    A lot of packaged expressions come with unatural, exaggeration "smiles". I use the Shaping panel to correct the applied expression. Plump up those overstretched lips by moving up bottom, down for upper, move jaw back to get the lips offf teeth (now under cheeks!), Another thing that conveys  smiling is to tip the head whiich is more natural, unless going for a "mona lisa" style, even so, her head is not straight on. My examples below, Elenor 9, and Aida3. The Eleanor smile has  a an outward openess but there is hesitation nuance. 

     

    Once you get the hang of that these tweaks work for most packaged expressions for most generations

    There was a tv series that showed 'microexpressions" Called "Lie to Me". It's streaming on line again. The micro expression occurs so quickly it's difficult to notice, but my  point is, the show was based upon real research of human expressions. There is the "Facial Action Coding System (Facial Action Coding System - Wikipedia) A ton of info/detail, could help with designing more realistic facial expressions. But, not really necessary to get grins to subtle. This is one of my best "subtle" smiles with Vicky 9

    I tend to have my promo characters with ranges of emotion...because I am proud of the work i put in to make sure they can emote (which isnt always easy for creatures)

    ....exactly.  I have a fairly extensive library of expressions (beyond the standard ones)  and some of smile morphs can look downright hideous or frightening (and this is even on G8).  it's particularly frustrating when crating younger characters as the extra lines make their faces appear older than they should be.  A lot of it has to do with the smile expressions raising the corners of the mouth a bit too extremely as well as the introduction of more prominent smile lines or "nasolabial folds"  I recently picked up Zev0's Expression Smoother which helps a bit. but only for al limited group of expressions.

    Having a devil of a time porting some of my characters to G8 partly because of this and a few other issues (like most G8 females load in with "huge" physiques and bust sizes thatare difficult to reduce, even ones that are in the promos appear to be slender and lithe or have petite physiques). . 

    I remember getting more desirable results with G1/2 and even Gen 4.

    You guys have to tweak both partial head morph and expressions with pose control dials, as well as the shape of their teeth, 'cause they look not good and nearly all the same... Easy Teeth or sculpt.

    ...that is what I spend a good deal of time doing, and it still doesn't always work out 

    Sculpting is out as it requires a tablet and I've pretty much lost all pressure control and sensitivity in my hand.

    I don't know about anyone else, but I don't walk around smiling. In fact, I have a most impressive RBF....lol. Big smiles on Daz characters have ALWAYS looked weird to me in EVERY generation, unless the character creator has created morphs specifically for it (bluejaunte, for instance). I've always found that expressions are better if the dials for them are kept on the low side, because unless someone is extremely surprised, frightened or in deep grief, expressions on real people tend to be more subtle, although I realize some folks want to capture exactly those expressions. In those cases, it's better mixing expressions, poses and even morphs to achieve a realistic outcome.

    well if i was g9 I'd be sad,depressed or angry as well if I was not as popular as my friend g8 , Maybe she need to open a social media account and become one of those influencer to boost her self esteem laugh

    I guess I have to ask the question? Let's say you see a 3d model that you like with an ugly or off putting smile.  How do you decide if the problem is a great product with an bad pose or a bad product with a great pose?

    ah, so how do you know she might not look better with a different smile?  I have that particular product which I think is very high quality and use other expressions?

     A smile is just a morph that you can dial out in most cases. Personally I purchase any character based on the face morph or the skin. Besides, anything you purchase at DAZ can be returned easily if you don't like it.

    I think Bluejaunte does a good job on smiles. 

  • This thread is one of those threads that gets me. The initial images aren't depressed, they're just natural, neutral expressions. Sometimes I think this software or communtiy pushes so hard for "ideals" of appearance like flawless smiling symmetrical faces that realism is lost. I got "pulled up" for images of a fantasy warrior with no sword callouses on their hands, and a dancer with perfect uncalloused feet with no damaged or missing toenails, and they were right, it was a valid complaint about the images I made.

  • it's not quite a cheesy grin, but have you looked at the "Subtle Expession" Line by Censored? There might be something in those that you could use, they come with dials so you don't have to use them at 100% but this was a render I did for the "Subtle Expression Olympia Edition" promos.
