What?  Are you are not amazed at the big breakthrough that Nixie Tubes were?  surprisesad

Peggy Lee asked the same question:  "Is that all there is?"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sWTnsemkIs

One day 10,000 years ago Og came up to Charlie and showed him his new invention he called "the wheel".  Charlie looked bored and asked "Is that all it does?". smiley

Nixie tubes were pre-LED technology.  They used a tube filled with neon gas that glowed around a number shaped charged wire mounted on a stack of 10 transparent supports. enlightened

I remember in college that we spent quite a while using pencil & paper for learning logic circuit design and how to design a transister flip-flop circuit to drive the elements of a nixie tube by converting a four bit binary input into a one of ten output signal.  Back then computers didn't design logic circuits, people did.  With their brains. cool

There's a lot of physics in a Nixie tube.   And it was certainly more convenient than the alternatives at the time. indecision

nixie tubes need their own song

Poking around in my music collection and I rediscovered one of my favorite melodies again.  The first two minutes of Glazunov's 2nd Piano Concerto.  When hearing the first two minutes it sets a haunting hopeful mood that makes me feel good.  The remainder of this single movement concerto is enjoyable too and takes that initial mood through several swings toward the dark side but it's the first two minutes that has that feeling of hope, that all is not as bleak as I fear, and it hits my center spot.

Last night I was watching a old episode ("Five Little Pigs") of "Poirot" and every time each of the suspects recounted the events around the murder, the background music played a slightly different expression of Eric Satie's "Gnossienne #1"

Morning :)  Puffy white clouds - one shaped like a profile of Elvis Presley - sailing through the upside-down ocean of deep blue our sky turned into today alongside a colourful mob of wheezy hot air balloons advertising cheap. loans for houses, a sight best described as a little underwhelming on a cool Melbourne morning :)

...weather here is downright ugly, persistent rain (often heavy), wind, and cold. Was supposed to go to a friend's place for the day but not walking almost a mile to get there in these conditions (buses are all on Sunday schedules because of the holiday so it would take even longer on transit which still means standing out in the foul weather as not all bus stops have shelters).

...wish I could.  We are under a severe weather watch through tomorrow. with heavy snows in the mountains (which admittedly are needed) and localised flooding in the valleys (which we can do without)..

Always a shortage of drinking water here if you find some way to move those mountains down under ;)

Debating whether to brave going uptown to the movies this afternoon during (*shudder*) "Black Friday".  Wondering if I'll need to start an hour earlier just to get through the traffic. sad  Perhaps tis better to wait until next Tuesday?  But by then there may be more snow.  Winter is such a bitch! sad
