I would love to comment on this; but apparently I am not permitted to use a certain word that starts with the letter "L."

Well, maybe they could choose to open source. But the sole purpose, IMO, for their software at this point is to have a vehicle for users to put DAZ content in and make renders. And it is critical that the software is compatible with whatever DAZ develops. Otherwise they'd be making content, and the open source community would make changes to the software that DAZ has little control over, and might not work well with their new content development.
Seems to me it's in their best interest to keep the software in-house and under their control. Can you imagine if DAZ developed Genesis figures and the open source community didn't like how it was done and made it incompatible with the software?
You're right, they will need that measure of control, but maybe there could be a mid point, some kind of semi open source  where they keep the core code to their chest but open up as much of what's left as possible for people to create all sorts off patches and mods on the fly. That is sort of happening already thanks to the content store that gives developers an incentive to keep creating plugins and other utilities for Carrara. Perhaps Daz needs to realize that is actually what is happening and build a strategy around it the same way they could build a strategy around the fact that they have a healthy forum with many unofficial Carrara evangelists.....(so why not give them all badges and make it semi-official or something?). The same way they could get a bit more out of the monthly challenge by doing a bit more than just standing in the background. (*Not to be interpreted that Daz's support of the contest is in any way under appreciated!)
