Is it time to start the drum roll?
Sooo... two weeks of voting?
It still looks like many of the people who entered didn't submit their own votes yet.
Clearly they haven't as many have stated that they have no intention of voting.. But I digress.. I'm just moaning about the frustration of having entered a contest three months ago today (that I have little hope of winning anything in) that still hasn't ended.. Like the settlement for my accident 16 months ago, I just want it to be over with so I can move on with my life.

Sorry to hear about your accident my friend. Don't count yourself out so quickly. You submitted fantastic work and the community vote is not necessarily reflective of Stonemason's decision.
Thanks. In the past 10 years I put in 20 years worth of full time work, so I was due for a change of pace. My new job should start tomorrow, and it's a measly 40 hour a week job, so I hope to start taking classes this summer as well.
And I appreciate your appreciation of my art, but it's never been 'mainstream 3D', and as such I'm not surprised when I never win a contest on these boards.. But my autistic nature tends towards O.C.D., hence my stress over the contest.
i would like to sincerely apologize to the community but im not going to vote...
in fact i think this whole community voting is wrong....
the only one who has the ability to judge with objective terms is Stefan alone.
all the others including myself are not objective! I have friends and others have friends that they don't want to let down those friends for voting else's works...
everyone is a winner in this contest since everyone gave his/her 100%...i would hate it if i would be in the difficult position to vote just 8 entries....
it doesn't matter how good or bad everyone is...the point is for encouraging words to be heard because i believe this is what makes people better...
probably there would be people dissagre for what im saying, and probably some of them gave me a vote...
so in order to be fair i quit myself from whatever prize i will or not earn from the community voting...i will let Stefan decide who will take my position if there is any...
sorry for my bad English i hope you understand my point of view, and sorry if i let anyone down with my opinion...
Personally I don't care if anyone votes or doesn't, it is a personal choice and who am I to argue the point..there are more important things in life to worry about than upseting sensitive people. :) Also if you don't want to upset anyone then you shouldn't have entered..simple really when you look at it logically. We all knew that this was coming from the get go.
I entered becasue of the random draw and because it was fun..I don't care if my choices upset anyone..it is all part and parcel of these things.
I can't disagree with what you said, and understand your point of view.
I didn't feel good about voting, and after doing so have thought about removing my votes. But, I can't tell whether I'd do so because I don't like community voting or because I've been in a bad mood for two weeks because my new neighbor gets home in the evening and listens to loud music until well after 2 am.
If you live in the United States there are laws against disturbing the peace... call the police..
Can't you talk to him?
Or get Ohropax, I like the classic ones (don't ask me about the English name ...)

Unless voting is a requirement of entering this contest, then it is a perfectly valid choice to abstain.
Sorry If I upset anyone by not voting. But all the entries were awesome to me and I can't see how I am supposed to narrow it down to 8 I do not envy Stonemason.
I knew upon entry that mine was not going to win for two reason 1) The talent on this board is amazing and 2) I am knew to this type of art and have a lot still to learn.
Some people may ask why I bothered to enter well 1) It was fun 2) It pushed me to learn a new technique, 3) it showed me how far I still need to go ,which isn't a bad thing and 4) I was hoping to get some sort of feed back unfortunately the last part didn't happen, now however I know why I didn't ask :-)
Again I apologize if I upset anyone by not voting but "I can no more choose a favorite among the entries, than pick my favorite star from the heavens"
I must confess that I was all for abstaining too, until I saw how few votes there actually are.
The funny thing is that I do genuinely rate my own entries, but I would've looked a right jackass putting my own second entry as my top choice
:red:
...and Stefan's made his choice, and the winner will get his/her prize. But there is also the community's "choice", so why does it have to be objective? I've seen many talk about agonizing over criteria for selecting their favorite images, but the very definition of "favorite" is subjective, not objective. I didn't take a lot of time choosing, I just picked the images that really spoke to me, or jumped out in some way.
And that's just my opinion, I'm not saying anyone else's opinion is any less valid. Opinions are also subjective. :)
The two images I posted to this contest were the first two images I had worked to completion, the first two images i did in Daz, the first times I worked with a set, or lighing beyond the basic Key/ Fill/ Back . . . the second image in particular become quite the labor of love.
But posting these images felt like sending my kid out into the world . . . at some point you have to let it go and let it be what it is. Because of the work involved and my own sense of accomplishment and investment in the picture, I wanted to see it do well. But I also had to realize that there is no equation between the two. In other words, whatever the picture meant to me personally, or whatever I thought of it's composition, quality, or story, I rapidly had to separate out from the community response. This is not to say constructive critisism isn't welcome. It is to say that the realization that my personal investment in the project, what it meant to me, had very little to do with it's performance in the contest.
. . . a good lesson, albiet an unexpected one.
It's that heavy pounding bass that's the biggest problem. I don't actually hear the music unless I'm out in the hallway. I talked to management about it again today. Turns out, I'm not the only one complaining. The neighbor on the other side of her apartment is also complaining. She is now in violation of her lease since she's been warned more than once about it and hasn't stopped.
I'd rather have the property manager deal with it rather than calling the police. Here in Philly, I'd rather the police be able to focus on dealing with break ins, murders, drugs, and theft. I'd hate to have someone die because the police were responding to a noise complaint I called in! (I'd feel different about it if I didn't have a property manager to intercede.)
I understand where you're coming from, but as of today there have only been 75 Homicides in the city of Philadelphia, down 40% from this time last year while the city employs 6,646 Police Officers.. I'm pretty sure they can spare a couple of Peace Officers to investigate disturbance of the peace complaints. Unless you evade taxes, it's what you pay them for. Getting evicted for being inconsiderate of the neighbors builds a chip on the shoulder, being ticketed and or facing jail is a wake-up call.. This person lives in a civilization and needs to be taught how to be civil.
If someone expects you to vote for them just because they are your friend and get upset if you don't, they aren't a very good friend in my opinion.

Just noticed this message thread (and wish I noticed it sooner)... I wondered what happened to the conversation that had been going on in the main voting thread.
I am no expert in any of this and would never claim to be. But I think I might have a somewhat different POV on artistic contests. Initially I wanted to say "unique" view, but that sounded way too pompous. Which isn't really my intention.
I use to help put on an annual anime convention in Orlando. Part of my duties were to administrate the AMV Contest. To participate in the contest the "editors" would take a song and a Japanese animation and put them together to make a music video.
While setting up the contest I tried to think of every contingency to try to keep the playing field level. But it was virtually impossible to anticipate all of the factors that went on.
The first time around I expected some of the participants to try and take advantage of the rules. What I didn't expect was the voters and the judges to also take advantage of them. Even other officials for the convention would sabotage things.
Then there was dealing with the participants different levels of expertise. There was no easy way to keep novices from feeling discouraged when the voters savaged them.
The audience would also take up a "mob mentality." Screaming out things that they would probably never say directly to anyone.
I think I administered the contest for three years before I finally gave up. Every year I tried to learn from the previous one and anticipate more. But I still found myself caught off guard on a regular basis.
The only thing I came away with was that contests judged for artistic merit and inherently flawed. And there isn't much that anyone can do to fix them. You just have to go in with a light heart and not take it too seriously. Or take the results too personally.
That being said, this has been one of the most well mannered contests that I have experienced. I really wasn't expecting anything truly nasty, since by and large most people on this forum are a cut above the majority of internet forums.
I know trying to pick my choices was extremely difficult. I tried everything I could to do it blindly and not over think it. I tried to let each picture stand on its own merits. Just narrowing the field down was hours of work.
This contest was rewarding for me because it showcased the creativity and talent of the entrants. I liked looking at all the images, and learned from them. I wouldn't expect to win anything with my submissions(especially since I liked about 50 other images better!) but I entered because it is contributing to the community, it made me do my best in coming up with an idea and executing it, and there was a small chance of winning the random weekly pick.
I believe that the eventual winners will win because they appealed to a broader audience, not that they are necessarily "better" art. Isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder?
I guess this is why I originally said the voting should not be an open community process. I truly believe that the only fair way to have achieved a good community pick was to Only allow those that entered the contest to vote and to not allow anyone to vote for themselves.
It is a shame that so many people have decided not to vote for the simple fact that it would have been nice to know which pieces they truly thought were the top picks. I feel that community voting, when done right can definitely help everyone increase their own skills.
For example, as an artist that is already critical of my own work, if everyone picked fantasy art pieces and I was always only doing sci-fi, maybe I would start trying to do those types of pieces to expand my own creative horizons and level the playing field.
Anyone upset about losing needs to stop competing then. I have lost nearly every challenge I have entered but it just motivates me to keep refining my skills and challenges me to learn new techniques. When I see some of the images that were in this contest, it makes me want to learn how they were made. What post work techniques should I try next time? What story do I want my art to tell? Could I improve my composition?
I do agree with one statement that has been repeated though...everyone that competed should consider themselves a winner!
If someone expects you to vote for them just because they are your friend and get upset if you don't, they aren't a very good friend in my opinion.

we could spent pages and talk over this with no result or any chance to see my points....
so i will not argue with you....
i will respect your opinion please respect mine and don't be offensive...
if i wanted a poll with options: whos agree with me and who doesn't i would have put one in Deviant art.
...I've one one challenge here ever, an RRRR challenge last year. I placed 2nd in the old PA Wallpaper Challenge back in 2008
I've won the Starving Artist, a holiday challenge, and placed in another themed challenge over on on the Fantasy Attic site.
I've been at this for something like five years now.
While it is always disappointing to lose especially when you put a lot of work into a scene, that is the way it often goes. there are only so many that can be selected, so one moves on and tries better the next time or gives up submitting.
I wanted to enter this however, at the time, I didn't have a system that could render the idea I had without crashing. I am not all that good at postwork or compositing so it had to pretty much be a direct render. So I had to be satisfied with being a spectator once again.
There were a lot of excellent works in this challenge and I don't envy Stefan for having to chose which ones win and which ones don't.
As to the community vote, I feel the number of submissions is rather overwhelming for many, For people such as myself who have poor connectivity it is that much more daunting as it requires a huge time investment waiting for page loads and dealing with timeout/reset errors.
got playing around and used modular ruins ......
Sorry guys...I have been buried in work.
Have there been results on the official contest yet? (not the community vote)
the results are.... we are still waiting
the results are.... we are still waiting
Ok..thanx
Thought I missed them when I couldnt see his thread anymore
The original thread was set loose and the Community vote thread was put up in it's place.
