    Postwork
Photoshop and FilterForge used extensively in creating textures, but the final image only has a little subtle color adjustment for post-work.

    Comments about your entry
The "drawings" on the journal pages are several separate Carrara renders (this is where most of the items listed under additional credits were used) modified in Photoshop to look like drawings and watercolor which were then used as a texture for the journal pages for the final render.

    Title- Ocean View

Created or significantly modified inside Carrara: SHADER WORK ONLY.
Shaders for wrecked boat and rocks created by exporting textures from Filter Forge, the textures were then used as the basis for the shaders for the wrecked boat (rust shader created) and the rocks (Initially did a quartz look but then did a grey coloured shader)

    Postwork
A water caustic image was generated from Filter Forge, this was added to the Carrara render in PSP.
As the light beams which were mild in the original render were reduced in effect I then added extra light beams over the top of the faded light beams to recreate the effect.

    Comments about your entry
Would have liked to have modeled a better wreck but my modelling skills still need improvement.

The Epic Fjords of Norway, or the Epic Journeys one have to take to cross them.
The west coast of Norway is full of them. Some parts of the fjords are 1000 meters high cliff-face and 1000 meters deep.
They are a very popular places to visit for tourists.
But to travel along or cross them, it takes time. 320 km can take up to 8 hours.
The ferry-port is not an exact copy of an existing one, but it contains elements from real ones. The placement is also not accurate. That spot in the fjord does not have on. (It is about 30-40 km off.)

    Title: Low Orbit

Created or significantly modified inside Carrara: I built a couple cloud formations by grouping volumetric clouds together. I built the earth by using three nested spheres with image maps from NASA. I built the sun. I rebuilt the shaders for the space shuttle as the mesh and shading domains sucked.

Additional Credits: The space shuttle is from NASA, as well as the earth shader elements.

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/55008/P195/#822944

Postwork: Pstwork was minimal due to my depth pass, volume effect and post effect render passes not correctly rendering. I did get a useable object index pass and volume primitive passes, which I used to try and blend the volumetric clouds with the cloud image map.

Comments about your entry: I've been a long time admirer of space exploration, both manned and unmanned. I recall watching the Challenger explode on launch, live on TV and it made a huge impact on me. This image is meant to portray my admiration for the shuttle program and the people that made it work. I only wish that I had the time to get my image the way it appeared in my mind's eye.

    G-Land was 'discovered' in 1972.

The boards you see in this picture are twinnies and a bonzer. Tri fins weren't 'invented' till later. The fatter boards have fishtails, the more narrow one is a swallow tail. They don't have leg-ropes because they didn't need them ;).

    Wiki quote:

A very long, world-class, barreling left hand reef/point break breaks along the east side of Grajagan Bay. It has long been considered one of the world's best left hand waves. The correct name of the point upon which the main wave breaks is "Plengkung." The wave becomes shallower and more critical the further down the point one rides the wave. It is one of the most consistently rideable waves in the world in season, with offshore tradewinds and often plentiful swell between the months of, roughly, mid April to mid October.

Thank you Stonemason Daz and Stezza!

Title: The Wondrous Courage of Little George vs the Insidious Night Dragon

Created or significantly modified inside Carrara: The cardboard tube 'sword' little George is wielding was entirely created and textured in Carrara in the Vertex modeling room. Also the K4 I'm using was retextured in Carrara as well, various glow effects to the 'sword' and the creature's eyes and mouth were done and rendered in Carrara

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/55008/P210/#824731

Postwork: Thanks to the recent excellent thread by Joemamma, did my first real postwork, mostly adjusting levels and curves to enhance the colors I liked, and to sharpen the image slightly. Also had to postwork add in several render effects done in Carrara (the blue glow for the cardboard tube 'sword' and the glow effects for the creature's eyes and mouth)

Comments about your entry: I actually misread the title to the challenge, and originally thought the focus was on 'Wonder'. I had been reading a bit of Calvin and Hobbes, and made me recall what the world felt like when I was a boy: it can be a scary yet fun and always imaginative place. Also, what kid hasn't taken a cardboard tube (usually left over when the Christmas wrapping paper is used up) and turned it into an impromptu sword? I hope the concept translates to the render, but in my mind's eye this was sort of what was wondrous about a boy's childhood. After starting to put together my render I realized that probably the emphasis for this theme was more likely meant to be wonders of the world like historical and natural places of note, and I probably should have switched my entry subject, but I really wanted to follow up on my concept and develop it.

Fewer entries does not make for an easier choice!

My votes are for (by entry number):
    Entry #1
    MDO2010 (Mark D. Olsen)
Very well done. The render gives the viewer a real sense of nostalgia as if they were thumbing through a long lost explorer's journal.

The detail in the image is amazing. You get a real sense of the environment. The WIPs were also very helpful and informative. I know they've given me some ideas!

    Entry #8

I can almost here the kid making lightsaber sounds as he swings his cardboard tube around to confront the monster under the bed.

I love underwater scenes. I probably would have voted for it if you had put in a spline squid. ;-)

Shlomi, neat idea on how to create the frieze on Parthenon. I may borrow your method for a project I want to try. Amazing work on the model of the building as well. I think that it would have benefited from some more texture work, but the great thing about these models is that they can be saved and refined and used in other scenes. I look forward to seeing future iterations of this one.

I finally stole some time to visit my favorite forum to find I've missed yet another incredible challenge. Happily, there is still time to vote! Excellent entries everyone!

    Entry: # 1
    Artist MDO2010 (Mark D. Olsen)
    Title: Adventurer’s Journal

The materials and lighting are outstanding. I love how the journal entries and photo were created.

    Entry #4
    Artist: Pimpy
Title: The Mayan pyramid of El Castillo in Chichen Itza

The modeling and scene details are incredible. I'm floored by what was achieved with displacement on the idol panel.

    Entry # 5
    Artist : Varsel
    Title : Time for Ice-cream

Lovely scene and modeling. I particularly like the atmospheric perspective, sense of scale, and beautiful rendering of the water.

    Entry #8
    Artist: Jonstark
Title: The Wondrous Courage of Little George vs the Insidious Night Dragon

Very nice story telling in this scene. I love how the dragon seems about to spring from under the bed and how the scene is revealed by the sliver of light from a partially open door.

As usual, I procrastinated voting because I'm so indecisive and it's difficult to choose. I finally narrowed it to my top four choices (at least for the next 10 minutes before I change my mind again) so I better vote while the 'iron is hot'. Or something...

    Entry # 1
    Artist MDO2010 (Mark D. Olsen)
    Title Adventurer’s Journal

This render is a triumph in every way, especially watching in the WIP strand and seeing it's actually several different renders combined in one. All the material texturing is first rate; if I didn't know any better I'd swear this was an unbiased render. The cat statue looks freaking real, the parchment and bookmark look like I could reach out and touch them, the 'photo' is totally believable, the magnifying glass and the pen too, and the 'sketches' are some of the best non-photorealistic render versions of drawings I've seen. I just fell in love with this one every step of the way.

    Entry # 5
    Artist : Varsel
    Title : Time for Ice-cream

One of the places in the world that I have always wanted to see are the fjords of Norway. This looks different than what I pictured in my mind's eye, but looks like a real place, and the care and attention makes this nearly look like a photograph. The flowering tree is wonderful, the building and people just look very real-life. The boat gives a nice sense of scale. I would have thought the water would be more blue and surrounding terrain a bit more green, but then I've never been there. Excellent work.

Title: The Mayan pyramid of El Castillo in Chichen Itza

There's a lot going on in this scene, it's well worth making sure you view it in full size. The vegetation looks fantastic, and varied and looks realistic and natural. Love the vines overgrowing the top and steps of the pyramid. The pyramid itself looks great too, the rough stone texture really works here. Almost lost in the near vegetation is some broken stonework, that really sells the scene. The mist and the overflying birds, it just all works, not to mention the sky looks beautiful.

    Title: Low Orbit

Excellent use of lens flare and effects, love the twinkling lights of the nighttime cities down on earth, the space shuttle looks very realistic, and you can see the edge of the lower earth atmosphere. What's not to love?

Also wanted to compliment the other entries, which I very much enjoyed and learned from as well (particularly neat was the trick Shlomi used to create the statues, the very realistic surface of the ocean and the various corals and water vegetation in Bunyip's scene, and the tons of interesting stuff to look at in Headwax's surfer camp (feels like I'm seeing a real place viewed through the nostalgia of memory). Even though we had less entries this time, it was still devilishly difficult picking what to vote for, and I easily could have gone with other choices, so just wanted to say excellent work from everyone.
