BTW gift cards are working, although I had to type in gift-card after the daz address to get to it. Wouldn't come up in the store search.

I got the confirmation for the order AND the gift card email immediately. However, when I clicked on the email link to redeem, it wouldn't populate the text field on the redeem page. Had to copy/paste. BUT the gift card email DID come right away, as did the order email. Had been waiting 10 or more hours on some of those. So small progress.

@memcneil70  I BLAME YOU.  I wasn't going to get it until you posted that price.  cheeky

I lost Corel Photo Paint when my computer bugged out with that printer drive installation. How on earth do you get new fonts into Photoshop? I did the Character pane like some of the web searches suggested, but I don't see a way to get these fonts in use. I already have them extracted and installed of course. Help!

I have never had to do anything special to view the fonts in Photoshop.  In fact, I don't even have all of my fonts installed.  Instead, I use Nexus font and am able to use any font in a folder, without every installing it.

Did anyone check out the price in the cart for the Everyday Motion bundle? I had checked out the animations and laughed, and thought why not? Tried putting it in my cart, with other new items and it went from $22.44 to $10.60! And a free Christmas pack as well. Now, I have to figure out how to use them. I have never attempted any of the animation products, even though I own them.

Just curious, what did you buy?  I am not really impressed with filament and also tend to hold off when Daz does an updated version.  I think I completely skipped 11 and only gave in to updating to 12 because of the new furry animal products that I wasn't able to use.  Having so little time to invest in learning new features, I hate installing an update and finding out, what I knew worked and how to make it happen, is somehow changed.  Although, I will have to buckle down and spend more time reading in the forums to find if the animation changes are worth downloading the update.

Well, of COURSE this is just fitting, to go along with everything else today (losing all bookmarks, all apps and having to reinstall, and the printer STILL doesn't work after I installed that driver which jammed up my computer. GRRRRR)   Anyway, I've never had this happen- I am using Forest Glade as a background, and even though everything is open in Scene (eyes open) there is a huge bald section running all across the ground, like the grass wasn't there. IMay be instances, but they should show.

It shows in the viewport, and should be there. What can cause that?

@Novica, check your Render Settings > Environment > Draw Ground and Render Settings > Environment > Ground Position Mode. If the Ground Position Mode is set to Manual, ground will be at zero, and if Draw Ground is On at the same time, anything below zero will not be rendered, (in Iray.)

(This has baffled me a time or two, before I realized what was going on.)

    I hope this helps.

I'm liking the look of that "Fire for Filament" product but...am I correct in thinking that this product won't render (or render correctly?) when using the Iray render engine?     And more generally... do products with "filament" in the name NOT WORK in Iray rendering?   There's a "filament information page" up but the single most important thing (to me at least) would be a crystal clear explanation about how "filament"-tagged products do or don't render when using Iray.

I like the talk about near realtime rendering in the VIEWPORT which would save sooo much time when creating and adjusting scenes (instead of having such slow startups and ofttimes renders of the viewport using Iray rendering)  but I would prefer to do the final rendering with Iray.  (I mean, speaking for myself, speed is not everything for the final work; Sickleyield's Filament product to make dubbed-in shadows for people and scene objects pretty plainly says in the description that Filament does a lousy job at shadowing things-- I mean, gee, that's like going back to 3dl renders without global illumination and other time-costly render-effects sort, which is the whole point and strength of Iray: to have naturally lit and shadowed worlds that look realistic. )     So, given all this, should I be buying add-ons for Filament when I don't intend to quit doing final renders in Iray?

For heaven's sake, the day just keeps getting better. Internet is out because someone cut a fiber optic cable. I'm using my phone hotspot. Anyway one of those pages has a Fliament video, and goes step by step. It's on one of those product pages. I'd link to it, but all I get are swirlies due to the poor phone hotspot connection, but look for that video. :)   I watched part of it and you click three things, I think they load up in Scene. I think you change off the Iray setting, but the internet went down as I was trying to watch it. :(

    Video is here. (Filament)

One thing the video glossed over is in the light shadow section. He demonstrates several things about point light settings then moves on to a discussion of shadows. BUT he did not say that he switched from using a point light ot a distant light.  I struggled for an hour trying to get a shadow from a point light. I had to watch the video 5 times before I saw that his display now showed a DISTANT LIGHT.

@barbult - yeah, it was a very quick skim into things, but I did hear him talk about how, atm at least, filament doesn't use the full resolution of hdris, so they degrade in filament renders (and most hdris aren't exactly ultra crispy, clean and sharp to begin with) and also, no emissives yet, and no subsurface pathtracing on people so basically, people will be rocking it in filament like 3Delight from the M4/V4-era.    Still unanswered was whether the "filament" products do or do not work in Iray rendering.   I'm thinking that, with the known limitations already clear to me, I'm just not overly inclined to be an early adopter and buy up a bunch of filament content when so many of the things I love about Iray aren't there yet.   Love the real-time render aspect though, so looking forward to when this matures further!

    (ETA: "-era" after M4-V4)

@kindredarts  Would you like to discuss your experience with Filament? Answer a few questions if folks have them? (He's made some of the products.)

I'm on a good sleep schedule so I'm gonna to head out, did get internet back right at 10pm. (As promised.)  Watching Tampa getting 3 feet of floodwaters so far, they are at high tide. Oooh, water rescues starting up now. Stay safe Floridians! My sister is in Jacksonville and she'll get 40mph gusts, but thank goodness not a hurricane coming in.

I haven't purchased any of that new Filament content, either.

Hey guys - yes, i can stick around and answer questions if you need answers. I made the tutorial video, but i made it with an older private build we were testing, so some of the names/directories might be a bit different. Just let me know if you're stuck.

I know there's mixed feelings about it in some areas of the forum, but i really like it. I do a lot of daz coaching and training, especially with budding new PA's. A lot of the people i speak to are in Ukraine, Belarus, Croatia and lot of developing countries. Getting a hold of high end Nvidia cards in these countries, especially if you're a young student, is incredibly difficult. I did a lot of voluntary work and promotion with Filament because i believe it will lower the bar of entry for a lot of people. I hope people will embrace the engine because more engagement with it, will mean more development in the future. We're not tied down with filament like with are with 3rd party engines like iray/3dl. Don't get me wrong, i love iray, but there's certainly space for this.

Another complaint i'm hearing is that it just doesn't look as good as iray, which is really disheartening. I understand the criticism, but we're artists. You shouldn't need a high end DSLR to take a nice picture, and you shouldn't need a resource-intensive renderer to make a nice render. I made these before Filament even worked properly -

It's obviously not avengers level CG, but you could probably compare this kind of rendering to a lot of mainline iray content on the gallery. The reason i supported this so heavily, is that even if you're rocking a ten year old laptop that only has one fan rolling at full blast, you can make art. You don't need to know how to rig, how to model, how to program or even how to sim. There's mad amounts of free content out there, just dust off your old PC in the corner and make something. Filament will help you do that.

I hope that explains why i supported this move so much. There's a lot of people out there who just aren't fortunate enough to be able to adopt this as a hobby, and my hope is that we are able to reach them. This won't affect any of the higher end goodies.

You asked what i think of it currently - It obviously requires some tlc over the coming months. After speaking with Daz and the team responsible for the port, i'm confident that we will see more functionality. There's still bits missing, like emissive surfaces and SSS etc, they are there, they just haven't made it into the current iteration i believe. I will keep voicing the need for this functionality until it's integrated. Also, the HDRI's are still maxing out at 4k i believe, they are aware of this, its certainly on the list.

Hopefully, my little rant made sense, it's been a loooong couple of months i've spent with this, i'm going to have to hibernate over the Christmas period.

Anyway, If anyone needs help, let me know...

Also! I made a tutorial on this page on how a currently assemble and light environments in FIlament in case you missed it -

You don't need any products, just whatever environment you're using.

Hey, just getting back online. I'm one of the ones who did buy some of the Filament items, this was the price I got (I think it was 20% off cart, 15% for PC+ getting more than two new debuts, but I didn't calculate it out.)   I wish I had time to play with it but I just managed to get my studio working again and not too eager to install a new version until I get some have-to-get-done work finished. Thanks so much @kindredarts for coming on the thread. Folks, if you have questions, take advantage!  :)

    Fire for Filament 74233 1 $8.55
    Atmosphere for Filament 74097 1 $8.55
Interior Light Pro for Filament and Iray 74225 1 $8.55

Has anyone tried Ultrascenery with Filament?

Ultrascenery in Iray and Filament (after adjusting the brightness down in the Tonemapper options). I'd call that a no-go, except strictly for positioning the camera in the viewport (which is useful), but not for rendering...

Edit: and it may not be useful for positioning either for Ultrascenery, since the camera became very slow to respond, at least in this scene (may need more experimentation)

I won't be reviewing them any time soon, unfortunately. I'm in the middle of scrutinizing html coding. I lost all my bookmarks when the driver ruined my computer so I'm having to redo all my research. While tempted to divert to Filament testing, I'm not installing the newest version of the studio as I JUST got it back to working. :(

@KindredArts Hi, and thanks for popping in! QUESTION: Do products tagged "filament" work in the iray render context?  For instance, the "Fire for Filament" product looks great but would it also work in Iray?    It'd be nice to use filament for creating and adjusting scenes & then use iray for final output.
PS: Have nearly all of your catalog available here at Daz, Love your stuff!

  • KindredArtsKindredArts Posts: 1,249

    @genaris

The products i sell that are tagged as "Filament" are specifically for people who want to use filament as their renderer. If they're just using filament as a precursor to an iray render, they should obviously stick to iray products and just take what they're seeing in the viewport with a pinch of salt. Maybe in the future there will be more parity between the renderers, and there won't be the need for any distinction, but for now, you're going to get different results depending on whether you're using FIlament products or Iray products.

The "Fire for Filament" set, for instance, is different than my Fireworx set, because filament doesn't do emissive shading, it requires a load of parented lights and shading changes to make it look right. Iray, however, does do emissive shading, and can handle translucent smoke, so it's shaded differently.

Hope that helps, thank you for your custom! Good luck smiley

I bought all three KindredArts filament products yesterday. I had the Fireworx set for Iray and new just how excellent it was, so the filament version was a no brainer. The atmosphere and the light set were also a given. I have been playing with the fire and atmosphere, and I will be honest, I am not doing a good job with the atmosphere, but that is a user issue only.

I picked an old, pre-Iray barn, some old crows and a vintage car, and one HDRI. I wasn't watching and the render engine switched back to Iray from Viewport. Not sure how that happened. That was test 2 and 3 that I am not posting. Test 1 was where I had the atmosphere at 64 x 64. I later switched to 16 x 16. I have no idea where that prop is now.

Folks, I honestly believe that Filament is like a tool in the 3D tool box, just like pastels, oil paints, watercolors, colored pencils, or ink and pen are tools for a 2D artist. You pick the render engine that you need for the goal or vision you need to express.

I joined Daz after Iray had been out for a while, so I don't know if there were similar dismay then, but if there was and you were around then, you may have watched as people explored, experimented, learned and grew to enjoy Iray. Yes, some because of hardware issues have limitations find Iray prohibitive. Filament is free of that issue as KindredArts noted.

@memcneil   I'm not too "into" this yet, so this may be a "Huh?" question. But is Filament doing what happened to Nath, and that is turning things into cartoony items? Aka, that grass?

    Hi Novica

I did another with the Atmo plane. Let me post it and Test 2 where the render engine switched itself back to Iray.

Edit: I had the wrong 'Iray' version attached. Deleted Test 5 and added Test 2 (Iray).

This set comes with that grass. I actually was wondering as I did these tests what would happen with billboards, wether plants or the Non-Crowd people. Ah, I read up again. Apparently, instantcies (sp?) don't do well with Filament right now. Maybe in the future?

So UltraScenery is not able to be used with it yet. Except in that very interesting idea of a dream/nightmare type of vision.

When this came out initially, I skimmed the thread, and I saw that 3Diva was really pushing the envelope on it. There are others but it is late for me and my brain is mush. In a way, I wish there was a place to collect the renders folks did in that thread and others, in one place, without all the filler chat between them. It is a pity the Gallery is down now.
