32 years with the same company in the city of my birth before retirement 4 years ago.
What can I say, I've seen other parts of the country, but I prefer Home. :)
There's a lot to be said for having home turf, to know stability and not see every dawn in a different place.
Alas, my Dad was a field engineer, before I moved out the longest we lived anywhere was 3 years. Dad and Mom loved to travel, and I got to come along. :blank: :blank: It ruined me for "settling down", it appears that the wanderlust my parents had ended up in me as well. I was six months old when we first moved, and it didn't end until I moved out in Virginia to move in with my gf Michelle.
I think it was a miracle I was able to settle down for the 10 years I was married and living in Maryland, before I pulled us up and moved to California. Things went downhill from there as my ex-wife really wasn't a nomad.
This is why I'm leery of close real-life relationships, I know for a fact I'm going to feel nailed down and unfree, so I have a natural resistance to any situation that might restrict my freedom. This is not a place you want to try to forge an LTR from, let me tell you.
Probably TMI.
...I hate moving, I hate the disruption to my life it causes.
I've been in the same place now for nearly sixteen years and thoroughly enjoy it. I like stability, which I didn't have much of most of my life. In some ways I'm like a hobbit, I like a cozy place that feels "lived in". I don't feel relaxed at all in most hotels (unless it is an old one) or those new slapped together hipster apartment blocks like have been springing up all over town here, for they just feel too..."sterile" and "lifeless". I'm rather content to stay in my "hobbit hole" (which is is what I call my place) even given the climate and joint/bone issues I deal with for it is the one place I feel the most comfortable.

Yes I don't mind freelancing but somewhere to call home keeps me sane, we moved to our place in 1996 and probably won't move again.
What kind of tablet?
Asus MEMOpad 8. 8 inch screen, Android 4.(not sure), 10GB onboard left, microSD card slot. white case, orange/green Neoprene cover to keep it safe in my backpack. It's nothing to write home about, but it's quite capable for email Web surfing, Kindle reading, and some video watching. Crap for 3D games.
Hmm... my laptop just got busted up in a fall on the bus. Might be interested if shipping could be figured out.
...was over on Turbosquid looking for freebies when I checked their offerings for fish. Not a very impressive selection. The only Loaches I found were 30$.
Guess there's no such thing as a "Free Loach" ;-)
...on that note better head off to bed before someone smacks me with a 10 kilo king salmon.
Nite all...
My computer has no internet and my tablet is acting up with the forum. Just wrote a lengthy post and it vanished without being posted.
socks tend to vanish as well, especially in the morning

Since I don't have the original box or manual, it's not heavy, but getting it to a post office out here could be an issue. It's really not a laptop replacement, either..
Ugh, overslept and missed the early bus. Boss doesn't care, but I do.. have to walk up to the transit center now. :shut:
BUT - I got paid, and I have enough time to make a cup of coffee and drink it! :cheese:
Oww my neck hurts oww oww slept in a bad position...
it's morning. it's raining.
was coming outta starbucs this morning, a really good looking dude with long hair was walking in. he said 'good mornin'
fantasies raced through my mind, i mighta stared at him longer than polite. ffweww
starbucks is right at the airport entrance, might have been a once in life time encounter.
one week to hallowee'en. rotka extended their render contest. still have time to render something
I have this interview in half an hour but I am uncertain if I will do well. Right now I am afraid that I won't get the job and I will never get a job. I wish I was confident this morning but I am not. Still going to the interview but I have my doubts.
Just bought a Hario slim mini hand-cranked coffee grinder and some Velton's Treehouse Blend whole bean coffee!
Once they arrive I can use whole beans, no more not being able to try some coffee that is whole bean only. :)
Even better, the whole coffee-making system will fit into one corner of my rolling duffel bag, so easy to move, and anywhere I can get hot water, I can make coffee! :cheese: :cheese:
Thanks again KK... I think! %-P

complaint: Genesis 2's skin shader bug strikes again. Now I need to close Daz Studio 4, run the program again and load the scene again. Then I need to wait for tdlmake to finish optimizing images.
eh.. this is the open GL preview. wrong image. lol

I'm aware of that, but it does give internet access that isn't limited to 90 minutes per day (local library limit on using their computers, you can use their wireless from about 30 minutes before they open to about 30 after they close). But if shipping's a pain, no problem.
@Bwaomega - where are you located? There aren't any export restrictions on my end, if you're outside the US there might be issues with customs, though..

Ok, that'd be easy! I found a FedEx and a UPS office on the bus route, so it wouldn't be too hard to get it to you. Wish they had a Post Awful close, I could ship it ground for cheap.
If you want it, let me find a box and some bubble wrap. You can have it for just the cost of shipping.
I'll PM you when I have shipping supplies!

What can I say, I've seen other parts of the country, but I prefer Home. :)
Longest run I ever did was the military - just shy of 4 years because I got an offer for a tech job - and there was some reg that if you get a civilian offer that's many times more than you make in the service, you get a sort of conflict-of-interest early out. If its too much, they force you out, or so I was told - but I wasn't that high. I got an early out 3 months prior to what would have been my normal out... as my job offer was not willing to wait.
I work in a profession now where, if you've been somewhere more than 3 years - people begin wondering if you have a problem with learning / keeping up... And that often includes the blokes who started the company...
Company I went to after the military - went belly up not long after when Samsung chose our competition for its semiconductor plant, but that happened at the same time as the web took off.
Fortunately for me, it seems like 90% of the web jobs, globally, all exist within 50 miles of San Francisco. So its just a question of which bridge one will be driving over this or that year. Because oddly - the profession best suited for 'telecommuting' out of possibly anything one could do in life... has almost no jobs that allow such.

When I lived in Silicon Valley, I was contracting - sometimes back to the same place 2-3 times! :bug: Lived in Fairfax, San Bruno, and Sunnyvale.
Past crazy times.. far slower here in Tulsa, perfect for an ancient engineer like me! %-P
Fairfax is a neighborhood in Los Angeles and a county in Virginia. I wonder if they are named after the same person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Fairfax,_6th_Lord_Fairfax_of_Cameron">Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron
I've lived in Fairfax County in VA., in Fairfax, CA., and Fairfax (city), VA. - went to Oakton High School.
Dunno about if they're all named after the same person, I can believe the two in Virginia are...
