PSA: Dealing with Internet Trolls on DAZ Forum

DAZ's forum software offers a great way you can deal with Internet trolls, if you ever encounter any here. Here's an article to help you recognize them:

https://www.webroot.com/us/en/home/resources/tips/pc-security/you-cant-win-an-argument-with-a-troll

You can save yourself a bit of wasted, unproductive emotion by ignoring users you identify as trolls. Here's how:

  1. Click on the troll's name under the avatar icon in one of the troll's posts.
  2. When the troll's profile appears, look for the gear icon far to the right of the troll's user name. Click on it.
  3. Choose the IGNORE option and follow the prompts.

I have attached screenshots showing exactly what to look for as you perform these steps. Here's hoping you have pleasant browsing here at DAZ's' forum!

Step 1 - Click on User's Name.png
146 x 165 - 12K
Step 2 - Click on Gears to the Right of User's Name.png
1024 x 200 - 32K
Step 3 - Click Ignore.png
225 x 174 - 14K

I'm going to take it a step further: you can also ignore complete topics that you are not interested in, so these topics don't keep showing up in your new posts list. Such as topics in a language that you don't speak, or topics you know you will never read. Unfortunately, this is not supported by the forum software natively, but you can find a script for it on my webpage, it's called "ignore forum threads". It does wonders. :)

What's nice is the option to view a post anyway.

so you can click that and go 'oh right, that's why I'm ignoring them.'

So that's why I rarely get any replies. Here I was thinking the forum was quiet nowadays.

I would prefer not to see if those on ignore had posted myself, I rarely if ever click and read their posts and as Timmins says if I do it reminds me why they are on ignore cheeky

The best way to deal with someone you think is a troll on the Daz 3D Forums is to report them, by clicking on the flag under their avatar.  A note of the report is sent to all members of the Daz Froum team, so whoever is on duty at the time can deal with it.

This is one of the reasons that Forums have moderators, and the Daz Forum team is genuinely a team, and wrok together as a team to try to keep the forums happy.

Edited to add that they are also good at typonese, both posting it and reading it.

I came to the realization long ago that the only reason I might get upset or offended by others' posts is because I ALLOW them to upset me. And just because someone doesnt agree with me doesnt make them bad or a troll. Often it comes down to refusing to be proven wrong, even if we are. And being wrong isnt the end of the world, though some might think it is. So IMO its a great skill to learn not to be upset by those who disagree with you. I'm wrong a lot of times. And maybe the other guy has a point, or something i can learn from. And if the other guy just refuses to admit he's wrong, then thats his problem not mine. No need to give him power over my emotions.

The problem is that 'generally being an ahold' or 'constantly asking really stupid questions and getting huffy when people reasonably engage with them' often fall below actionable levels.

Moderation has limits and sometimes when you see a pattern easier to moderate your own feed. As it were.

I use a tablet or phone to browse the web so ignoring a topic via a script will not work.  I looked at two profiles and do not see ignore user, Miss Bad Wolf and Chohole.  Have not looked anyone else's yet.  Maybe I can ignore someone other than Miss Bad Wolf and also Chohole.  I can flag Chohole's post but not block her.

Try my username, Miss Bad Wolf. I know the system won't show you the menu item to ignore yourself; and because Chohole is a moderator, perhaps you can't ignore her. Me, I'm nobody, so you should certainly be able to ignore me :-)

On many forums moderators are unignorable, but I haven't tried it here. ;)

The other sad thing is that new topics still show, even if the user is someone you are ignoring. I've gotten bitten by that; 'huh, this thread seems kind of stupid... why am I ... oh dang it, the poster is someone I'm ignoring. Duh.'

    Super mod powers.

Plus, as is widely known, they get 87.39% off the store (on top of other discounts). You can't ignore that!

I haven't encountered any trolls here. To me trolls are deliberate trouble makers. I don't use ignore any longer. On my tablet I  can't unignore someone so I have to use a computer to get access to all the full features plus my curiousity usually gets the better of me.

Someone once told me that of all the posts in all the forums in the entire internet, the phrase you are least likely to see is this: "Hey, y'know you're right. I guess I was wrong. Thanks for the info."
  • IvyIvy Posts: 7,165

    Ha!

According to a message I got last night from one of the daz forum policy enforcers, I was told there is no such thing as a group of people on the Internet, forum or youtube know as troll, when i had mentioned it in one of my comments. ...lol They must be very new here. or I think someone is really confused. because I have been harassed for years on my daz animations on YouTube and sharecg.com to the point i had to file a police report .   so I can tell you first hand they do exist .   But I only had to use the daz ignore option once  here, I won't menetion who they are. But. I rarely, if ever use the daz forum  ignore option to ignore people.  I try to respect peoples opinions even if i may not agree with them.

I agree completely, ebergerly. Not saying it's always easy, or I'm always successful, but I do feel that some responsibility falls upon me to *not* be offended.

I also feel that while living inside bubbles can make us feel comfortable, interacting only in an echo chamber can be dangerous - the world outside of the bubble doesn't cease to exist.

    0 people on ignore.

I don't have an ignore list either but I have leave a conversion when I see it veering towards the same path that I have no interest in participating in.

When necessary, I ignore things the good old-fashioned way. I did report a poster once, but he was attacking a vendor on a personal level. Then there was that time where we were getting spammed every day. I reported those a couple of times.

There are a couple of frequent posters I find "ignore-worthy," so I frequently skip reading what they posted; skip the thread altogether if they are dominating. Not a major issue, as the mods usually step in and close the topic after a day or two and it scrolls off into oblivion.

is not a good idea, I wrote forum troll on my avy as a sarcastic response to a long gone troll and it got me marked as one by the wrong audience.

Still not sure I have entirely cleared my besmirched reputation.

I thought super mods get 100% off on everything.   Or is that the QA department I am confused with?

Problem is, most people these days think "trolling", is posting opinions they don't agree with lol.
