Where? I Don't see anything on the link you provided
The correct link is here: http://preta3d.com/should-you-use-luxrender-1-4rc1/
So is this the most up to date version of LuxRender your supporting currently or is there another? I have 1.3 on board currently
If I recall correctly you were boasting about Lux 2.1 RC when it came out so why is there a problem with this version?
LuxRender 1.3.1
Thank you. Got them both (1.3.1 and the OpenCL version too)
I forgot to mention. If you want to use SLG in Reality 2.5 then you must use LuxRender 1.2.1. As I explained in my blog, you can have both 1.2 and 1.3 and switch between one and the other.
Cheers.
I'm sorry, I don't know the difference between SLG or OpenCL
OpenCL is the programming interface used to access the GPU.
SLG is a program included in LuxRender that uses OpenCL for rendering the image.
Hope this helps.
BUT if I want to use OpenCL then I have to revert to an earlier version of LuxRender?
If you want to use SLG you need to use LuxRender 1.2. The difference between 1.2 and 1.3 are small, for Reality 2.x users.
If you want to use the OpenCL-accelerated LuxRender you can use either LuxRender 1.2 or 1.3. If you want to use SLG then you need to use LuxRender 1.2.
As I mentioned in my post, you can have both installed and switch between one and the other by simply using the Output tab of Reality. There is no need to commit to one version or the other. Keep both. When you use LuxRender, either in CPU or CPU+GPU mode, you can configure Reality to use v.1.3. When rendering with SLG remember first to configure Reality to use LuxRender 1.2.
Cheers.
I have reality 2.5 for Daz studio. I see some amazing renders that the community have created with this, but I can't seem to figure out how to use it.
For example:
I rendered this item first using standard render settings, and then with reality 2.5 (rendering for 28 hours with reality). As you can see the reality render is void of any color and looks "unfinished" (reality render is the one with black background). I know this is user error, but does anyone have some pointers on what I'm doing wrong with reality 2.5?
(MOD EDIT: Merged to make sure the question would be seen. When possible, please do a search to see if there are threads related to your questions as this will help you find where you can find your answers quickest. :) )
LuxRender 1.3.1
Blimey, I'm still on 1.1. I guess I should download a newer one.

:)
It's very likely that your specular color is too bright but I cannot say without seeing the materials. Please post some screenshot of the Reality settings for a material so that I can understand how the materials are configured.
Also, it seems that your light is rather harsh. Are you using mesh lights?
FYI been rendering with 1.4 RC all day so far so good, but as Paolo stated try at your own risk. .
Here are screenshots of my settings and lights. Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks for your help
rusty9073, the Lips material seems OK.
The main issue I see is with your lighting, which is probably 1000% what it should be.
You are new to Reality so you didn't discover this yet but here is rule #1 about lighting:
- Never use Distant Lights
One DL will give you horrible lighting, two will completely destroy your image. Two with a truckload of spots, like in your scene, is completely shredding your image to bits. DLs are not physically realistic and a "hack" used by biased renderers. At best they make your image look ugly :)
Lux is physically-based which means that it requires a fraction of the light sources that you use with a biased renderer like 3Delight.
Spots are also not very useful. They are not as bad as DLs but they can be pretty bad. Used in a large quantity, as you have them in the scene, they are going to give you a biased look and take too much time to render. Please read the Reality User's Guide for useful information about lighting. A few minutes with the RUG will save you hours of trial and error.
My advice is to delete all the lights and simply add one single mesh light.
Render with that and see what difference it makes.
Hope this helps.
Reality is back at 50% off, last 24 hours!
This does help Pred-a-3d. Thank you! I'll read the RUG, work with a single area/mesh light, and see how it turns out. Thanks again for your help
You're very welcome. Please let me know how it turns out.
Just to add a comment, all those lights are the reason you had it running for 28 hours. I rarely use more than two lights and sometimes get pretty good results with only one. That's one of the reasons I prefer Reality: I could never figure out those complicated lighting rigs used to get decent results in 3Delight.
Thanks to Paolo for the bug fix! :)
Ok, this is a comparison.
I almost never use Poser itself to render (I export to Vue mostly)
I use Maxwell when I'm making Rhino models, and so I'm used to it but not very proficient.
Rarely tried render of an import and after had render running a few hours, awful problem came up: mesh smoothing of Poser to Rhino import wasn't fine enough, ack!!
so let it complete to SL I wanted, not fancying 8 hour render again will see what I can do with Photshop to disguise the polygonal edges, sigh
But, it produces a lovely end image as I'm going for atmospheric look that some Photoshop tweakery will make good :)
Finally here is Reality/Lux, of which I've got almost no experience, and that's very nice! ability to directly tweak materials is awesome :)
Hi Silverblade.
Thank you for the write-up. Indeed you highlighted a key concept about Reality: it's not just what you do but how you do it. By having the whole process integrated in your program of choice, Poser or Studio, it is easier, funner and faster to get the results that you want.
Thanks again.
any benefits you're seeing? I'm thinking of upgrading.
Aye! It's very easy to tweak materials etc with Reality, really sweet :)
Anyone have links to good tutorials etc on getting best from Reality/Lux using Poser (or Studio, one day I may switch)?
I love Vue but its lack of unbiased rendering hurts character work :/
