    Yeah, the yellow was from the AtmoCam, gold setting. I was trying to get the idea of dust in the air but you're right, its really yellow - thats a setting that requires a subtle touch and I'm just rushing through it. I don't have time to rerender so I've adjusted the colors. I also worked the smoke a little, it probably was just the yellow making it look green. The old man is the old wizard morph and the aging morph, its a really good character builder tool.

    Yes that is it the implication is there already no need to mess with that part!!! I think you did an amazing job on the render over all now that the yellow toned down some!! Thumbs up for sure Joe!!!

    this tone works much better, the some is better like this. What i now notice, and I'm not sure it was like this before, is the the wall is kind of overexposed in the upper part, so try to get the contrasts a bit more in again maybe?

    She's at Stonemason's "The Pool House". From what I understood from the links in the first post, atmosphere wasn't just about fog and god rays, so my concept was the contrast of her pale skin against a (mostly) red  and darker surrounding.

    But it was somewhat of a longshot so I'm ok with putting it away as a bikini-shot. Even if I haven't quite got the concept of atmosphere, I've still learnt much by following this thread this month. I'll hope for a concept that fits me better for November. :)

    I wouldn't put it awy just like that, as I think your idea is worth trying around with. I didn't mean to be so negative, with this hint that gave me more of an idea what you where aiming for. From what I collected with this aproach it is much depending from the distribution of dark and light areas in your render. I guess one way is to look at it in grey values and see if there is tension present. I maybe would try to place her further back in the room, the darkness more surrounding her.

    Software:  DAZ Studio 4.8

    Postwork: none

    The family of rabbits stayed in the tree all day for safety.  Now day has turned into night time, and a shroud of darkness has befallen.  Outside, rain is falling heavily, each rain drop glistening in the bright moon light.  The baby kits have retreated further back into the shadows where they sleep till morning.

    All along, I wanted to work on a night scene but found initially it was better to light the scene in daytime in iray.  Then once I had that, I sould start converting the scene to night with as much atmospheric conditions as I could use.  This is my first attempt ever at adding rain, fog, clouds and mist to any scene I have created.  I really appreciate the information you guys have posted as I went carefully through the different techniques suggested.  

    Here are some of the tasks I worked on to get to where the scene is now.  I took my background and in PS I converted it from daytime to night.  I grabbed a dark sky with bright moon from free image source online.  I had never done this before but it turned out better than I thought.  I love the way iray can be setup as an emitter and will enable an image to become a light source.  I then added many planes in the scene for the rain drops.  This took a LOT of experimentation.  Getting the scale right was tricky.  I have also been trying diffferent settings for the temperature, emission strength.  I still may lower the brightness of the drops although it does give a ethereal feeling to the image I think?  Then I added some fog/mist as I think that there would be some of this kind of hanging around.  A muggy, dampness to the air.  This was using another plane.  I then felt I needed a "blanket of mist" that would lower the moonlight intensity a bit.  This was with multiple atmosphere cubes of progressive intensities going into the distance.  

    During and after all these were added I continually updated iray parameters and performed quick test renders.  Unfortunately, my laptop is not as powerful as I would like, but it does have an nvidea graphics module.

    This is very interesting. If you could somehow get little circular ripples in the puddling water in front of the den, that would really sell the rain. If the puddling water is a separate object, you might be able to create a normal map for it, or perhaps a displacement map. I've experimented with these and have had mixed results, but when it works (i.e. I didn't screw it up) it can produce a really cool effect. Not sure if there is something in the market that could do it.

    You've got some of the rain drops going in different directions, perhaps a few more. Perhaps also some more variety in the size of the drops.I think you are right about the knocking down the brightness of the drops a bit - especially if you vary it on each plain. You've got a pretty cool sense of depth there with the rain drops. To me this looks like it is right on the edge of being spectacular.

    I'm looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

    The wall was masked by a smoke layer that I failed to turn on when I adjusted by colors. It had rendered out overexposed, trying to get an implication of bright sunshine. But the more I look at source materials the more I like the "Orientalist" style of the later 1800s. Corny I suppose. Anyway I adjusted the brightness/contrast on the wall, and applied some smoke for good measure. Of course that really points up the fact I don't have a hooka model for the old man to be smoking - maybe that is what the men are questioning; why is your drinking cup smoking and possibly birthing a dragon?

    Yeah...I thought about adding flat ground fog.  Maybe I'll try that next.  This is supposed to be rising, swirling mist.

    Ok..this is probably the last attempt.  I replaced the rising mist with a flat ground fog.  It is still swirling up on the left side though...

  • Just saw this new fog product in the shop and my first thought was, "I wish they had come out with this earlier in the month!!"  If it works, I think this product would have made my render SO much easier.  Although, I guess I do have to say that I'm glad it didn't as I learned some new skills.  However, it was the first thing that popped into my cart.

    Exactly my reaction. Halloween renders in general would have been easier - I never did produce one I liked at all. But I've been saving so much money on the PC+ sale I'm broke, so I have to wait a bit on getting it, but it seems to be one of those "must have" products.

    Okay, only got to 50% converged on this one so unlikely to be ready for the contest (although I will probably enter the dramatic "Akira" esque render for my second anyway!) but thought I'd show this one for some feedback - I'm not sure about Dexter's right hand pose, might be better if I have him holding a pen or something but still its getting closer to the noir style I've been trying to recreate - postwork in Photoshop to convert to B&W

    Nice scene overall. Since you pointed it out Dexter's hand could use some work, but I'm not sure if I would have noticed that otherwise. His chair seems a little big, or maybe he is too far forward a bit? And the dame's purse makes that area a little to attention grabbing, confusing her shoe and the hem of her dress; maybe move it to behind her chair?

    Well I think if you leaned her upper body more forward with her hand on her chin like that she would look a lot more pensive than she does right now which might improve mood a bit.

    This is very cool but the one thing that stood out to me was that she seems to be looking a bit past him and not at him.  This might be on purpose so if it is feel free to ignore me.  I love the red shoes and the hint of red in the smoke

    The fog definitely improves this but I don't know how to help with depth of field since I am probably newer than you are lol!

    Like this a lot, it definitely has a desert feel to it and the smoke dragon is great.

    I'm so excited to see all of our final works over in the entry thread.  Lots of good stuff here and its so cool to see things from start to finish.  Wish I would have had time to do more than one but I am happy that I got done what I did

    No worries :) I appreciate honest answers and I don't think you were negative. Also thanks to Sonja11 for the comment. But I've left the image to be a bikini-shot and moved on.

    Even though I really should do other (non-DAZ related) stuff that needs to be done before the end of the month I sat down with DAZ today and worked on something else, more fitting to this month's theme. Making my first use of the Atmocam for Iray that came not long ago. I'm attaching a first version of it here. But I'm currently rendering a new version where the sun is visible and that more clearly shows the path through the center of the forest. It's at 25% now after almost 2½ hours so I'll let it render over night.

    Yes!  That's pretty much exactly the effect I had in mind.  I never did get around to playing with AoA's Atmospheric cameras or lights.  I just went the quick and easy way with Photoshop brushes..  I'm afraid it shows...

It's at 25% now after almost 2½ hours so I'll let it render over night.

    Ok, right now she is a a nice model in a bikini. I don't see much of an atmosphere right now, so what was your intent with it? Where is she sittingright now? I don't get the background. Maybe you can place her on a beack with the sunlight coming through the palmtrees? just some suggestion.

    She's at Stonemason's "The Pool House". From what I understood from the links in the first post, atmosphere wasn't just about fog and god rays, so my concept was the contrast of her pale skin against a (mostly) red  and darker surrounding.

    But it was somewhat of a longshot so I'm ok with putting it away as a bikini-shot. Even if I haven't quite got the concept of atmosphere, I've still learnt much by following this thread this month. I'll hope for a concept that fits me better for November. :)

    I wouldn't put it awy just like that, as I think your idea is worth trying around with. I didn't mean to be so negative, with this hint that gave me more of an idea what you where aiming for. From what I collected with this aproach it is much depending from the distribution of dark and light areas in your render. I guess one way is to look at it in grey values and see if there is tension present. I maybe would try to place her further back in the room, the darkness more surrounding her.

    No worries :) I appreciate honest answers and I don't think you were negative. Also thanks to Sonja11 for the comment. But I've left the image to be a bikini-shot and moved on.

    Even though I really should do other (non-DAZ related) stuff that needs to be done before the end of the month I sat down with DAZ today and worked on something else, more fitting to this month's theme. Making my first use of the Atmocam for Iray that came not long ago. I'm attaching a first version of it here.     Looks like a good start.  I look forward to seeing how your overnight render does.  There is still all day tomorrow before the contest ends so you might make it.

    And here's what I hope will be the final version. It's different than the first version, but I'm not sure if it's better really... Made some colour adjustments in post work and attaching that version (the more greenish one) too.
