Carrara Challenge #22: “Wild, Wild West” - WIP Thread
Carrara Challenge #22: “Wild, Wild West”
You just finished watching TV series "Hell On Wheels", "Longmire" , "Firefly" (My personal favorite), movie "Wild, Wild West", "Back To The Future: Part III", spaghetti western with Clint Eastwood or some old western movie from
50's with John Wayne and you got inspired, or, maybe, you simply admire prairie/desert landscapes and their serenity with wild horses running around, tumbleweeds rolling across and snakes and lizards
crawling all over the place ...
Your objective: Create scene which has Wild West painted all over it.
Every subject which comes to your mind is allowed, fantasy, steam punk, sci-fi, or whatever floats your (steam-powered) boat
Basic rules will be:
1. Each participant may submit up to 2 images into the Challenge.
2. Images must be new (previously unpublished).
3. Images must be primarily set up in Carrara.
4. Images must be rendered in Carrara or in an external renderer for which there is a Carrara plug-in (e.g. LuxRenderer, Octane).
5. At least one WIP (work in progress) image must be posted to the WIP thread (this can be as simple as the scene setup, a pre/post post-work comparison or just a final image with a brief description of
the process you used or as complex as modeling rooms shots, shader setups or partial scene setups or test renders).
6. At least one object in the scene has to be modeled in Carrara.

I love Love LOVE Firefly!!!
This new baddy showing up in the Star Wars Universe when he did was awe-freaking-some! He's very much a cowboy-esque bounty hunter how ain't afeared a no Jedi - or anyone else, for that matter! (just a bit more inspiration from the Sci Fi genre)
Cad Bane, behind the scenes of Star Wars, the Clone Wars
Yep, me too, big fan here, I always wanted to render that scene from "Train Job" episode when train is rushing trough the desert and Serenity is hovering over it (I believe that scene was originally done in LightWave)
here's a start 'One false move and the Teddy Bear gets it.' Different amounts of post.
Okay... I'll... I'll do as you say... just... just don't hurt the bear!
Very nice work, head wax!
It would have turned out SO much better if they'd only have used Carrara! Kidding. Man, how that show got cancelled in the first season (or even at all) is beyond me, and I'm still writing nasty letters to FOX over that!
thanks Dart! oh if the bear gets hurt then it will be against daz's tos ;)
The man fired his pistol. The shot spanged of an old rusty nail embedded in the tree and ricocheted, slicing the rope in two. The rocking horse bolted, dragging the pram behind and knocking the weeping Mrs Bear backwards. As the chair toppled over, Mr Bear was flung into his surprised lover's arms. She kissed him in that PG-13 way that people only do for Daz forums, as the horse and buggy bounced off into the twilight. He would live to fight another day. The end.
Heh heh, love it! You missed your calling , unless you already write Hollywood scripts!
I do write novels (often with a high body count) . . .
Wow, Headwax. Excellent, and fun!
I am thinking about the "wild" part of wild west. I had bought a very cool wolf model by AM (Alessandro) that I haven't gotten to use. http://www.daz3d.com/wolf-by-am This might be the perfect opportunity. I thought I would try applying Carrara hair to the hairless wolf model. There is a version with hair but I think it is either Poser hair or Daz LAMH hair.
- Started with the base model with the default texture map and no hair.
- Dragged Carrara hair to the model level
- Did my best to apply some of the lessons from Holly's cat fur tutorial to the wolf hair. See http://carraracafe.com/tutorials/fur-tutorial-comicbook/
- For the hair texture, I copied the texture map in the color channel of AM's wolf model body and pasted it to the root and tip nodes of the hair shader tree.
- I saved the now hairy wolf to my content browser for future use.
A pack of wolves might be created with minor adjustments to the hair shader and a few morphs and size changes.
thanks diomede, and nice work yourself!
Thanks so much for the link to holly's tutorial. That explains everything I never even suspected existed with the hair room.
And she is very funny.
Why does LAMH always remind me of LMAO?
I have his bears, thanks for giving me insights how to get them all furred up.
there is also a downloadable pdf there for Holly's tutorial http://carraracafe.com/downloads/?did=39
thanks Milo ;)
some magical teddy, furry stuff happening here... I always find the fur to be a PITA...
each time I adjust the length of a section of hair it changes all sections... I'll keep at it..
but in the meantime I have made a Ranger Star, some rope and a tomahawk... no guessing what I'm getting together for my wild wild west scene..
Something politically incorrect I guess ;)
Great work guys!
I participated in the last one- kind of. I almost didn't finish and get an entry in due to real life time constraints. It looks like I'll be even busier for the next month.
I'm directing my first play for my community theatre group and I will be very busy with that. I'll probably pop in from time to time when I need to relax and decompress, but that's probably all I will have time for.
Good luck everybody!
And Stezza, I will be sorely disappointed if you don't find a way to stick a Koala wearing cowboy boots and spurs somewhere in your scene! ;-)
make my day
opera versus Carrara Evil? what a choice. ;)
So Bigh, is it one false move and the buzzard gets it?
Awesome!
I finally have some time to work on this. Awesome theme idea - I had about a dozen ideas right away (I almost went with cowboys riding dinosaurs - like they did ).
Here's my first entry. I kind of roughly box modeled the poncho - there's not much more to it than you see in the render though - and used Carrara's Dynamic Hair to add stray threads and a bit of texture, something I've been wanting to try for a while. I think it came out pretty well. The figure is G2M with several pieces of Carrara Dynamic Hair: the scalp, eyebrows, stubble, beard and chest hair are all separate pieces of hair. I'm calling this one "Portrait of an Outlaw."
Here's the render straight out of Carrara and the final post-worked version:
For my second entry I am going to try and model a six-shooter. I actually found one in my library but it's pretty low res and I want to see if I can make one.
Just to confirm a terrain counts as something modeld in Carrara?
Working on something.
Stezza - my guess is you are doing Jackie Chan's Shanghai Noon. :>
Bigh - an approach after my own heart. My favorite part of the image is looking at the windows. Nice.
Mark - wonderful portrait. Still time to use the dinosaurs in your second entry.
Chickenman - Here are some resources for using the terrain modeler and replicators.

I'm delaying starting my second entry because I am feeling particularly lazy today. Playing around with some filters and postwork on my portrait just for fun.
I have played with them before but wanted to confirm that they count as the item created in Carrara for the contest.
I have a western theme for the Chickenman from previous contests.
Just an FYI for anyone looking for sets- I am not sure if it is because I am a Platinum Club member or if it's a regular sale, or some combination of the two, but alot of the Old West buildings are showing up as on sale for $1.49 for me right now: http://www.daz3d.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=old+west
I've used most of these in Carrara and they work fantastically pretty much "out of the box."
