So, backstory on this character, is that she's from a comic I abandoned about five years ago.

The original version of the character was made with Genesis 1 morphs. This verison with Genesis 2. Yet I somehow managed to recreate her look from memory.

Like the "Runner" pic I posted earlier, this is done with PWtoon + a UE light. The background is stock photo that I did a faded blur effect on.

Very cool. I normally don't like the contrast between cartoon figures and photo backgrounds, but in this case it works. I like the outlines on the body and clothes, although the hair looks a little soft in comparison to the other outlines. Nice job!

Haven't done anything that fit the thread in a while. I was working on this back in January or February originally, but other things distracted me and I kind of lost my train of thought on this. I haven't completely finished this, it is supposed to be a series of panels as an exercise in page layouts, but I haven't had enough motivation. I liked the direction it was going though, so hoping that after sitting with these for a while I will get back into it. Still working on getting a good balance of clean, thin lines on architecture, but it's getting better.

Looks good. PWToon is right in that sweet spot, in terms of versatility and user friendlyness. I've gotten my money's worth out of it a hundred times over, at least.

Looking forward to see more of this one! Awesome work!

Love the Noir atmosphere in this. PWtoon has its great advantages for easier rendering and cool effects, as vrba79 has said.

You have definitely accomplished more with this than I was able to! Very nice WIP. You're having the same problem I had, which is the difficulty in getting crisp, printable lines in the shadows.

Regarding the composition, I would suggest that you try a tilted angle or lower POV – that would give it more of a "noir" feel and enhance the drama. BTW: I don't know if you have cable TV, but Turner Classic Movies  has a programming block (usually late at night) called Noir Alley, and it shows lots of great, classic noir films. I use that for inspiration regarding camera angles and getting the "noir vibe" into my own work.

    • I decided to go with color for a change! Definitely requires a different approach to the art. As you can see, I'm going for an old fashioned art nouveau look, so I'm sticking with solid colors (no gradients or feathered fills).
    • This illustration was created in Poser using my standard rendering technique. Likewise, touch-up, editing and colors were done in a combination of Photoshop and Manga Studio 5EX (aka Clip Studio Paint).
    • The finished illustration will be a frame for a table of contents in a small press magazine.
    • Any thoughts on the colors for the text letters? I'm not really happy with this, so suggestions are appreciated.

Some renders with the new Graphic Novel Shaders and Lights product:

I think this product is a lot of fun! I'm looking forward to rendering with it some more once I finish up and submit the current product I'm working on. I'll have a bit more time to render "for fun". :)

    Hey folks, how the Summer?

I made some good money and cash selling physical copies of my first comic book, Journey to Aaru. Its a story set in a grim future, where 2 Egyptian Techies guide a mysterous android to his "afterlife." Its a story of consequences, the pursuit of dreams, artifical intelligence, and most importantly, the human heart. The story is broken down to 13 chapters, mixed with Traditional, digital, and a now miminal use of Daz3d for environments and props. With the funding, feedback, and praises of the comic, I will continue on until the story is finish.

Here are 4 major characters, one more on the way!

    Looks great.

Very nice work. Their costumes are very striking. I would suggest that you do a render of each without his head gear so that you can make sure their features are sufficiently different. It appears the blond elf's head is narrower than the other guy's but maybe it should be a little more narrow so that there is a stronger differentiation between the two? I'm just thinking out loud -- I definitely like what you've done here and am looking forward to seeing more from you.

I'm on my phone so don't have this up where I can sample some colors myself, but looking at the colors you have and thinking of art nouveau posters, I was thinking to try a mint, lilac, or even a darker, less saturated slate blue color to see how it contrasts with the page. Will take another look tonight to see what I think of those then...
  • AlmightyQUESTAlmightyQUEST Posts: 2,005

For the text, I tried a couple of things on my own, I had a mint that I liked the contrast against the floral designs, but it clashed a bit with the green dress. I also tried a more saturated copper color but that was just ok. Two that I did like were a lilac (somewhere around 26, 56, 0, 0 cmyk), which was a nice contrast, and a slate blue around 69,55,34,11 but was actually quite close to the color in the border once I looked back at it. Maybe you could even try the border color and see if it doesn't look too "flat" by tying it together too much?

Overall I like the composition and the color on this, reminds me of Mucha. And from having gone through your tutorial, I can see similarities in the way the colors are constructed here, which is cool to see how those principles can be applied to other styles.

This is my first attempt at using the techniques from my tutorial with full color. Before I have only tried one or two tones. I can definitely see how my noir style can adapt to this, but it is a lot more work!

Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful ideas. I also think it's cool that we both had the same idea of using the border's blue for the lettering. I wound up doing a variation on that and dropped the blue from the "CCN #122" because it did look kind of flat. Here are some more variations to consider.

    1. Blue

    2. Mint 1

    3. Mint 2 (speckled)

    4. Purple

    5. Yellow (speckled)

Based on the variations, think I personally like the blue best (only adds one "new" color with the yellow, but enough contrast to be easy to read and a good base for the fairy), and then the purple, because I always like the green and purple color combination. The two tone effect is cool though.

Blew the dust off of PWToon, because I haven't used it since I got the new computer, and decided to make a little something. One of my online friends uses the "Zombies, Run!" app. Its kind of an excercise buddy, that augments your daily run/jog with an interactive zombie apocalypse story. So this is kinda based off the stuff she's posted to me about it.

I like this and the others you posted, I always did like PWToon, and the blend with the background on this and the photo example work really well!

Congratulations on the success of the comic! And very nice character studies, thanks for sharing! They have a good, consistent feel across all of them, and a lot of character.

Piddling around with Genesis 1 again, with some Genesis 2 clothes and hair. G1 is your best bet for Anime guys, IMHO.

Ran it and the stock photograph background through one of my custom Photoshop actions. Tried blurring the BG to do a fake DoF thing first. Didn't quite work out as well as I'd hoped.

For some reason, I can't see the pics.  I'm interested in examples using that product,  I'll have to check again with another computer,

Thanks. I like that version for that reason, too (however, the yellow actually is present, although in a tiny quantity -- it's inside the flowers to the right).

I'm actually leaning toward one of the two-tone "speckled" versions. I think it gives some interest to the lettering. However, tonight I'm going to try whipping up one more with the blue to see how it looks.

I like the simplicity of the colors, and the expression is good. The hair looks a little funny to me, though, as though it has been rotated too far forward on the head. That little "patch" from where our hair radiates is usually on top of the thead, not that far forward. To me, that just seems a bit odd. I like the simple outfit, though. It's got a nice, clean look to it.

These are interesting effects, but the first silver one really clutters up the face to the point where it looks unattractive (at least to me). These look like they could be useful in a sort of sci-fi or dream situation. VERY interested to see what else you do with them.

The most challeging part of this inage was adding the wave breaks on the legs and hand in post-work.  I think it turned out ok if you don't look at it too closely LOL.
