    Filament seems like it's a good thing. There are lots of differences in how both render engines look at the work. At least from the few tests I've done.

    Filament Images look flatter and without much depth then with IRAY.

    I used the identical lights, backgrounds etc with this image.  Ran in both filament and iray. Filament so far does odd things with hair. And using lots of point lights and distant lights seem to help with lighting and some shadow creation.

    They do look different.

    And point lights and distant lights are the two I have the least experience with. The one point light I used in my scene took me so long to find, then to move it into position. I did try the light dish from Monochrome Edition Lights, but I think I only saw it in the accidental Iray renders and not the Filament ones after it was there.

    I think I am going to have to really look at my existing shaders and lights and sort them by 3DL and Iray, and type of light. Before I really understood the difference when I started I bought a lot of stuff, then I focused on Iray. I recently started searching out 3DL shaders again. But other than a handful of 3DL renders, I haven't tried it much.

    Mary, (and everyone else)  You probably know this, but worth a reminder-

    Once you create a light, remember you can choose it in the viewport to "become" the light. (You know, that dropdown that says Perspective View, etc)

    You're actually pointing the light as you move around the viewport.  I LOVE this feature. I still recall eight years ago when two very, very experienced users said, "HUH? I didn't know that!" and we all had a laugh about it because I was a complete newbie and actually taught THEM something. Dear Jaderail jumped in and said he should remind people of this more often, it would make it easier to tell people how to light scenes (instead of just "move your light to....")    Once you start "becoming" the camera/light, it's addictive to play with!

    Yes, a very useful feature - but not with point lights :)

    It works with Distant Lights, as well. You can't move closer or further away, but you can easily see where your light is coming from.

    Part of my problems come with my desktop sometimes, if I push it with simulations, then try to find the right HDRI and then light set combination, the computer will start a weird 'dance' around the scene. Generally my warning I better save if I haven't, close and reboot my computer, then reload DS and the scene. And lose a half hour or more. On my laptop, if I stress it out, and then try to go to Filament or try Iray Preview, it flat out crashes hard. And of course I always have forgotten to save a scene file before that point. 

    On another note, may I recommend https://www.daz3d.com/iv-30-must-have-poses-for-genesis-8-females bares a second look. I have found the poses to be unique and possibly useful for other purposes than the ones they suggested. Besides a lot of work that went into them.

    I believe it's because they light in all directions. If you select one, you should see "Rays" emitting from the center. It looks a bit like a sea urchin.

    Aagh! The offerings of the last few days have inspired me to finally start taking a serious interest in animation in 3D for the first time since I downloaded Terragen 0.x in 199whatever.... LOL

    I think because technically pointlights have no surface area or volume although in my eyes since they have a location it should be made to do the same as the others but doesn't.

    Well I have now bought the other two animation bundles and also added in the SY products. But I am going to have to find out 'HOW' to use those animations.

    Do you load a character, dress, hair, & prop them and open either the animate2 or the Timeline, and do 'what' at that point?

    How do you save a successful run, and does that need more software?

    Well I tried. I loaded a character, clothes, hair. Opened timeline, then went to animations, tried the walk package and had to expand my bar. (Forgot to switch to Filament.) The character moved in jerky movements, but I could not find how to stop the animation. Except to CTL-ALT- DEL and kill DS.

    Take a look at this one, where you get 100 poses and it's only $4.94 and 74% off to start with. (I don't know if other discounts apply or have already been applied. I'm not shopping at the moment.)  It is the same two vendors wink

     The character moved in jerky movements, but I could not find how to stop the animation. Except to CTL-ALT- DEL and kill DS. 

    The jerkiness comes from frames being skipped in the viewport animation. I think that's what filament is suppose to help: render every frame quickly.

    To stop the animation, there should be a set of icons in the lower center of the animation pane. The middle icon is a square if the animation is running. Click on it and the animation should stop and the icon will be a right-facing triangle.

    Okay. I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend a product: Instancify. This script is a Daz Original and can be purchased today for about $2.35 if bought with two Debut items in the cart, triggering the additional 20% discount on the cart. I should mention I was involved with the development of this script from the beginning, and I wrote the PDF manual.

    What does Instancify do? The short answer is it converts duplicate objects to instances.

    The script analyzes the scene loaded in Daz Studio, whether you kitbashed together the "perfect set," or simply used one of the load presets of your favorite environment. It looks for things that could cause problems and if found, lets you know what the problem is and that it cannot continue. If no "stop conditions" are found, it will give you a list of objects that have duplicates, indicate the number of those objects and show you how many polygons you can remove from the scene if you "instancify" that object. You can select any combination of those objects by clicking on each line. Clicking on a selected line will deselect it. And for your convenience, there is a button that will select all the objects.

    Instancify respects the materials of objects by default, so it is possible to see the same object listed multiple times. If it doesn't matter, you can deselect that option and Instancify will automatically scan and reorder the objects for you, saving even more resources. This second scan is fast as it ignores material parameters.

    The script provides an "After Action Report," which will show how many polygons you saved, and even how many objects it was able to remove.

    Instancify is limited to props. You'll want to run the script before you add in your characters, creatures, animals, etc.

I hope people will embrace the engine because more engagement with it, will mean more development in the future. We're not tied down with filament like with are with 3rd party engines like iray/3dl. Don't get me wrong, i love iray, but there's certainly space for this.

    It's obviously not avengers level CG, but you could probably compare this kind of rendering to a lot of mainline iray content on the gallery. The reason i supported this so heavily, is that even if you're rocking a ten year old laptop that only has one fan rolling at full blast, you can make art. You don't need to know how to rig, how to model, how to program or even how to sim. There's mad amounts of free content out there, just dust off your old PC in the corner and make something. Filament will help you do that.

    I hope that explains why i supported this move so much. There's a lot of people out there who just aren't fortunate enough to be able to adopt this as a hobby, and my hope is that we are able to reach them. This won't affect any of the higher end goodies.

    I'm a hobbyist who renders IRAY on a 5 yo mac laptop that sounds like a dying jet engine while I let it run through the night crying So this development is very exciting! Sure, I'll have to wait a while until everything settles... I'm not even updating to 4.14 and Big Sur until I've heard enough folks say that the two play nice together (at the moment they don't as far as I know). But I can see myself switching from IRAY to Filament entirely at one point in the future if this is what it promises to be!

    This script is really easy to use, and the first page or two of the manual will show you just how easy. I started out with a quick overview of using it, something that read months after the last time the script was used will jog the memory. That's followed with a step-by-step example. Only then does the manual go into details on each of the features, dialogs and error messages. (I wrote the manual exactly how I'd want to read such a manual.) There's even an appendix with very specific examples of how to work around some of the limitations.

    After you've Instancified a scene or two, I hope you'll share your experience here and/or in the Instacify thread in The Commons.

    Seconded.  I purchased it, but with a bit of hesitance.  My purchased vs actually used percentage for tools is embarassing low. blush   I'm sure the PAs don't mind though.

    This is looking like more of a serious need and my 2018 laptop is 32gb, with a 1080, while my 2017 desktop is 64gb, with a 1080ti but both are balking at some scenes. One was crashing the laptop, and I finally was able to see why, it was 3.30+Gb in size. I had to back-up and think about that one. I have another I had to shelve totally. 

    Totte does great work, I just have to figure the stuff out. But I bought his bridge set just because my son is in the Army Corps of Engineers and while I was in the service I studied the history of those bridges in the military. So cool he took the time to create a 3D set.

    I've only visited Ft Walton / Destin beaches once although I've been to Pensacola several times and the one time we was there a school of sharks (Do sharks have schools? Maybe it was a gang of sharks.) caused the beaches to be closed and chased (and banned) us out of the water. They were really close to shore for some reason that day. Then later that week a wind storm kicked up winds so hard on the beach that the sand was actually stinging our skin like needles. These winds though were not hurricane and tornado related, just the sort of natural winds that get generated all the time.
