$1 or $2 isn't bad.  I once worked with somebody who dumped $70 into a single lottery drawing. (he didn't win.) Yikes!   :-)  I don't know if that was an exception, or if that was a regular thing.  How often do lottery tickets come out, every week?   hmmm... $70 x 52 weeks/year x 30 years = $109,200.00 .  I bet he didn't do that though, that had to have been an exception.  I think I've purchased 2 tickets, one of which cost $5, so I'm probably only suffered a $10 lifetime loss.   Then again I also know somebody who viewed buying a lottery ticket just like buying a movie ticket, and figured it was another entertainment cost, like seeing a movie, that made him happy since he could spend all week dreaming about winning even though he knew he probably wouldn't.

...now that is an addict.  70$ will not significantly change the odds from 1$ or 2$.  Used to have a press operator who on payday would go to the pub near our workplace and dump 100 to 150$ into the "Video Crack" machines (what many of us here call the video poker machines). She rarely broke even. Would watch her put 20 after 20 in and wince as just one would easily cover my tab for the entire evening.

As to the Cinema, I rarely go to a "first run" one anymore as the prices are ridiculous. 12 - 16$ just to get in and another 15 - 20$ for refreshments. I usually wait until a film that I want to see hit the "second run" market as then I only have to pay 3$ for admission and maybe another 7$ for a pint of good beer and slice of well made pizza. Total cost less than just the admission to a mainstream cinema.

I guess I'm relatively lucky in the movie price respect.  Our local theater here has 6 or 7 screens and three of them at least can show the 3D movies.  They play first-run movies and the standard matinee price is $7, evening price is $9 and there's a $2.50 surcharge for 3D. smiley  Tuesday is half price day for popcorn and soda.  But like all theaters, refreshment prices are outrageous. Normal price is $6.25 for a small popcorn, $5.50 for a small soda! surprise  Most times I go for the 1:00 PM matinee and have lunch beforehand, so I don't buy refreshments (if I'm going to spend $15 for food and drink I'd rather get it at Ruby Tuesdays or Red Lobster).  However, being in a podunk little city the movies that sell must be family-friendly or uber-macho or otherwise guaranteed blockbusters.  So we sometimes don't get the more interesting movies because the conservative "clean-living" or naive residents would stay away in droves.  So, in those cases I have to drive 60 miles to the "big city" Erie, Pennslyvania. frown

And regarding Lotto addicts:...  When I lived in Florida I'd stop in at the local quickie mart to get my weekly single lottery ticket.  Often standing behind some welfare receipient, dirty, discheveled, trailer trash  marking his/her number selection sheet with what I could see by the voiceless mumblings were specific patterns or numbers, thinking that they somehow made a calculated difference.  Then throwing several $20s at the clerk, and gleefully walking out with their monthly food budget coverted to most certainly worthless pieces of paper. sad Then I'd walk up and buy my single ticket and give my usual comment "It only takes one", to which the clerk would smile and nod.

Ignorance can be blissful but is more often simply pathetic.

...the desktop icon I have still shows as "Daz 4.6" even though clicking it opens 4.8.  If you don't delete the shortcut to the older version first, it will just use that one instead of adding a new one (save for the beta releases).

..that's why I like the neighbourhood "second run" cinema down the street.  As a senior I get a 1$ discount on admission, they don't gouge you on concessions, you can get a pint of beer for less than what the first run cinemas charge for of a cup of full of ice and HFCS laden artificially flavoured syrup and carbonated water, and they have a better variety of films to choose from.  Most of the "family" stuff is the shown at early matinees when beer and wine isn't served. They also usually have one "classic" a week and often do special monthly themes.

When I lived in Stevens Point Wi, it was kind of like where you are. One cinema by the campus and another one downtown both which pretty much screened only the mainstream stuff. Fortunately the University campus would also have film nights so you could see more "socially challenging" fare.

Where I live they have these self service lotto machines where you can either use a play slip or just choose a "quick pick" for several different games. I remember one time I was at the local supermart, had my Megabucks play slip in hand and ended up waiting for this one fellow who was inserting 1$ at a time and pressing the "print ticket" button, after which he repeated the action again. This went on 25 times. Took him well over thirty minutes. Guess he didn't understand that he could have just gotten a twenty and a fiver, put both in, and only hit the quick pick button once and he'd get all 25 sets of numbers on one slip.

Unfortunately all that info is still on the notebook, which I am hesitant to use due to the "blank out" issue, until I can find the proper solution. It definitely is not the connection as again it would either flicker and/or go completely black as if the system was turned off.  After the screen goes blank, the display's backlight is still receiving power.

So stop messing about and pull that hard drive or SSD from the notebook and run it through an industrial shredder.  This should be in everybody's bucket list to do at least once in their lives!  Not becasue their data is important.  Everybody thinks that just like everybody thinks they are "excellent drivers".  No, you should do it because it's fun to crunch things up!

I believe the problem is that the notebook's being finicky, not that he needs to destroy the data, he just needs a working notebook.

What I don't understand is why he thinks a password manager not built into the browser is less secure than the password manager built into Firefox.  If I were a hacker looking to hack into a password manager, I'd definitely go after the ones that are built into the browsers.

...unfortunately I don't have buckets of money to go out and buy new hardware vwhen issues like this occur. Hence, I have to find a more reasonable and cost effective solution for the existing system.. I am woefully underemployed, have very little spare cash, and am facing the distinct possibility of finding myself out on the street in a few weeks as I no longer can afford the skyrocketing rents where I live.

If the issue is in the display, perhaps you can use an external monitor as a temporary solution if there's a port for it.  People often discard working older monitors you could get one for free.

    ...and yet more woes.

Updated to the latest version of FF on the workstation and it will not let me log onto one of the tech sites I frequent (the button to log in is for some unknown reason being blocked even though my AV shows it as a "safe" site so it isn't the AV that's causing it).  So this morning I start up the workstation to see if I can fond more trouble shooting tips for the notebook only to discover all my saved passwords were deleted.   Being dyslexic this is more than a pain in the bum to remember which is why I had FF save passwords in the first place (I will not use a universal one as that is an invite for trouble).  The only place I now have have stored passwords is on the notebook (which is still running and older version of FF as the newer ones bloat in memory until they freeze due to exceeding the 32 bit 2 GB limit).

Really unhappy with this latest version and their home page seems to offer no help.

Where else did you post about this password issue?  Using the new forums thread?  See my reply there.  Two words...Password Manager.

    Dana

...just Mec4D's thread in reference to how sometimes updates can sometimes seem more like several steps backwards instead of an improvement.

As to Norton's password manager, I do remember there were security issues a while back which is why I never used it.  If the master password gets hacked then they get everything. Normally if a site was updated and I had to reenter my password to save it again, I'd just go to Options > Security > Saved Passwords to retrieved the one I need copy it, and paste it in.

The master password should be strong.  The stronger you make it the tougher it is to hack.  And besides, it is on your hard drive, not in the cloud somewhere.  Of the two, the saved passwords in your browser history or in Windows are much easier to hack...if someone actually had access to get them, which is also what would be required for the master password.  And truthfully, if you are that worried about it, you could store it on a thumb drive and plug that in only when you need to open the vault, to copy and paste it, then unplug it and it's not anywhere to be accessed.  The vault is encrypted on your hard drive.  The saved passwords list in Windows is not.  I've seen someone access those, and it was really easy if you know what to do.  Even the user account was easy to get to.  My friend did it for me once when I had a crash on m computer.  But Norton ID safe is not the only one out there.  I don't know the names of others, but I've heard of a couple that are highly regarded.  With dyslexia and arthritis, I would do some research and pick one.  It will save you a boatload of troubles.

    Dana
