I wore a tank top under my chef coat today.  My nice new coat barely kept me warm because I was not wearing appropriate shirt for weather.

hacsart that's incredible those temperatures. Can you even go outside when it's -30 or -40 F?

The real trick is to cover any exposed skin against the wind. I’ve got a good down parka thats warm to -35C or so, fur ushanka that’s quite a warm hat, plus good gloves, scarves, etc.. layering is your friend. We have walked over to Mass in -30C weather..  this type of weather is not unusual for here.. we get these cold snaps that last a week or something, then a Chinook will roll through and warm things up.. car trunk  has  shovel, emergency kit and spare hat and gloves.. winter tires go on in October...

still, best option is staying in..

  • In Arkansas. Supposed to be in single digits/teens by New Year's Day. Maybe snow.

Mid to high 50s here during the day. Nothing leather and a windshield won't cure.

Wasn't there a song about falling asleep at the drive-in movies?
    I can't remember,
    my brain's in a blender,
    It's Jello.

I've been outside when it's been cold enough to create a frozen mustache & beard even with a shaved face just by exhaling.

I hear you, we usually have a very cold period in January-February here in Finland. Atm it's only -6C but constantly snowing so pretty cool. And you can go out if you must when it gets down to -30C but my Dalmatian is really suffering, trying to keep all feet off the ground at once, not a pretty sight:) And the car doesn't like it much either. Takes some time to get engine temps up so you can try to start it.

Here in Canada where I live it has been -40c to -45c for like the last week except for tonight which is thankfully only -33c, and the heater in the apartment hasn't been working properly. Just to give an example. My CPU idles at about 45c at normal room temperature. It's been idling at 20-25c. So, it's been pretty cold inside! Dressing in layers and wearing a winter coat has been helping! Hopefully, the people who run the building will get the heater fixed soon though. There isn't even any heat at all coming out of the vents outside the apartment suite.

Oh man that must be painful! I don't think we've had those kinds of temps over here for about 10 years so we've been lucky. Hope they get the heater fixed asap!

Saskatchewan, Northern Ontario or the NWT, I'd wager.. Frozen pipes are a worry, then?

    Sven Dullah:
Yeah, it's not fun, but I still like it over scorching heat in the summers. It's just worst now because of the whole heater thing and having to be in a colder environment whenever I'm at home. Thanks, I hope they get it fixed soon too. I notified the caretaker about 2 days ago, she lives in the building opposite of me.

    hacart:
Im not too concerned about frozen pipes because there is still a bit of heat coming in, just not enough. However, im not sure how much it will affect the pipes having no heat outside the apartment suite. Basically, it's like little heat inside the suite, and then nothing at all outside the suite. Once you walk outside your suite, the building is like outside weather without the wind chill.

DAZ forums showing their geo-centric bias again. It's 29C here (84F), the kids are in the pool and it will be 36C tomorrow (97F).

...37° here.  Cold for our standards.

Yeah I grew up in Wisconsin, lived in the northern part of the state for several years, weathered the winter of '76/'77 when in Milwaukee it didn't get above 0° (F) for nearly two weeks and we had a low one night in Madison of -41°. Been in the Pacific Northwet for almost four decades and became acclimated to relatively mild temps this time of year compared to back in the Midwest.  When it does get cold here, the downside is most heating here is electric which is terribly inefficient and runs up the utility bill like a rocket after liftoff, whereas back in Wisconsin gas heat is more common which warms a volume of air much more efficiently.  Also, good insulation in many structures here is almost an afterthought.

Don't worry, I feel for you.  It's almost 9pm and it's just dropped down to 29c and our aircon's broken.  Ever tried to get a repairman over the christmas period, who won't charge like a wounded bull?

It's not just that. We are all a bit ethno-cenrtic. I thought I lived in a modern house with all mod cons here... until I saw this.... now I feel feel like a caveman bashing rocks together.. And how articulate and cute is Aiko BTW?

Apparently for the US the worst is yet to come. Going into this weekend and next week a huge arctic blast will cover maybe 2/3 of the US according to a CNN map I just saw, and should last most of next week. They're saying record lows in a lot of places. I always assumed these super cold temps would only last a day or two from a quick cold snap, but this seems to be hanging around for a while. Seems like the only ones escaping it will be the West Coast, south Texas and South Florida.

Well, we made it down to 8F and then some.  This morning at 8:00, radio said -2F but on my porch it was a balmy +2F cool  That makes up for the tropical heat wave of 12F yesterday.

Yeah, they're saying Dallas is going to drop below freezing and not get back up till around tuesday last I heard.  It's unusual for us to stay below freezing for more than about 36 hours.  Even our bad winters we usually have a few days that we stay right around frezing and only dip down below it at night.  They were talking temps in the 20s for us though, which we almost never see ones quite that low

  • Woke up to frozen pipes this morning. Took 30 mins with a hairdyer to get flow back. Weh.

I'm curious how pipes can freeze in your house...isn't the house kept pretty warm (at least above 65F or so...)?

The basement is colder, and I have a bathroom where the pipes run close to the side of the house on top of the foundation wall. If I forget to leave the faucet dripping and the cabinet open, the cold water pipe freezes in extreme cold weather. Yesterday, it was about -15.5C/4F where I live. Cold enough that my foundation walls are basically frozen.

A new "PriceRight" Grocer just opened in the Mall
that is literally across the street from my Apartment building.
So even when I have to re-supply it is a short trip.

  • It's pouring rain and 2C outside today.  If the temperature drops even just one degree, it'll be ugly out there.  We don't cope with snow very well here on the Canadian Wet Coast.

After that nice mild fall (here in NY), it was a given that payback would be uhmmmm....a *itch. It is winter, after all.  I'm just recovering from having the flu during the week of Christmas and I'm not sure that being out in the cold is doing me any good.  My poor bus mates had to put up with my never ending cough attacks.

  • The coolest here at the moment is 30c (86f) at 5 am. Recent day temp has been 43.6c (110f). Today’s forecast is 41c (105f).

Happy New Year From Outback Australia!
