    It's a good point, Ivy.

There are many forms of being a horrible person, and 'troll' is only one particular form.

I only have one person on "Ignore", and it's not because he's a troll (in fact, he is usually quite congenial).  I just find his thoughts annoying for some reason that I can't explain, so I choose not to read them.  It's my problem, not his.  It's weird how some people just get under your skin, when there is no good reason for it.

    I agree 100%.
I just wish more people felt that way.

"In some places if you are not politically correct, or agree with
their point of view or opinion, then the group will properly
     considered you a troll."

    This is quite true
The term troll is defined by the culture of the forum
in fact in some online communities
    (NOT THIS ONE!!!) angel

it is not a matter of "political correctness"
and more a matter of  being considered a "troll"
for not sticking to the mutual validation ,echo chamber, narrative
regarding the software to which that community is blindly loyal.

And also there are floating standards applied to different posters
based on wether they have been identified as advocates of the"Enemies software"
as opposed to an avowed "loyalist"

So when a certified loyalist complains about the software it is considered
    well meaning "tough love"
when an "enemy combatant" quotes the loyalist and says "I agree"
he is promptly warned,by the moderator , about his "software bashing"

wolf359, I suspect that's the real truth behind much of the internet "troll" phenomenon in many forums, though few will admit it...   smiley

The thing is, while the term is misapplied plenty, there is definitely a frequent type of person who posts almost purely to wind up other people.

They sea lion, they are 'just saying,' they ask endlessly for proof, move the goalposts, change the topic, go quiet and then come back with the same point a while later as if nobody had made any points in response, they taunt people for being emotional in response to horrible comments, they're just joking, this is just for their amusement, why so serious, etc.

They harrass and drain and scrupulously stay juuuust on the right side of the rules, leech a forumspace and generally poison discourse.

Thankfully, the mods here have done a pretty solid job of keeping those sorts of people from dominating.

The one person that I put on ignore did this often on the Carrara forum.  Many people put this person on ignore.  Many people reported this person to the mods.  Although I think we have great mods, and know that they have a very difficult job, the problem persisted a very long time before the mods took action. I think the poster has been banned, but not sure.  The person knowingly misrepresented what the software could or couldn't do when new users asked questions on the forum, and later would hedge by inserting adjectives like Carrara's version was not a "world-class (function)" or "cutting edge (whatever)."  If someone from Smith Micro had been hired to spread misinformation and discord on the Daz forum (in this case Carrara) to keep new users from trying it out, couldn't have done a better job.   As a result, I am sure that I am too sensitive when people who obviously don't know what Carrara can and can't do post that Carrara can't do something, which it can.

    I apologize.

While we should try not to become emotionally attached
to software packages that we did not even develop,

I can sympathize with your frustration at
bold declarations about the capability of a program
by people who clearly have not used the program
let alone pushed it too it limits.

This is exactly the case for me. One person on ignore, not a troll, just annoying, and I sometimes click to read their thoughts, depending on the topic matter.  But it keeps my stress levels down to get to make that choice.

I have yet to see a single troll on these boards, where the moderation is very strict, posts get deleted silently (instead of, a more constructive, edit) and everybody seems to loves everyone. :)
But okay, others people definition of a troll might and likely do differ from mine.

Speaking for me, I like to read other peoples thoughts, no matter if bad or good. It takes a damn lot to get on my ignore list. In 20+ years I blocked 2 people across many MMORPGS, IRC, IM, Boards, etc. pp. Other people have other thoughts, if I don't agree, I carry on. I'm not for safe spaces at all, which are a big thing these days, sadly. *shrugs*

Feel free to ignore me and have a nice weekend! ;-D
