LOVE sculpting "MORPHING" with the new Genesis 9!!!

So I wanted to see how well making a new character would be with the new G9 figure. I removed everything (eyelashes, eyebrows, teeth) and exported, as you do, to an obj file and moved the obj into ZBrush. Everything went pretty much the same except it was so much easier sculpting the face around the eyes and mouth! So great. I was hoping that there wouldn't be a problem seeing that they were talking about how more realistic the new G9 was going to be and then talking about the HD textures. I didn't know if maybe that was also going to mean a totally heavy mesh which Zbrush would have a hard time with or not even open correctly of which I have had that happen to me before when I forgot to use the "BASE" mesh resolution. There is nothing fancy here. This took me about 10 maybe 15 minutes. I wanted him to have a "swimmer's build" type of body. I added a little more muscle tone to the arms and widen the shoulders a bit. Added some more muscle tone to the calves and the thighs as well as added a faint start of abs and widened his pecs but still kept them pretty flat, although maybe I should have added a bit of curve. I reshaped the eyes and narrowed the nose bridge and reshaped his nose and then gave him slightly fuller lips and a stronger jawline and added a chin cleft. I must say that I was impressed with something that I just threw together. Well done DAZ team!

Yep, one of the best features is the development tools and support for people to make their own morphs!

At first, I was turned off by the crappy joint bend morphs, but they're made basic because it allows for universal morphs, as they had to be less specific to allow for more variation. Pretty brilliant if you ask me… though I still would love to throw my money at some official character morph packs!

That morph looks great! And I agree 100% on the improved experience. I know doing custom morphs isn't for everyone, but I plan to be way more selective in picking up morph packs for G9 and it being so easy to work with is a huge help.

I agree Takezo. Sometimes You just want to load in a character and then maybe tweak it slightly to change it up from everyone else but you don't want to break out the whole process of taking it to Zbrush. I'm hoping they come out with some soon!

THANKS Plasma_Ring. It was just thrown together. I'm in the same boat as well but I do agree with Takezo also. But as I stated above, I do like to get morph packs and use them with PA characters that I love but just want them to be a tad bit different. Though I did create about a hundred-something individual morphs for the genesis 3 male and female to add to my purchased morph packs because there were some that I wanted that the packs didn't have or do just the way I wanted.

That bent knee looks kind of rubbery. Did you adjust rigging to shape?

It is incredibly rubbery, and wait 'til you check out the metatarsal bends for the feet, it's literally like rubber, (This is by design, as it's a feature) and we will definitely need some 3rd party Rigs/JCMs; desperately!

And no, we should not have to adjust “rigging to shape” for an out-of-the-box figure! ⇐

I'm talking about DAZ's first party character, by the way… I'm using your phrasing as a descriptor for Daz's 1st party character as a general statement. ⇐(moot point)

EDIT: My thanks for the clarification of the metatarsal bends, it makes more sense now!

  • The metatarsal is simply rigged differently than G8. It's now a counter-rotation bone meant to move against the bend of the foot to achieve the same shape result without interupting the shin>foot skeletal heirarchy.

Oh, thanks for the clarification, I'll edit my previous post!

I'm hopeful the male figures for G9 will look good, but the male default shape and his ample bosom aren't a good sign.

How will we eliminate the pectoral under boob?

No Barbult I did not. I wasn't trying to make a finished PA product, lol. I'm not that good. I was showing how impressed I was with the ability of ease of use for the morphs. I just made these morphs literally in 10 minutes.

  • I am not sure I understand the comment there. Are you asking if it can have a flat chest? Yes.

So far I had no problems with moobs in clothing :) If you create on the male figure then it will look just like you create it.

Definitely is fun to sculpt. The new tools are very interesting. Still working on fully understanding what they can do but the templates include basic morphs is fantastic.

Looks like you'll have to crack open ZBrush or Blender's sculpting/modelling tools for right now, which would be made much easier once we get the character morphs…

I'm fine with waiting, there's no rush for me. I'm thinking it's going to be awhile, anyway. Victoria 8 debuted and Olympis 8 came out before Michael 8. V7 debuted and there was Eva, Bethany and Karen before Michael 7.

Oh, what, I should have said was: “body-part morphs to make your own characters,” and instead, used “character morphs” as it's not quite such a mouthful! xD

So much easier...eyes slanting down morph no need to worry about the eyeball, lashes or tears.

It's not hard at all to smooth out in ZBrush, so I expect there'll be morphs that do the same.

Nice work, yeah it's quite the challenge to sculpt with this mesh as the UVs don't follow the topography of the human figure as much as other UVs from previous generations, so you'll have to know just where the bones are and how the muscles relate and follow them, particularly if you're going for accuracy over stylistic body morphs!

I tried a glute morph and whoa, looks like I'll have to go back to the drawing board as my glute morph looks horrible!

The render still needs some work due to white artifacts but the morphs on the head are mine with V9 Body and one of the base textures.

Nice face morph and scene, yeah those artefacts are pretty jarring, but still a great piece!

Thanks, I've located that it's being caused by the environment set. I'll need to hunt some more.

Body's I'm still working on learning more about the anatomy.

  • They all look really cool, it's fun to see what people are creating with this different topology

  • I love Genesis 9. I took her for a test spin in Zbrush. I am now sculpting all her pores and wrinkles, all one by one.

Yes, very inspirational! Especially for people that are not used to create their own morphs. It enables one's creativity and maybe also how to make morphs yourself.

I totally agree! I think as far as character creation goes, that G9 will be the best at easily creating morphs and characters while not dealing with a lot of the headaches from past generations such as worrying about the teeth and eyes deforming. I know there are pros and cons to every generation but this one seems, so far, to be doing it for me. But it is still new so we'll just have to wait and see.

I never had to worry about eyes and teeth when i use zbrush, you can easily hide them there. The mesh is so smooth that it deforms easily. And also gen 9 is a blank canvas it still breathes life and character in them , however the challenge in Gen 9 is the joints. You can morph the Donald Duck out of it, you cant avoid adding new joints corrections.
