why isn't anybody talking about Daz 4.22?

  • k, so I pulled the trigger after all, after 4.21 once again randomly destoryed my local working enviorment without login online, 4.22 main take away

    1. 4.22 doesn't override so it and the older version can co-exist!! a postive change, you will have nothing to lose if you don't like the new version

    2. asset loading speed improved drastically, a single Gen8 with loads of morph usually takes 2 mins to show, now around 30 secs

    3. Ads does exist, but only pops up when you click on "new scene" tab, personally I don't mind ads, especially when it pushes tons of free stuffs I didn't know exist lol!  You never have to see the ads if you don't use the "new scene tab", just use the clean load option, speaking for myself, it's not a big deal, if not a likable feature

    4. some users mentioned aniblock and animation flow for gen 8 are butter smooth in 4.22, unfortunately it's not the case for me, all my Gen8 characters still rigged jankily on my top of the line hardware, 0 improvement for me in this area

    5. No obvious subD and iray difference in final render, will need to test more scenes to find out.

    6. rendering time descreaed slightly, so another postive change.

Overall, I like it, it's probably the first time when a new version of Daz didn't mess up with my existing working enviroment and bring postive changes.

It did overwrite mine, both the files in the DIM Downloads folder and the installed 4.21.  But the 4.22 beta which currently is the same version as the general release as far as I can see can coexist with any general release.

  • Figured out a way to avoid the pop up ads.  Start DS with a blank canvas (no props, lights, people, etc).  Save it as New Scene.  Then whenever you're ready for a new scene, just load New Scene.  Your blank New Scene will load ready to be built upon.  No pop up, no ads.

Right. Two versions from the same channel could  co-exist only if one was installed using a different method or path (and the uninstaller was sabotaged) - there would be a degree of risk in this as they would use the same settings (unless one or both wa a named instacne of the application with its own settings).

System restore did not fix the broken path to the uninstaller (System re booted prior to install completing not being able to uninstall from control panel prog list) Luckily I save system images every so often. I had one dating back to june. Just need to update a bunch of stuff before writing an updated save.

Sorry, but what is considered intrusive and what is not is not defined by you/by Daz, but by the user. Quite individually. I, for example, find these ads far too large and disturbing.

And I suppose it's your prerogative to feel that way, but you're missing the main point of my post.

From the way people were describing this, they were making it sound like there was a large unremovable ad eating up space on the main workspace.

No. The exact scope of this problem is that the window that you will now see for a few seconds if (and only if) you choose to tell DS to load a new scene (rather than restarting DS entirely, which has long been preferable anyway to fully clear Iray's VRAM usage) does not look like this:

    But instead looks like this:

The entire right side here - over half of the space people are complaining about - is currently a reminder about a free tutorial.
Also note that none of this is 3rd party advertising; this isn't Youtube showing you ads for a VPN service you don't want or need. Without Daz actually tailoring any recommendations to your purchase history, it's hard to imagine advertising being much more relevant than "products for the program you are currently using".

These ads do not intervene in the functionality of that window. The window does not make you wait for the ads before it loads. It does not make you wait for the ads to load before it works. With my network disconnected, I can open the window, select a scene and load it without DS kicking up any fuss.

It does not encroach on the standard workspace at all. Many users will have to go looking for this window to find it. Those who do see it might see it for a few seconds. It is quite likely that anyone here complaining about it has used up more of their time on that than they would have seen of this in the next year.

That is an honest, frank and, as far as I can tell, exhaustive assessment of this situation.

If people are still worked up about this, then I guess they can submit customer service tickets to Daz, but let's be entirely clear about what the situation is.

  • After updateing to a new driver again (546.01) DAZ studio seem to behave more like it did before updating to 4.22 so hopefully my problems where with Nividia drivers.

  • My first thought when I saw advertising mentioned was that this might be the end of any new versions of DS for me.  I installed 4.22 as the beta (I usually render in 4.15 for the speed unless I need volumetrics).

I find though that after clicking File > New, I then click the New Scene button before the adverts have loaded.  Even if they loaded faster, I'm only clikcing one button, so I can easily ignore them and get on with the new scene.  As long as Daz don't move the goalposts later and expand this to sidebars or banners in the program, then I don't see any issues with it.

I was able to repair everything with my system image. I was able to install in it properly all one has to do is cancel the restart. I ran into the OOT hair prob which is why the 1 scene I had was crashing. Don't know what else could be affected. I am going to stick with 4.21 for now. Once im completed what I am doing I may re try. Perhaps we will have an updated installer by then.

How do  back up 4.21 so if this is breaks i still have it to work with?

Also can the ad be removed?

I don't know if this will work for you and your current version. But this was sent to me by tech support awhile back.

    "Go to C:/Program Files/DAZ3D.

Change the name of the DAZStudio4 folder to DAZStudio4Old

    Install the latest build.

This will install to C:/Program Files/DAZ3D/DAZStudio4 and will not overwrite the older version of Daz Studio now found in the DAZStudio4Old folder.

This is so that if you do decide to update to 4.21 you can save and keep your 4.12 version should you decide that your current system is unable to use 4.21 as efficiently as you would like."

  • Don't be too quick to ignore those ads. They include freebies that aren't showing (for me anyway) in the store. Look at the first few items in the "Store" panel at the bottom, they're all free!

The odd thing is, those freebies don't appear if you do things like going to the Shop page and ordering the whole store from low price to high, you have to get there from the New Scene page. I guess they're using them to see how many people use the new version.

They were visible if someone sorted the new releases page by "Price Low-High" at the end of August and were spotted by @PerttiA (and maybe other people too), see the message at the bottom of page 2:

The only real annoyance I've found in 4.22 so far is this "enhancement" to the Zero Selected Item(s) command. When you select it, you now get this dialog:

I use that command A LOT. I've got a keyboard shortcut pointing at it because it's so useful. It's a real pain that I now have to choose an option on a dialog as well every time I do so (I think "Restore" behaves as the old command used to do). I think they should add a "do not ask this again" option to make it go away.

That's probably because zeroing a G9 figure, zeroes dials that should not be zeroed

That's likely a caution as it does affect how G9 will or won't work afterwards.

My Template Tab only has "New Scene" in it.

    Is there something I'm missing?

Install and Update 2 packages, first Default Templates for Daz Studio 4.21+, then Default Resources for Daz Studio 4.21+.

If you still see no other templates there, press F2, Content tab, tick Show Hidden Vendor Categorizations....

Sounds like great improvements have been made. I look forward to trying it out later this month.

This is related to fixing an issue, which necessitates reprocessing the packaing, which is seen as an update even if the files are unchanged.

You can  avoid it, as explained in the change log - using http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/actions/action_trigger/start#example_with_settings

There will presumably be other offers, some free soem not, in future - at least if you log-in (which you can now, by default, do without getting a possibly unwelcome metadata update).

All good now that someone pointed out the Doc pointed out the hair glitch thingy. Interestingly enough there was no reboot during my installation on my rendering beast @ home. I see faster load times for G8..

  • Wasn't Daz gonna do some character AI Dazgpt thing? Did they ever release that or did it take over Daz HQ and made them stick ads in their programs as a way of mind control for the DazGPT overlords?

Stop the presses. G8 aniblocks are now butter-smooth and realtime in the viewport.

Hi Gordig, that started my press! A big improvement in animation playback would definately make it worth the risk to update DS, IMO. Question: Is this improvement evident in the Filament drawstyle? And, how many figures can move at once? Thanks! / peace

I use DS almost exclusively as a platform for exporting Daz assets to C4D and Houdini these days, so I can't go too in-depth about a lot of the other changes. I just had the idea to see if they improved aniblock performance, and it looks like they have.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like you weren't testing in Filament. Anyway, it s seems promising. And thanks for all your tutorials!/ Has anybody tested 4.22 with aniblocks in Filament? Thanks / peace

Just gave it a quick test, and it looks like Filament is just as quick as texture shaded, but unfortunately the benefits seem to vanish if you have anything on the figure, potentially anything else in the scene. Adding clothing to the figure, even with smoothing disabled, slows payback down considerably.

Concerning ads: security-wise, i consider them more of a no-go for professional software, in case they are loaded dynamically. Even loading new ones with DIM to show in Studio (hypothetically), could pose a similar risk. This is less of an issue, if the security is same or better than the software and content that is downloaded with DIM anyway (...), but would be a bigger problem, if data handling is somewhere else, like from ad-networks. I hope the latter isn't what is supposed to happen. On the other hand, as long as it runs offline, it's not as bad...
