Hehe the latest software update to the iPad OS made me laugh, message to the effect that a critical update that prevents MS Exchange servers crashing must be installed. Awww, didn't know they cared

i was a ccmail admin during the lotus/exchange wars. MS was very sneaky.

Back in the late 90s, COMDEX switched to Lotus for the mail system. It was terrible! You know, if it was left running when you shut down, and you had a new message, Windows would just bounce back on without any notice whatsoever why. I finally figured it out one day. It was Lotus. it didn't warn you that it was still running and you had new messages, it didn't ask if you want to shut it down, it just forced Windows to stay open. it was weird. The desktop would grey out like it usually did when it was shutting down, then suddenly it would come back to full color and life!

    Dana

This one I can explain! :) When Windows shuts down, it sends a message to each running process asking if it's OK to shut down. If the app doesn't respond or says "no", Windows will silently cancel the shutdown and pop right back. The app is SUPPOSED to tell you what's going on in that case, not Windows.. but some apps misbehave. :-S

    Damn...this thing ate my reply.

Anyway, I understand about how Windows works. My point was that Lotus didn't play by the rules, it was not programmed according to MS's programming guidelines. There were several things it did that were not following standard Windows applications behavior. And it would prevent Windows from shutting down, but would not give any indication that it was the culprit, it gave no message at all. We were left guessing. I think I'm the first one who guessed.

Has anyone ever noticed that the only time the world beats a path to your door is when you're in the bathroom.

Stepping into the bathtub will make the phone ring. So will taking an afternoon nap.

This is so true. There have been several times when I've been waiting for a call. After a long wait, several hours, I decide they're not calling and get into the shower. As soon as I get wet, the phone rings. :ahhh:

And for sleep, I take a long time to fall asleep. Often, when I finally do, some charitable phone-a-thon begins!

    birthday cake for lunch, :)

they surprised me with birthday cake. well, i wasn't totally surprised, but i had hoped they didn't forget my birfday.

Wow! What a sugar overload that looks like! Sometimes those cakes have sickeningly sweet frosting. I never thought I'd ever say that. I have quite the sweet tooth. But in recent years I've found that some store bought or bakery cakes put it on a bit too heavy. I like whipped cream frostings more these days.

Can't they (we) all be friends? :)... I like the idea we're all "in this together" (a niche market, after all); what benefits one store benefits another. Most of my purchases are made either here or RMP... with occasional forays to RDNA (hate their "active ad" on the left though... forces a page refresh + new image every 4-5 seconds X(. Of course it's nice if the promos are made purely with "in-house" products... but that leads to walled-gardenism imho - it also disallows the possibility that somebody might have made the next Cool Thing(tm) that happens not to be sold here - copies/clones will then be made (of varying quality).

    $0.02c <(^_^).</p>

    Nice cake Misty! (^_^)d.

Cool morning, smoke smell has blown through -- yesterday morning there was a distinct smell of smoke on the air :^(.

I'd have Carrara 8 if they included it in that bundle of Pro versions they gave out for free last year. I'd have preferred that to Bryce. I have Carrara 7 Pro...still haven't done anything with it. It intimidates me. I open it, look around a little, try to do something...then close it! And I have other things that are more important to learn.

Well, to me...it's just wrong to make a main promo image for my sale, of a product that I don't even sell. It's misleading.

Besides, they make a big thing out of other vendors putting ads for non-DAZ things in the forums (witness a few outrages and disappearing vendors here lately). It seems hypocritical.

Oh, well...it's my complaint. This is a complaint thread. This one might be deleted, though.

Carrara can be kind of scary.. it's nowhere near as bad as Blender, though! :bug: The scariest 3D app is Houdini.. omg.. it takes a rocket scientist to use it! :bug:

I'm going to have a lot of time to learn new stuff as my temp residence is on the outskirts of town away from most things, and the bus stops running at 10:30pm so going out late is pretty much not an option until I find a new longer-term residence. :-S

Blender ain't so bad ;-). Power always has a price ~_~...

eta: this is your new "Value Village" place, out on the outskirts? maybe the enforced solitude will help focus Teh Loach on Teh Writingz? ;-)

Well, Blender makes me twitch! Now, Lightwave is powerful but I liked it when I used it - same with 3D Studio Max. :blank:

And yeah, the "Value Village" place is the one! And it will certainly help me focus on my writings, at least, that's one of my hopes! No housemates, no easy walking distance honky-tonk, WAY too far from the strip club.. and no excuses not to write or make music or art! :ahhh:

Housing is hard to find in March because of South by Southwest so I could be there for a month. it's not a ton more than renting an apartment so I can still save for that Core i7 system and a better tablet PC. :)

Yes a lot less smokey here as well, although next week is supposed to be more of a risk than last :). Eta We dodged a big bullet, the Epping fire was right on the suburban fence line and around a thousand firefighters plus ppl hopping out of their cars to put out spot fires along the Hume plus water bombers couldn't hold, was only a last minute wind change that kept it out of the more built up areas. Guess we are always a little reliant on plain luck this time of year.

I'm getting ready for work and I thought I heard a dog get injured. So I run to the window to see what it was... and now I'm mentally scarred. People, please shut your windows when you have sex, so neighbors don't have to be subjected to your alien love howls.

    Thank you.

"Alien Love Howls" will be the name of my next band. (No, that's a meme, no plans for a band.)

"It's All About Me (The Ego Song)"
parody by Tjohn (with apologies to Sammy Davis, Jr.)

Whether I'm right or whether you're wrong,
Whether I own everything in this world or just sing this song,
It's all about me, it's all about me.
Wouldn't you like to be who I am?

I want to acquire, great fortune and fame
And I won't just settle for less
'Til you all know my name.
It's all about me, it's all about me,
Wouldn't you like to be who I am?

    My eyes on the prize, it's now in my grasp;
And if any of you don't like it,
You can just kiss my a__!
It's all about me, it's all about me.
Wouldn't you like to be who I am?

I'll go it alone, I don't need your help.
I"ll do anything that I want,
    And I'll do it myself.
It's all about me, it's all about me.
You losers can cry, I wish you'd all die,
    It's all about me!
