Install Manager

davidcaputokeenedavidcaputokeene Posts: 131

I must be stupid but I cannot get install manager working with the DSON importer nor install V6 so it shows up in DS 4.7.

I get error:

nstall Manager cannot find a required path. The package for "DSON Importer for Poser (Win 64-bit)" requires that the installed path for "Poser Pro 2014, Pro 2012 (64-bit)" be defined. Make sure that a path for this application is present on the "Applications" page of the "Settings" dialog, then try again.

and I have tried to understand and implement the Applications and path settings. The literature is very opaque and not intuitive at all. I have spent hours trying to just get V6 installed so I can import export from DS. I am about to abandon the whole investment. It can't be this difficult or why would there be anyone using DS.

Help - anyone?

Click the gear icon to open preferences, then go to the Applications tab. Click the + to add a new application, and in the dialogue set it to PoserPro 2014 64, using the drop-down lists, then click the ... button to set the path to the application.

hanks Richard - now I see V6 loaded on the 'smart content' side but not in scene content and when I double click load I get - "files could not be found
    /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 2/Female/Morphs/DAZ 3D/Base/PBMNavel.dsf
    /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 2/Female/Genesis2Female.dsf
    /data/DAZ 3D/Genesis 2/Female/Morphs/DAZ 3D/Victoria 6/CTRLVictoria6.dsf"

    Any suggestions?

Did you install the Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials? Victoria 6 is a character expansion for the basic G2F.

Richard - First thanks for your help so far - have problems or cannot understand how the Install manager works after hours messing with it. It appears that I cannot install to 2 locations - (1) a poser external runtime for Daz content " C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\! DAZ Content" and 2 the "recommended" (which seems uneditable in the installation panel -"C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library"
My 2 problems are I don't know if the Daz studio path is correct - I seem to have a library entry with some genesis content loaded in the 'file section of content in DS - but I do know that the stuff shows up in Poser runtime if I install to that path being specified. I don't think the DS path is correct although? Next problem is that I seem to have to secify the install to this path - so if V6 - V6cf and essentials are in one -say poser - if I want to send the same V6 to DS it uninstalls from poser and then I try to install to DS.
Could you give me (or can I find a clear step by step description) of the paths and the setup in Install amnager and how to get common access to content from both Poser and DS? This has been 2 days and I am more confused than when I started.

You do not need to have a separate location for Poser format and DAZ Studio format, even to use in Poser itself.

If you install everything to the default location C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library, then that folder also contains a folder called Runtime which Poser can use.

If you also use DAZ Studio, you need to go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, and enter the above path for BOTH Poser and DAZ Studio Formats.

If using only Poser, then also enter that path as a Poser library folder, and Poser will pick up the runtime from there. You always enter the path that 'holds' the Runtime folder in Poser, and NOT the runtime folder itself.

You can of course, install your content to any folder of your choosing, but that folder, whatever it is called, will still have a folder called
Runtime which is what Poser uses. DAZ Studio format figures (DUF) are held in the People folder, and Poser cannot read them without the DSON importer and the Poser CF files.

Richard - I followed or think I followed your instructions and OK I am now getting some files in poser and DS but not others? Attached are screen shots of my Installation and settings screens in Install manager. I don't know at this point which end is up. Any problems you see in the paths and settings? Thanks for your help.

Your 64 bit application path should just be Program Files, you don't want or need the path to Poser in that.

The second DAZ Studio path in Applications is, or should be, wrong.

Now nothing is working again. Here are the latest settings. There must be something wrong here that after 3 days I cannot understand or see. Sorry to be a bother but I have so much invested now I'd like to solve it.

Richard - could it be that there is something screwed up with the 'My DAZ 3D Library' as a target?

The content install locations appear to be set up correctly -- the Applications settings are wrong but that shouldn't affect content. So "Victoria 6" and "Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials" are both installed to the default DIM location? Can you search using Windows for "genesis2Female.dsf" and post the full path to it?

The application tab needs to have the paths to the applications, you've set both DS paths (you only need one anyway, for a given version) and the Poser path to the content location. In Installation you still have the 64 bit path pointing to the Poser folder instead of plain Program Files.

genesis2Female.dsf shows up it seems only in my external poser runtime and may have got there by manual copying - I have installed reinstalled manually and with Install manager so many times over the last few days that I don't remember:
    C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\poser7runtime\Poser 7\content\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 2\Female

Thanks for your help I'm close to trashing this whole DS DSON V6 trip investment.

Attached is a screenshot of the opened file structure of the My DAZ 3D library target file - if this is 'non standard' could it be causing problems?

The obvious problem is the Content folder inside the My DAZ 3D Library folder - what is in that? If it has a \Data folder move it into the My DAZ 3D Library folder so that it merges with the main Data folder.

You were absolutely right - I moved the Data folder into My DAZ 3D Library. A lot of stuff became available. But I think My Daz 3D library file is still messed up. Can you see from these 2 screen shots what I should do to normalize it? the first is the file map layout of the DS content 'file'. Second is a repeat for comparison of the path and open content of the My DAZ 3D Library. I really appreciate your help. I am starting to see daylight.

You want to take everything out of the Content folder and merge it into the My DAZ 3D Library folder - the Data folder was a test, to make sure that was the issue, rather than the whole fix. DAZ zip files will have things in a Content folder to distinguish them from plug-ins or things like Photoshop brushes, but DIM will place the files correctly (that is, without the Content folder) - manually unzipping a DAZ package, or unpacking a zip from a freebie or from another store, will often give you the extra Content folder inside the folder you unpack to that you don't want - packs from Renderosity may give you a My Library or even a My DAZ 3d Library instead - you always need to ignore any folders wrapped around the Data or Runtime folder in the zip if you unpack by hand.

Move to My DAZ 3D library folder - everything in the content folder (sub My DAZ 3D library) including the runtime folder? I ask this because in trying the system keeps telling me that a file or folder in runtime is in use. I have closed all files folders and the 2 apps -Pose and DS but it still won't let me do it.

Richard - Thanks for all your help and persistence in staying with this. I got all files transferred out to MyDAZ etc. Now the file structure in DS is flat and organised and most everything seems to be there. No DSOn on Poser though - so I'll reload that hopefully successfully. I don't seem to see genesis 2 morph packs that I bought - are they usable with Genesis2/v6? I can't thank you enough in hanging in and helping me fix this mess.

The path you had in Poser may be nested as well: C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\poser7runtime\Poser 7\content\data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 2\Female

What path did you use inside Poser? Did it include the folder named "content", or did it stop at "Poser 7"? In both DAZ Studio and Poser, the special folders "Runtime" and "Data" must be directly underneath the folder the application is looking in, or they won't find it.

The DSON importer is no longer in Poser 'no DSN module' import error. Are my paths correct see Applications and settings screen shots? Thanks again - not out of the wood yet.

In the second screenshot the path for 64 bit applications should be plain Program Files. You also don't want the dson entry as that isn't a content location.

In the first screenshot you should delete all but the first entry, then add a new entry for "Poser" as the application, "Pro 2014" as the version and C:\Program Files\Smith Micro\Poser Pro 2014 as the path.

Just to be clear what would this path look like. Sorry to be so dumb but at this point I'm not sure of anything.

In the first screen shot "Installation cannot edit or change the first entry Label=Recommended path = c:/Users/publicDocuments/MyDAZ 3D Library - Is this normal? So my question relating to your previous answer is What else as a label/path do I put here?

Also I am unclear as to which Content update button should be checked "Install to respective install paths" or "Install to selected path"

    Thanks.

I think this is what Richard means (see below), I'm sure he'll correct me if I am wrong.

In the first screen shot “Installation cannot edit or change the first entry Label=Recommended path = c:/Users/publicDocuments/MyDAZ 3D Library - Is this normal? So my question relating to your previous answer is What else as a label/path do I put here?

That is correct, you cannot change this path, BUT, you can add as many extra paths as you need. The paths that you enter are the paths to the library you use for DAZ Studio and Poser. I use the default location, so I am ha[ppy with the default path, but I also have a library for Generation 4 content (separate folder) so I have this path as well C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Gen 4 Content. I also have a library folder for toon figures at C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Toons, and it is added there as well, so, depending on what I am installing, I change the library that DIM installs to.

Also I am unclear as to which Content update button should be checked “Install to respective install paths” or “Install to selected path”

This is for updated content, ie content which you have installed previously, and needs to be updated. “Install to respective install paths” means that the items will be updated where they were first installed to (sensible?) and the other “Install to selected path” means that DIM will install the updates to the library that you 'currently' have selected.

    Hope that helps.

Since we are marking up screenshots :)

The one at the top is the one that needs to be just Program Files, the one in the list labelled dson is not a good location to use for content.

So I changed everything - but don't quite get the markup saying "add another but not program files" - another what? Content location? I have attached the two screen shots as I have them now (DSON installed with this configuration) - so could you please kindly critique them for errors? Am I missing anything essential that should be there. Markups fine by me - just like being a kid again in school. Thank you all for helping this old limping man along through the thickets that seem to have been designed by engineers for engineers. While I have the greatest respect for engineers I am obviously not one.

I meant you can add another, if you don't want to use the default folder, but if you do it should not be a location anywhere in the Program Files folders.

    From my previous post:

I use the default location, so I am ha[ppy with the default path, but I also have a library for Generation 4 content (separate folder) so I have this path as well C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Gen 4 Content. I also have a library folder for toon figures at C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Toons, and it is added there as well, so, depending on what I am installing, I change the library that DIM installs to.

And a picture says a thousand words, just use the '+' sign at the bottom of the tab to add another library folder, bearing in mind what Richard said about NOT using Program Files. Program Files is a protected area in Windows, it isn't just a DAZ Studio thing.

I just created an empty folder at the locations shown, and DIM does the rest as far as installing is concerned. The vast majority of my content goes into My DAZ 3D Library, but any of the older stuff goes into the appropriate folder, I just need to make sure that I have the folder that I want to use selected as the 'Current' folder.
