Back in the early '80s I was on a SCUBA trip in northern Florida (near Gainsville).  Diving in one of the numerous springs in the area.  We camped at dive area, did a couple dives the first day in beautiful weather (mid 70sF), hung our wetsuits on a clothesline between a couple of palm trees and retired to our tents for the night.  We woke up the next morning with 2 inches of snow on the ground, huge spiderwebs coated in frozen dew, and our websuits were frozen stiff.  We lifted our surfboard-like wetsuits off the line and carried them down to the spring pond where the water temperature is always 72F to thaw them out before doing our morning dive.  We dove into the caverns at the bottom of the spring, had a great time and when we came up we popped our heads out into a snowstorm and bobbed on the surface for a while and the snow piled on our heads.  We all laughed when we realized we looked like those Japanese Snow Monkeys that winter near the hot pools. smiley

SixDs.. yeah frozen pipes are a pain,, Our building is hot water heated . I think we have 24 Million Btus worth of boilers in the mechanical room.. hooked up to some automation, as the temp dips below -10C, the boilers start ramping up their set points, depending on how CD it is outside ...also at -10c, we have a freeze protection feature that dumps full heat into the pipes once an hour for a minute. As the temp drops, that minute gets increased...

its currently -27c, with a windchill of -38C. We plan on staying in..our  place is cozy at 24.4C ...

Yeah, and CNN is saying that it's so cold in the Boston area that sharks are washing ashore on the beach, dead because of the cold.

Aye, something like that.     Makes it seem positively balmy this side of the pond.

Sounds like the end of next week is gonna be the worst. HIgh of 13F, low of 6F, and 25mph winds in NYC. Ouch.

  • Wind chill temps in the single digits here in North Carolina. No going to the New Years fireworks for me.

Currently -26c... but should be rising to -6c tomorrow - perhaps the cold snap is at an end finally,

    Snow again in South Texas.

hacsart I just realized your -26C is only -15F. Oh, I thought it was cold there. That's almost tropical. And -6C tomorrow is about the same as the high in NYC...about 21F. Shorts weather.

Brrrr..., that's about -15F  rising to a tropical -3Fsurprise tomorrow.

  • This time of year where I live, it should barely be getting above freezing during the day. It's barely getting below freezing at night.

Well. worst bit was the windchills that were in the -40-45C range. an  hour south of us had temps to -40C sans windchill, windchill to the -50 range. We had a pocket of warmer air around the city.. Coldest I have personally seem was - 44C (-47F) in  Jasper in 1996

Well, if Niagra Falls freezes over, and if it snows in Florida, then I predict a very cold, cold winter.  Wait a minute....dang.

I saw something today that they're predicting that the second half of January will be (well, something like 60% chance it will be) unseasonably warm in the eastern US.
