No spinlock.  I did a complete reinstall of all 4.9.2.7 items.  No difference.  Looks like I won't be able to use DAZ until the fixes they are doing with Public Beta are sorted out and official release.

Hello Gemini23 .Go again to the interface settings and change the the prepixel shading to off.

    Allyour settings are wrong also.

disable the pixel buffer but before put it at the middle at 1k x1k

try this and see how it goes

Hey.  Thanks.  I did a Restore Factory Defaults and tried again.  Yup!  Working now.  Can you tell me what settings I am safe to use in order to optimize things?  I just installed second GPU so I want to be sure that I am able to take advantage of any gains with that.

    Thanks

  • Hi. Good! Second GPU...how you connecting it? via thunderbolt i guess? What mac model you have? .

For best results only change the display optimisation to best  and play with texture recources to see where is the best for you.

Also clear frequently the dson cache at first  tab General as Crissie Galloway from Daz suggesting.

i have a second GPU too in my newer imac but at the moment i dont using it as i stuck at 3d delight renders..

i had some really big problems with my thunderbolt imac and trying to fix them. my old imac i using now cannot put second gpu as does not have thunderbolt and to connevt it via usb or firewire is waste of time...

    Hi all,

I got an IRAY & Mac related question:

    • When I render my current scene in CPU mode
    • The scene itself consists of 5 Genesis3 figures & wardrobes & props. The render time is around 11 hours.
    • Activiy Monitor shows a memory utilization by DAZStudio of ~38 GB. My machine has "only" 16 GB physical memory.
    • I'd like to speed up the rendering time by going to GPU. I will not find a 40GB graphics card... (and if, not payable)

How do I have to dimension the GPU? Any advise? Or just try to go to 32 or 64 GB memory (not sure if this is feasible on the 10 year old machine) ?

    Thanks & best regards,

    Peter

    Hello,

38GB is the full usage of DS, both the internal data structures, texturemaps and mesh data plus what Iray needs to render this using CPU. But as soon as you exceed your physical RAM, the machine will go bu the speed of the disk and not the speed of the RAM, which is gazillion times slower. But, depending on many things ilke internal memory handling of DS and Iray you might not suffer 100% from swapping as if what is needed is kept in RAM and other parts are swapped or compressed, you can still have some speed, but yes, memory upgrade is my first recommendation. What machine are you using? I have an old MacPro-2006 which can't go past 8GB as the mother board wiring and on board memory controller says no, but that machine is 11 years old. My other machines has 32, 48 or 64 GB RAM and works well with DS. One have a 6GB nVidia card and I can fit much into that, but 5 figures is a lot to handle, specially if you allow 4k texture maps. Texture is what eats Iray memory the most.

    Hi Totte,

I'm using a 2006 MacPro 1,1 with some customizations (e.g. FW patch to 2,1 and upgraded CPUs). I'm pretty certein that it supports more than 8 GB memory. I'm using 4x 2 GB DIMMs per riser card. Theoretically I could replace them with 4 GB DIMMs to go to an unofficially supported level of 32 GB.

But... not really sure if it's still justified to invest even a small amount of money into this dying machine.

So 6 GB GPU as a minimum? Ok. I'm that's a direction to head. But not sure if I've to switch to Windows...

    thanks and best regards,

    Peter

You can but you need real RAM DIMMS with termo on or you fans will go crazy. OWC has a 32 GB set but it's expensive, $250.
There might be an issue fitting a modern nVidia card into that machine as newer nVidia drivers will require OS X beyond 10.6 (what is supported on that machine).

I know some people have upgraded the CPUs, on that machine it's really tricky (my son did it on a newer machine, bought CPU on ebay from a slaughtered server farm).

    Good luck with experimenting.

Uezi, I'm using a 2010 Mac Pro Quad Core, RAM 32 GB, graphics ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB ad Mac OS Sierra

    This should work fine, but...

Since I updated to 4.9 Daz doesn't see anymore the GPU,  so I can't use 3Dlight or Iray for renders (only CPU, with Open Gl, but it's not enough performing as graphic engine for my needs). Does Daz see your Gpu? If you're still on 4.8 I suggest to be very careful about updating

Since I cant't afford buying a new mac I really need to go back to 4.8, but unluckily I don't have the installers (last updates done by DIM and didn't think to make a backup of the app). Is there anybody who can pass me the installer file for version 4.8, Mac 64 bit?

    -  3Delight is not GPU based, it's CPU based.
     - nVidia Iray only works witrh nVidia GPUs, Radeon is ATI/AMD so it has never worked as GPU either. Are you talking about Luxus or Reality, which uses LuxRender for GPU performace?

Actually, since everything with 4.8 worked fine, I went to look at the render preferences (I'm not a pro user, I just make illustrations for my stories) only when I started having problems, and there I saw that Gpu isn't seen (okay, now I now why, thank you Totte!); Iray just makes Daz to crash when I try to render something; with 3Delight I get only a completely black image (just tryed with the bundled ready-to-render "sci-fi warrior scene").

No, I never used other render engines, just gone with Daz's included ones

3Delight will reqiure lights (Iray uses skydome/sun sky). Throw in an Uber Environment 2 and you will be happy.

Basically there are two render engines (if you skip Open GL which is a fast low quailty render engine substitute), 3Delight and Iray. They work very different (and have different pros and cons.) 3Delight handles some thing much better while Irayb does other things better. Iray is a physically based unbiased render engine silumation the real world while 3Delight is Renderman Compliant which means it's designed to do things that are physically inpossible (for Hollywood, special effects etc)

If Iray crashes I guess you're running out of RAM.

You think 32 GB aren't enough?

  • RuthvenRuthven Posts: 653

Okay, after adding an Uber Environment 2 light (aniwya, in the scene I'm using there were a couple of spotlights) and trying another render I accidentaly moved the render window and realized Daz was displaying a message error (the other times it must have remained hidden): 3Delight message #45 (severity 2): S2050: cannot find shader ‘defa (the error window isn't big enough to show the rest of the message). It seems Daz has problems on locating the shaders file, I guess. If so, which is the correct path where the shaders file should be? I have my Library on a case-sensitive hd and this brought to a lot of duplicated directories; I'm now coping it to a non-case sensitive drive but it's A LOT of work and is going on slowly.

Depends on several things, like how much RAM is used by other running programs, how large the scene is and if you use displacement on huge areas, all of those things takes toll on the RAM.

The message is most probably shown in the logfile, which you can find under Help->Troubleshooting->View Logfile.I guess it says "Cannott find shader Default "

  • I've been having the weirdest situation on my Mac - running Daz Studio just fine, does what I want it to.

Then I shut it down. It will not properly shut down on its own. I either have to Force Quit it, or wait the several minutes before my Mac says "Oh wait - that's not closing!" I have no issues within the program at all - anything I need to do, it does. Except shut down cleanly. *laugh*

It's been that way since two OS versions before Sierra. (Whatever preceded El Capitan - don't feel like looking it up right now...)

Any ideas on why it does this? I don't mind doing the F.Q., but I shouldn't have to.

That's normal but it has become better with the 4.9 I think. If you inspect the DAZ Studio using Sampler (or sample it from Activity Monitor) you'll see it's dealocating memory. The time depends on how big scenes you had. Letg it sit and it will close, sometimes after 10 minutes. This was 1 hours before, so much improved. The thing is that closing a scene on quit or "new scene" is most probably the same code, and you want it to clean up nicely.

Anyone know about using a eGPU with imacs for rendering?

  • I have noticed Daz Studio will not shutdown for 5-10 minutes if logged into Daz Connect and have to force quit if I don't want to wait that long. If not logged intoDaz Connect Daz Studio will exit immediately.

  • I run 3Delight with 16 GB on some large scenes and have never run out of RAM (no displacement, just 4-5 figures with hair + props + uber environment + spotlights).

I've not seen this - I do get a delay if there was a memopry-intensive scene loaded on shutdown, but Connect has almost no impact.

Agrees with Richard on this, Connect doesn't seem to be an issue, unless your internetconnection dies when Connect is tearing down, but that is not a long lag. Memory deallocation on the other hand, depending on what was in the memory can sometimes take a lot of time.

Interesting news for Mac Users (from 9to5mac)
We have reached out to Nvidia for a statement about compatibility down the line with lesser 10-series cards, and I’m happy to report that Nvidia states that all Pascal-based GPUs will be Mac-enabled via upcoming drivers. This means that you will be able to use a GTX 1080, for instance, on a Mac Pro 2012 system or via an eGPU setup. Exciting times, indeed.

Saw that on MacObserver....still can't find any info on if I can use a eGPU with my iMac though....macrumors and apple forum have been a bust so far for info.

After upgrading from 4.8 to latest 4.9 my Smart Content is empty. No files or products are shown. Selecting a file in the Content Library and choose 'show asset in smart content ...' gives a error saying the product can not be found in smart content. After downgrading to 4.8 smart content works again. Reinstall of 4.9 did not help.

Any ideas? System is OS X 10.11.
