Thanks, @IceDragonArt. @Liana, yeah, there is so much to learn sometimes my brain feels like it's ready to explode at times. :)
So, I've been thinking I'd like to do a couple of cozy mystery type book covers. I've been playing around with a character I came up with based on the Girl 7. Here's my current WIP. I'm still playing around with it. I need to fix the shoes. They are too dark and blend into the ground too much. I like the other color choices but I may have to retexture the outfit. I think it might blend into the background a bit too much for a book cover. I like the postwork style I did. I'm doing a little bit of research to see what kind of fonts go best with cozy mysteries so I haven't done any typography yet.
Cute character. And I think you are right she blends in too much. Maybe and olive green? or a mustard yellow? I don't know if I would go with something too bright. Udemy has a class for 10.99 on creating and using text in photoshop that looks really interesting.
I have to agree everything has an ovepowering strong dark contrast. I like the character and composition, and the hint of an intelligent female sleuth hard and work solving a mystery. What did the render look like before filters?
Thanks for the comments, guys.
@FirstBastion Here's the raw render. It was rendered in Iray using Sketchy:
Check her right knee. Looks like the thing on the wall of the pub is causing an issue. Maybe you can use the geometry editior to remove it.
As for her shoes, you could try putting the texture in the Emissive Color map, color white, temperature 0 and tinker with the luminance. That might make the texture bright enough to preserve the details when you do the postwork.
I tried a few adjustments and then filters on the initial render.
Thanks, L'Adair. I spotted that after the fact. It's a sign on the side of the building and I think Sketchy thought it was part of her leg. Not sure. I might be able to just hide the sign on the surface tab. I'll have to see how @KindredArts set up the materials on that part of the building. I think I might play with all of her textures and change everything up so there is more contrast. I'll play with it some more after I get back from chauffeur duty with the boys tomorrow.
@FirstBastion I like both of those. I think the second one is my favorite. I like how the shoes showed up on the first one better though. Which filters did you use?
I think I definitely need to play with the lighting a little more with the original render. I didn't realize that my postwork would darken it up so much in areas. I just used the lighting that came with Sketchy so there is plenty of things I can do to brighten up the render inside DS before I start any post work on the next go round.
@IceDragonArt I'll have to check out that class and put it on my wishlist for the next time they are having one of their $10 sales.
Hey, did anyone see L'Adairs Mr. Tumnus in the gallery? She did a great job. I love C.S. Lewis! For anyone who doesn't know, Mr. Tumnus was the Faun that Lucy meets first in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when Lucy first steps into Narnia. Has anyone seen the movie? L'Adair's Mr. Tumnus looks just like the portrayal in the movie. Nice job L'Adair. Everyone click on the link and go check out L'Adair's version of Mr. Tumnus. :)
edit: apparently I can't spell the same word five times in a row and get them all right. That last Tumnus was missing an 'n'!
That turned out great! I loved Mr Tumnus in the movie and L'Adairs version. :)
Thank you, Knittingmommy, for the mention, (and link!). It means a lot to me that you like my image, as much as I admire your work. And I used images of James McAvoy's Tumnus as a guide, so it feels really good you recognized him.
Thank you, too, @Liana. I appreciate your comment. (And it looks like you gave the image a thumbs up in the gallery, yes? That last Like sent Mr. Tumnus to the top 40 and the scrolling banner on the first page of the Gallery. Thank you for that.)
yea, i did. :) oh, really? cool!
@Liana Yeah, I love Mr. Tumnus, too. They did a great job with the visuals in that movie. L'Adair got really close to that representation which was really nice.
Congrats, L'Adair. Making it on the banner is a cool thing to happen. I've had that happen a couple of times. I know you've been up there at least one other time before. Enjoy your moment. It was well deserved. :)
Thank you. Mr. Tumnus will be my third image to reach the banner in the three years I've been posting to the galleries. (It took me a while to get up the nerve to put anything in the galleries!) With so many great artists' work in that banner, I'm just delighted to get an image up there once in a while.
KM, I sent you a PM.
@Diomede Thanks for the heads up. I got the PM and responded back.
Thanks, @dracorn. I still plan to fiddle with it a little more. I just haven't had time to render in the past week or so. I've been a little busy. Hopefully, soon.
I just read in the Carrara forum that we have lost a forum member right before Christmas. wgdjohn passed away unexpectedly after complications from his fall last year. I know I will miss seeing him in my thread. He was a frequent visitor to here with lots of helpful tips. He was also a supporter of the It's Raining Men contest. He will be missed.
That is sad news. I didn't "know" him, but I knew he was a big supporter of Carrara and Carrara users. May he rest in peace, and may his family and friends take comfort in their many memories of him.
Still tweaking some things but I thought I'd upload the latest version of my possible cozy mystery cover. I still want to play with the sky more and possibly the lighting some more.
This is very sad news indeed he was so very helpful to a lot of people he will be missed indeed!!
It's really coming along, KM! I like this one the best so far. I can really see her feet now, and her foot pose is adorable! Her personality is really coming through and you did a great job with that. Love the coloring, too. It's vibrant and toony, while still having that slightly dark mystery feeling without treading into horror territory.
Just stopped by your gallery and checked out your stuff there - added some comments and likes.
Thanks, @dracorn. I'm still playing with the lighting a little.
I'm taking a short break because I get to play with @DarwinsMishap's new tattoos. Here's my first test with them. This was straight out of DS, no post on it. I need to render it again. While I like the lighting and my tone mapping, I'm not crazy about the pants and that little light showing in the corner. I'll have to adjust the HDRI. I thought I had it off screen but the little bugger tricked me and I didn't notice in the render.
Those pants are from Alt Style Outfit for Genesis 8 Males. I thought they were going to be different. This is the first pair of pants I've seen that looked better in the workspace than rendered out. I don't know what happened but I'm going to have to play around with them a little to see if I can change those textures. I don't like what I got.
Those are really cool tats - Darwin does great work.
I'm not sure what you don't like about the pants - I think that the dark pants blending into the background with only a few highlights is a really cool effect. It's a striking contrast to the rest of the portrait.
I especially like your rim light in this one.
All I can say is Yum! I have to agree with Dracorn on this one. I like it just the way it is.
The newest iterations of the book cover looks great as well, I do love her feet!
@dracorn Thanks. I do like the overall image and how he kind of pops out of the dark background. Dark pants are definitely what I wanted for this. The texture just seems a little flat to me. I like the pants and how they sit on the hips. The pants just don't seem to catch the lighting in my render like they do on the promos. It might be my lighting and not the texture. I don't know. I'm rendering the front of the pants and they don't seem as flat as the back. I'm not sure why. I might play with the render in Gimp and see what I can do with it. If I can overcome the seemingly flat texture with post I might not need to render again. I like the lighting so I really don't want to change that. And, yeah, I love how the rim light is accentuating his right side and that little bit on his nose and lips is to die for. I'll post again after I've played with him in Gimp.
As for @DarwinsMishap, that man has boucoups of talent. I love his tat work. If I were ever to get brave enough to get a tattoo, it would be one of his designs, hands down.
Okay. A little bit of adjustment in Gimp and this is more like what I was hoping to see with these pants when I started. So, not bad, much closer to what I was trying to get to when I started. I also fixed that little bit of light down in the corn. I did not like having that there. There's not much of a change but I think it really helps the pants.

Edit: added gallery link
@dracorn Yeah, I've been trying to keep in mind the Rule of Thirds. I don't always use it well, though.
So, here's another Test Image of @DarwinsMishap's tattoos. These are on George. I just couldn't resist. :)
One more test render of DM's new tattoo project.
