Build-A-Babe Skin Texture Merchant Resource

In addition to the overlays etc You get the Tan Skin which is a Merchant Resource so if you are thinking of making characters to sell or just want a different skin for your G3 ladies for your own use then you get that to work with.

The actions are as FSMCDesigns describes plus a couple to create quick Bump & Specular Maps

In my case, I will be more likely to use the other resources I already have with this as I can set up all my different bits in groups in my psd instead of having them scattered around my hard drive so when I want to make a change all I need to do is open the texture in PS, place it in the babes PSD & enable the things I want to use on that skin and save.

You could certainly do something similar for yourself but I know I would never get around to doing it without something like this to get me working so for me its a good investment.

@Hinky Punk - Do you have any tutorials or tips on getting lips with lipstick to look better as they are the things I never get to look quite right in PS ?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. But I'm still not sure what the actions do and whether they constitute the main advantage of this tool. Otherwise, what can it do that can't be done in an image editor without the tool?

Ok, there are a few overlays (freckles, etc.) but surely they are not what people would buy it for? Then there's the new diffuse overlay within the IRay settings - doesn't that do a simialr job? As you said - you abandoned LIE and did your own thing in Photoshop. How does this product make that process easier - that's really what I'm not understanding.

Marble, say you want to take textures from a merchants resource into an image editor like photoshop or gimp to create your own textures for a character. You then add the other textures over your main texture to add freckles, moles, makeups, etc. Actions are kinda like presets for different effects with the layers to change the look of the textures. Basically these actions are done to save you the trial and error of figuring out what works best for you. Doing your own thing in photoshop involves some trial and error on what works and what doesn't. Esentially this is supposed to make that a bit easier.

Unless a person is interested in creating a commercial character or editing existing textures for their own use, this product probably won't be useful for you.

I already do something similar, but always welcome more resources; so am considering buying.

I don't create anything commercial, I just enjoy tweaking those I buy; I rarely use any figure completely untouched.

What specifically Lou? Do you have the infamous "floating lip" problem? Are you using merchant resources?

  • TottallouTottallou Posts: 555

I have used merchant resouces, lie images, my own attempts a creating lip textures & the lipstick versions always seem super harsh & like the colour is not really part of the lips :( - Masking & feathering sometimes improves it  - I am sure its my bad PS work & lack of patience that causes it - :)

  • marblemarble Posts: 7,498

OK - I think I misunderstood the main purpose because I imagined it to be like one of the LIE products with the difference being using PS Layers instead of LIE.

    Thanks again for explaining,

Feathering is a necessity on lips. Lipstick is not exceptionaly easy to accomplish because resources generally use 100% of the visible image of the lip on 100% of the lip in the texture, when in actuality the texture will cover more lip than what you have in the photograph. Does that make sense?

Thank you - Now I am sure that feathering is on the right track I will be more patient with the lips & give it a proper try later. Hopefully its a case of it getting easier with practice & with the buildababe I can keep everything where I can find it smiley

All of these skins were made with using Build-A-Babe.

Thank you for the renders and the YouTube video. And thank you, Tottallou, for your renders. It is easier for me to see what is possible with this product.

I did some checking on picking up an older version of PS and it might be a possibility.  I'm wondering since this seems to work in CS2 (I believe that's what Hinky Punk said he or she was using) does that mean the actions would also possibly work in Elements?

It's $20 worth of organization if nothing else (and there is quite a bit "else"), I don't do anything commercially but I am constantly altering skins for my own use in Photoshop.  A couple of things here had me smacking my head and going "now why didn't I think of that".  This is a really useful tool for Photoshop users.

(Put me down for the "Build a hunk" version too)

I saw this first thing on the morning that it was released and thought 'I'll probably buy that later'. Then I noticed that it was made by the creator of John Crowe, my very favourite Daz Studio guy, and it suddenly became an instant buy. I so wish he was real and lived next door. Build A Bloke? Yes, please! :)

I've had very little chance to do anything with Build A Babe yet as it's been a busy weekend here, but this is GF3, morphed a bit, re-surfaced and now known as 'Julia Peculiar'. She took about twenty minutes to cobble together and most of that involved putting the new maps in the right places, but I don't think she's that bad for a first attempt. I'll be using this product a lot. Her eyeballs use a Filter Forge texture, but all her other surfaces are from Build A Babe. I quite like her Build A Babe eyebrows, and they do at least go with her hair. She just desperately needs a Build A Bloke now to keep her company.

She looks great :) Not bad for a first attempt at all, and it will only get easier!

I wish John was real too.. A girl can dream!

Yup I'm using CS2... I don't know anything about Elements though. I wish I could answer this question. Old versions of Photoshop are very easily obtainable though

I wish sets like this would come with normal maps... I have CS5 still, but had a trial of PS CC15 that ran out and you can make normal maps there, but CS5 works fine for everything else, so not sure if I want to spend $10 a month just to make normal maps.  I found a free utility but it's Windows only, and I'm Mac. If normal maps were added to this, it would be great... Although I'm not sure how much they change with each character. Still experimenting with creating my own bump, specular, normal maps etc..., plugging them in and seeing what they do. I'm working on creating my first character right now and have built something similar to this product already in Photoshop, but this seems like a good G3 merchant resource skin and will get when the price goes down... But it would be great if it came with all the maps too!

Honestly, there isnt a great deal of point in supplying bump or spec, let alone normals. They change with EVERY character.  Sure, you could probably repeat normals for torso arms and legs, but the second you change the eyebrows, you're going to have a major problem. Unless you just have bumps and normals that don't show any details that would be character specific, but that defeats the purpose. You may as well not plug them in.

    Try this: https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop

I'm still using CS6 and the Nvidia plug-in works fine. It will show up in the Filters menu drop-down.

ETA: I downloaded and installed the plugin at least a year ago, so I can't vouch for the most recent plugin working with older versions of Photoshop. And one tip: always make the layer a background before applying the filter.

Also, I've used that site, Hinky. Very nice online resource. However, there is a limit as to how large the image can be. I think it's 2500x2500 or 3kx3k... something like that, so I had to resize my image. I always used 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 and those worked just fine.

    Oh. sad I'm sorry.

Maybe it will help some others, though. And you can always use the link Hinky Punk shared. Just remember to size your images below the maximum. Sorry I don't recall exactly what that is. But you'll be safe at 2048x2048.

Will this work with your Skintastic skins?

This will work with every skin you own, not just my resources. I have all of my skins in one PSD which is about 2 gigs, but, I've got a whole lot to work with, and the only delay is the opening of that file. Works perfectly fine once its open.

Gimp has a free plugin that creates normal maps

I'm not a merchant, either. But I've got a lot of Merchant Resources, including this one. There is a lot of flexibility in modifying figures for your renders with the MR. If you like making your gals look different than the defaults, this product will help you do that. There's a lot in here you couldt figure out for yourself, if you are adept in Photoshop. But the amount of time you save skipping the "trial and error" phase for the various layers is well worth every penny for the product. And the 20 eyebrow resources alone, for me, made this a must buy!

    +1 to this -

I attach a couple of copies of new skins I have started since having this & although there is a lot of room for improvement this product made me get started so has been worth every penny  - The first uses the Tan Skin included as a base, the second is a skin I created in Photoshop  then used the basic make up from the product, some MR Lips I already had & some eyebrows I made

I'd def be in for Build a Bloke.  Girls are a dime a dozen and they all kind of look the same after a while with a few exceptions.  I want men and I want them now!!  And yes to man brows too!

Only hitch is, I have Photoshop CS2 which is really old and can't afford to upgrade, so is it a waste of money to want these?
