Very hot outside, but even hotter in the case our hardware was in.  Some chips were 350F on their surface!  So unhappy chips.. one died. sad

Will be another night for cold beer, I think I've spent half my day sitting outside in the heat... feh.indecision

…oh, forgot the price on the Cray Titan, only 93$ million.

Quite a bit more modest is the workstation concept I have been working up:

MB: : ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS SSI EEB Dual LGA 2011-3 socket, with 8 x 288 pin DDR4 slots (Quad Channel, maximum memory support 512 GB), and x4 PCI 3,0 x 16  dual width slots.

CPUs:  Intel Dual Xeon E5-2630 v3 Haswell-EP  2.4 GHz 8 core 16 thread  (total of 32 processor threads)

    Memory:  G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series,  288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM, 128GB (8 x 16GB) DDR4 2400 quad channel

GPUs:  x4 EVGA GeForce GTX TITAN X 12GB 384-Bit 3,072 CUDA Cores for a total of 12,288 cores

SSD:  (Boot) SAMSUNG  850 PRO MZ-7KE512BW  512GB SATA III SSD

SSD:  (Library) Crucial  MX200 CT1000MX200SSD1, 1TB SATA II SSD

HDDs: (storage & backup) Dual Western Digital WD Red Pro, 2 TB NAS HDD 7200RPM

    PSU:  Rosewill Hercules-1600, 1600W Dual 12 V rails

    DVD:  SAMSUNG SH-224FB/RSBSSATA x 24

Case:  Zahlman GS 1200 Mid ATX  with 5 fans (including two 200 MM fans one by the GPUS) with provision for additional units.

Aftermarket CPU coolers (2) – undecided yet

OS:  MS Win7 Pro 196 GB memory support

Approximate cost, 8,850$ (C’mon Megabucks Lotto)

64 GB Ram seems to be a sweet spot, for what I do anyhow. Two E5's one the one bus will need some cooling,  better off rackmounting equipment like that imo :)

..still looking at CPU cooler options hence why the "undecided" note. Considering liquid cooling solutions as well.

The only issue with a rack mount is it will take up a huge footprint and more space for just one "blade" (as I want it at a reasonable height from the floor) compared to a tower case.  It would also require a different from factor for the PSU (which is also more expensive). The case I specified is big for a "half height" tower, actually a few inches taller than the one I currently have), and I will be installing the optional fans as well.  Pretty much all of the full height cases I saw had inferior cooling solutions as well as that ridiculous window where I'd rather have a big exhaust fan for the GPUs.

Crikey, won't have to turn on the heat in the flat during the winter with this monster running (though may need to consider air conditioning at least for the room where it's in for the summer).

I am a firm believer in "overhead room". In case a render process dumps to CPU/Physical memory, I want to be sure there is more than enough memory available as I remember you mentioned once that you rendered a scene with a lot of reflectivity which almost hammered your old 64 GB MacPro.into submission.

Yeah, I want my system to go up to 11!

Ninja Dragguns. Very swift and speedy, not very big though. Their eyes don't always glow red like in the first two pics, dramatic as it might be. Their eyes only start glowing like that when they're really angry ^^

....oooh, I like these guys, especially the first one.

    - I had to sit outdoors for 2 hours to run a test, so I'm
    - Sweaty and tired and crabby and it's barely past 10AM!!

However, I have some cold grapes, string cheese, and Powerade Zero, so I slowly but surely feel better.smiley

...Leela blushes, giggles, and thanks you.

One more nice comfortable day and sleeping night, then back into the oven for at least a week  Had wquite  downpour for a short while yesterday evening, still didn't really do much for the tinder dry conditions.  Just about every lawn in the neighbourhood is brown and flowers are struggling. At least for once, it wasn't blisteringly hot for the big Oregon Brewers' festival at the waterfront this past weekend (though going to be a scorcher for next weekend's Red Bull Flugtag).

The post office was supposed to deliver my AC adapter today.  I did not see the package today.  Maybe the postal carrier deleivered the box to the wrong house.

    It rained a little today.

Maybe they were afraid of the little rain?

I bought a new outfit for G3F and trying to play with her and a new PC scene.

I made an assumption about the PC scene I got.  In order to do the promos I need to load a scene that I have not downloaded yet.  Now DIM Is acting up.

edit: it is free but still have to put it in my cart and check out.

remember when all you needed to make art was a coloring book and a few crayons?

was there any rhyme or reason for which colorings were good enough for the fridgerator door?

Yeah, I want my system to go up to 11!

Most presentations I been to about this stuff is over my head, but modern memory management is very efficient, to get to 11 you will need to look into that side of things, leaving aside heat issues think there is more overhead involved if you have ram configured as a large  flat-file and in any case if  the system isn't collecting garbage ram gets fragmented and a little slower to access. Haven't had to cope with that stuff for a while but from experience render engines are slowed by double word addressing, multi processor calls and inefficient garbage collection so you have to be aware of how to tweak all those as well.  For example single processor rendering is a tad quicker, cycle for cycle, than a multi processor setup, 32 bit function calls are a tad quicker than 64, which is also more memory hungry cos of  bitwise word alignment and so on.

  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,040

...very vtue about the 2 vs 1 CPU, your single 12 core/24 thread CPU is faster than two 6 core CPUs even at the same clock speed.  However this si the technology that is pretty much at our disposal. Intel does have a 36 core hyperthreading CPU but it is still in the development stage and is targeted more towards large research systems rather than us enthusiasts, same for Nvidia's forthcoming 32 GB Pascal GPU (imagine the compute power of a Cray Titan with 18,688 of those 36 core CPUs and Pascal GPUs - scary)..

I will be delving more into memory configuration/management in the coming months as considering the investment involved.  12 GB of Video memory may seem a lot but I'm sure will find a way to exceed it especially once I start rendering in sizes for fine art quality prints.

I guess. Trying to go to work. I think someone wants me not to go to work by putting ultimatum on me.  Have a perfectly clean room or do not go to work.  This is not the type of job I can call out just because someone wants me to stay home but not really stay home.  Instead I would have to ride a stupid van all day just so I can loose my job.
