Maybe they're depressed because of the long bodies? Perhaps long bodies cause long faces.

Let's not turn this into another general bash Genesis 9 thread, please.

I get a variety of (fairly subtle) moods from those.

I wish the artists would show their characters with a variety of expressions. I've had a real problem with getting both G8.1 and 9 to smile. For some reason the smile morphs tend to distort their lips and I can't get a decent smile on them. I would like to see characters in promos with more than just a blank expression.

Or one gets a smile that scares little children, me included

I can see it on the VO  characters, but the rest are just neutral expressions. Personally I don't want to seeing smiling promos, mainly because in my projects they are rarely smiling since I don't find extreme expressions all that realistic on any figure. As for long figures, that is the beauty of morphs, easy to change

I'm pretty happy with expressions and such in G9.

  • If you could be changed into a bloke at the movement of a slider, would you look really happy? I am a bloke, and looking happy most of the time is beyond me, so when there is the risk being forced to be one due to events beyond your control.. Totally understandable.

I do not really want to see all smiling promos, as that would be unrealistic. I like to see neutral expressions, as that shows the face of the character better so that the Customers knows what they get.

I want to see the teeth, though.

  • Just remember, 3D characters don't show their age in their teeth... ;)

Vo Xiao Xin HD for G9 is depressed because VOOTW isn't going to make her scholar lover, who is described in the G8F version's product description. https://www.daz3d.com/vo-xiao-xin-for-genesis-81-females
  • haha, ok, so I was going to say this is mostly an artistic choice based on the examples you provided, but as I was looking for happier expressions in list of Genesis 9 characters, I realized that there aren't very many! It seems a lot of artists use this same blank expression for their cover image. My guess is that somewhere along the line, it became the trend to use these expressions. Some artists and DOs occasionally have smiling faces in their cover images, but not many! For example, Mousso characters always have that slightly open mouth with a pouty, exhaling expression, but they look exactly the same on the G8 characters. This thread make me look a lot more at what artists are choosing for their character cover images. :)

Cutest happy smiling character in the G9 list: https://www.daz3d.com/gnomely-for-genesis-9

I'll also add that I do love when an artist includes an expressions page in the list of images, but that rarely happens.

btw, nice image @Oso3D! I hadn't noticed this character before, but now I've added her to my wishlist! I love that the artist includes both male and female versions!

Also, mature faces tend to droop, the eyelids either sag over or the back of the eyes become cavelike, the pinch lines above the nose are embedded by like, the collagen is thinning, the cartilage in nose and ears keeps growing so one could be happy or calm while sometimes people misread a sad that isn't present. The thing is one can make changes in the expression. T I choose one of the canned, and then modify with sliders. Got to say also, the vapid smile and that duck mouth you don't see much in the current models. Like other posters said, I want to see the teeth with the face.

I think people avoid the smiles in the pictures because it's hard to do a good one.

As Joker would say, "Why so serious?" Why?; because it's hard to pull off as beautiful a smile as the Joker can pull off.

I suspect that it is more connected to the reason fashion models don't smile on the runway or in print generally. Partially, they don't because it introduces lines and distorts the face, and partially, there is an aversion to what a lot of European people consider the "American grin" which is perceived as vaguely stupid looking (it is said to be one of the easiest ways to spot a tourist).

  • haven't bought her maybe in future will but I liked the main promo for Amelia. As for the others don't think they look depressed it's just a natural look on them and if they were all smiling might look a little creepy especially how some smile expressions look on some characters on all the generations

Someone grinning without a reason is considered suspicious here in the happiest country of the world for six years in a row.

    Oh,this one frightened me...

  • I have a hard time getting good smiles on both G8.1 and G9, but I suspect that some of that is me because I hate what they did to the facial sliders when they changed to be consistent with FACS or whatever ridiculous videogame reason they gave for the change in 8.1. In general all my facial expressions went downhill after that, because I'm not going to go into the pull-the-face-around-with-arrows tool (powerpose? I forget what it's called) or manually adjust XYZ settings on various face muscles, not for a render that's going to be one panel of a twenty-page comic; I don't have that kind of time.

Among other things, this means difficulty getting smiles from 8.1 on, and that includes all four kinds of smiles I need routinely in my stories: the genuine smile, the This Person Is Up To No Good And Cannot Be Trusted evil smile, the absolutely manic smile (which usually means the same thing, in my stuff), and of course the ever-popular I Want To Tear Your Clothes Off smile.

8.1 does have the Eyes Wide slider which, as a rule, allows them to open their eyes wider than 8.0 where you have to pull one set of eyelids up and the other down. No characters, any generation, in my opinion, can have their eyes set easily to open as wide as I want for horrified or absolutely deranged faces. I sometimes need eyes that look like Matari's Helena figure. (Sometimes I actually use a little Helena shape just to get that, but she also changes the face shape and makes the character short, and she doesn't have separate head and body sliders.)

The slider I miss the most from 8.0 and earlier is the one to move the eyebrows closer together in the middle of the forehead, for frowning/worried/concentrating expressions. I forget what it's named. To do that with 8.1 onward you have to go physically drag the eyebrows together and it doesn't do the middle of the forehead quite right usually--there should be some wrinkling.

Yeah, I know, I digress. Sorry.

To make up for that digression, here is a smile which is absolutely untrustworthy, no matter how sincere it looks. Do NOT accept any of her ice cream, kids.

columbine, now I'm all curious about your four kinds of smiles and how you implemented them... If you have an example of each of those on hand and time to put them up, please do share. And no, I will not buy ice cream from this lady, thanks for the warning. wink
