..yeah, that's sometimes the breaks particularly with used equipment.

So been doing some fast and furious window shopping at Newegg & Frys. Newegg beats Frys out price wise and has includes customer feedback, both pro & con, on most items sold. Also the experience I had with Frys shorting me on hardware for my Antec P193 case (it was one of their "open box" items) pretty much soured me on doing business with them. Besides, I can't get down there until Monday at the earliest anyway.

Never had an issue with Newegg and because they are in California turn around time is usually about 2 - 3 days to where I live. Still not overly enthused about having what I consider a fairly delicate item handled via UPS, however so far, everything I ordered from them has made it to me intact. Even the outer cartons had no dents or crushed corners.

So I pretty much know I'm not going to get better than I already had for under 100$ I settled on a choice between these two:

Both are 21.5" (a tad bigger than the one I have) 1900 x 1080 resolution, and are IPS displays which, as I understand, are superior for CG work due to better colour quality. Both get pretty good reviews as well as a few small knocks, but overall, the reviews are rather favourable.

    Dell S2240L

This one doesn't come with an HDMI cable (6 - 7$ extra) or DVI-D The cable is small potatoes.

Not sure what the difference/advantages between DVI-D, D-sub and HDMI are for the type of work we do.

    ASUS VS229H

While a bit more expensive, This one has all three video formats and includes the optional cables though apparently according so some comments it needed to be recalibrated out of the box. Also there was a lot of concern that the stand is rather wobbly. There is however a special promo code for ASUS IPS displays that knocks another 10% off the price so it comes in pretty price wise comparable to the Dell unit (though the Dell monitor is a 50% off special weekend deal for what lists as a more pricey unit - I'd have to order that one by tomorrow).

Shipping for both is free as long as I don't request expedited service.

Kind of a "six of one half dozen of the other" situation.

Before you buy, check buy.com, or now known as rakuten.com. I find their prices are usually much better for these things. I bought my Samsun T220 Touch of Color monitor from them. 20,000:1 dynamic contrast and super fast refresh time. Shipping on many items like this is usually free for standard shipping, which can save a bunch sometimes.

I haven't gotten notices for this thread...again! And real life has been a...rhymes with itch. I'm off to bed, fell asleep trying to watch the news.

There's a way to use Windows 7 WITH Aero? ;)

(I have it turned off. Too distracting, consumes too much computing power for my taste, I'd rather spare every bit I can muster for render-work.)

I thought Aero was pretty neat, but I disabled it after a while for a similar reason. Rendering stuff takes a higher priority over all else :)

In other news, I'm enjoying a big bowl of split pea with ham :3

    ...Thank you.

I just checked there and didn't find anything for less than I already have wishlisted at Newegg save for "refurbished" units which means "used". If I'm going to shell out 120 - 125$ on my incredibly tight income, I'd rather do so for a new unit with a full warranty.

Furthermore none of the ones in my price range there are IPS displays. I've compared the IPS to standard backlit LCD displays before, and the onscreen image is a lot cleaner and crisper. I'm not all that concerned about superfast refresh rates as I don't do gaming or stream vids on the workstation. Colour depth and accuracy is far more important.

I am also in a critical situation here and cannot spend a lot of time to check different outlets as I'm at a standstill until I can get a replacement. With Newegg, if I put the order in tomorrow, I can expect to see it by no later than Wednesday.

Olaf and the Giant Chicken, a Mock Epic Poem: Part Two

    Olaf stocked up on supplies
Watching the weather with wary eyes
    Westward then would Olaf head
To see where bright shield-maiden led
He bought a tent, and shoes for snow
No telling how far he'd have to go
So he set forth on foot, alone
The wind did howl and scream and moan
But Olaf was willing to take a lickin'
To beat up on a giant chicken.

    Westward ho did Olaf travel
This mystery he hoped to unravel
    Rumors Olaf did hear many
But the best was from some ninny
    Rubbing snow into his hair
This clod declaimed to empty air
"I saw a woman with shield so bright
Fire in her eyes, gave me a fright
Just two days past when she came through
I'd run like heck if I were you."

"Aha!", thought Olaf, "I think I'm near!"
So forth he set, without much fear
On feet he put the shoes for snow
Becasue the stuff did thicker grow
A good thing this, for never fail
    It made apparent another trail
    Olafs heart began to race
Finally of shield-maiden there was a trace
    Olafs hopes began to quicken
Of battle with a giant chicken.

Next day at dawn did Olaf spy
A brilliant gliimer against the sky
On the horizon he saw a shape
With scale-mail shimmering like a drape
Olaf cried "Wait!" and started to run
But he had just barely begun
When on a snow-shoe he did trip
And fell right down into a dip
His pride did take a mighty blow
As he lay cursing in the snow.

    (to be continued)

    hehe fabulous :>D

    ...well bad news.

Got home to turned on the workstation to discover that my display croaked. There's a large white rectangular area that takes up about 20% of the lower left of screen with some random lines and what looks like a black "splash" on one end as well as several small red artefacts along the top edge of hte screen. There also appears to be a few dead pixels.

Definitely is the unit and not my GPU or the cable for it persists even when I have the system shut down and the video cable disconnected.

It's one I had for a while (wasn't brand new) so probably just reached the end of its life.

So much for getting any new work done for a while as I really cannot afford a new one right now given I'm still looking for new employment, and have no backup. Also being the weekend no way to get to Frys to get even a cheapie replacement for the time being as this is a rather delicate component that I don't care to purchase online only to find it was damaged in shipping when it arrives.

Bummer too as it was a nice 20" one. Not 1080P but still pretty decent resolution.

Oh noes. My old Apple b23 inch died a few weeks ago, A$700 for a 24 inch second hand

I did! I gutted ten kilos of strawberries yesterday, with help from my friends. We made jam, a pie, and frozen some for the winter. :D

    FUNNNNNN!

    Non-Complaint:

Just bought Volume 1 of Xfrog's plant collection on the last day it was on sale ^_^

Downloading them nao. I expect to be done with that later tonight or early tomorrow! XD

Also has a Biguana render (Two of 'em) in the works. One scene, two angles. Plenty of fun with Indigo's light layers too. Is pretty cool to change the intensity and temperature (Warmth/coolness) of the HDR lighting as it's rendering. Didn't know I could do that - I thought it was restricted to just regular lights!

Today it dawned so bright and early
I slept in a bit but I still feel surly
It's going to be an awful day
Poor KK has a dead display
The heat is rising, it's way too hot
By the time it gets cool, the day is shot
    Installing content day and night
Sometime I'll do a render, right?
Of doing that there is some doubt
I cannot find an unflatable trout
I'm hungry, and a bell it rings
I'll send out for some chicken wings!

    (hee hee hee)

Just need more renders like this and maybe someone will pick up the task of writing a D|S (And/Or Carrara...) exporter for Indigo :P
Is only one of several renders. I liked this one the best. There was neutral lighting, different setups, and etc.
Second one has more extreme lighting to show off the SSS effect a bit moar...

...nope no membership, no car (as I don't drive) to get to the local one here, and nobody I know with a membership. Have to limit myself to around 125$ which is already going to be a tough enough drain on my extremely limited budget.

I could have let it render an extra hour, but felt this was "good enough".

It's my own fault - I wanted to be able to grab anything, at any instant, to produce any kind of scene - without fully understanding how hard it would be to find, let alone REMEMBER, anything!

I've managed to get the DS 4.6 CMS to find non-Daz items, but the maintenance of the thing is slow and painful and it's in no way as flexible as Finder was (sigh).

I need something like AlienBrain, but that doesn't cost thousands per seat. Urgh.
