...that's pretty cool (not the bike crash though).

Below are the street I lived on, the house I grew up in and where the old neighbourhood schoolyard used to be.

Gone are most of the magnificent towering elms (Dutch Elm Disease did them all in) that lined the street on both sides that formed a canopy of leaves during the summer which provided welcome shade on hot humid days.

The house has seen quite a few changes originally there were three windows where the picture window now is and the front porch has been redone. There used to be a huge maple (there was also one in the back yard as well) and a flower bed with a spruce tree.where the small tree to the right is The grey house on the left is where one of my best mates "Ziggy" used to live.

The third picture is from the alleyway shows the extension (built by my grandad) where my brothers' and my room was.

The old school yard (I went there for my first two years before being transferred to the school run by our church) is now an apartment complex, the school, a classic old red brick structure, having been closed and raised in 1992.

I go drive around my old neighborhood every now and then, and gaze at the changes. There are buildings where there used to be nothing, or trees and bushes and nature. There are condos along the cliff (I call it a cliff anyway) on the shore of the bay where there used to be railroad tracks. It must have been quite an effort to clear out the rats that lived along that cliff. I used to go down there with my best friend and we'd cross the tracks and go down the cliff...lots of big boulders and stuff...and there would be junk that people dumped there. Big junk! Ranges, refrigerators, paint cans. One day we were bored, went down there, found some paint and brushes and painted a refrigerator...just for something to do. You could stand on the boulders, pick up a fist-sized rock, toss it into the boulders and see the rats scatter. I wonder if the people buying those condos know about that. I was just looking at the Google satellite map of the area. It's hard to see that it's a cliff. It was a really tall cliff, and it wasn't straight down, but it was a cliff. A rocky cliff. It seems they've built up the ground to the edge and there are boats there, but you can see some of the rocks down the "hill", but from the air view it's hard to tell that it's down. I can't believe they did that. Someone made a lot of money on that project.

Here's the marina where the cliffs used to lead to just the bay. You can see some of the rocks along the cliff. There were a little more I think. The next one shows what's left of the railroad tracks. There used to be four or five sets of rails at least.

The last one shows where some of the stuff used to be. There were, as I said, at least four or five sets of rails. I didn't draw to scale, I'm sure, and didn't complete the tracks. The pile of stone was that gray stone that lined the ground around the rails. I think maybe there were also beams laying there for track repair, and perhaps some pieces of rail, and of course the spikes. Sometimes we'd climb that pile of stone. Not the coal, though. I'd never hear the end of it from mom. You had to be careful not to get track grease on your sneakers, too.

    I am astounded
apparently after being put on a six day roster against my will working 5 nights a week any of those 6 days with only 48 hours notice needed as which is my day off
they can and ARE rostering us all off next week on a public holiday
ok I WILL get paid six days for 4 nights work instead of 5 days for 3 nights but I have to work an extra day so they do not pay me double time on the public holiday.

Years ago, when I worked in the shipping room of garment factories (two different ones), we'd often have the holiday week off...without pay except for Christmas itself, and New Years day. We'd also have a slow season...most people call it summertime. We'd have to call to see if there was work for the day...or they'd call us and tell us to stay home. Often, we'd go in and there would be almost nothing to do. Sometimes they kept us there, and we'd hide in the stock int he back and play cards. Other times, we'd package all the orders there were, and go home at lunch time. We'd actually enjoy and look forward to it, to get out of the hot mill building. Even with those huge windows open, it was still way too hot in those buildings. We, of course, would end up going to open our unemployment claims to get some money for the time not worked. Most of the summer we'd only work one or two days a week.

So, you should count yourself lucky that you get paid for that week. :-)

...after seeing what houses cost back where I grew up compared to here, rent's are probably more affordable as well there. As I recall there is also a renter's credit I was able to claim on my state income tax.

Not the sunniest or warmest place to retire to but certainly a lot more affordable than here or any of the sun belt areas. Unemployment is a bit lower, however Milwaukee's transit system has taken a real beating during the past recession. Madison's is better off however the only major employers there are the State and the University.

Careful with those "work from home" jobs. Some referrals I have received make them sound like your classic "Get Rich Quick" scheme.

I hear you about the lack of spreadsheet & database positions. That is the bulk of my experience as well.

These days they also want you to be the receptionist (ha, fat chance there), multiline phone operator, meeting arranger, event planner, company travel agent, payroll clerk, presentation coordinator (using the one MS programme I don't know), HR assistant, office supply manager, cleanup, and occasionally even delivery/mail person (requiring a drivers licence and car).

On top of all that, I've seen a number of office schlep positions not just requiring a two year certificate/AA or so many years experience (the latter which I have), but a full four year degree.

It's getting out of hand. Wouldn't be surprised if you'll need a degree to work the line at MickyD's someday soon.

there's an enterprise car rental near the bus stop. checked their website, need a 4year degree to work there.

if i hunker down 2014 and concentrate on saving, i could prolly make my semi-retirement move next december.
my new content allowance will be 29 dineros a month, pc fee would come out of that.
no taxi unless the weather is treacherous.

...seems like you'd be doing a lot of stakeouts. Not the safest sounding occupation, especially as they want you to use your car with your plates instead of one of their vehicles.

...hmmm "Military Background is a Plus...". Seems like they expect you to get into confrontations. No thanks.
