Something I've been working on - Harpsburg.[Commercial]

Harpsburg is a Bavarian themed village I've been working on sporadically for a while. I have a few buildings nearly completed and the cobbled stone streets are mostly done too. Fairly happy with the current sunny day lighting but still a lot more to do - more buildings, street "furniture" such as street lamps, benches, planter boxes, fountains - grime and detritus on the road/pavement.

So, I was aware that there was thing called "Bullet" physics added to Carrara in version 8 - but hadn't really paid too much attention to it - "that's for animators" I foolishly thought in my ignorance. Anyway, I stumbled upon the soft-body physics and doesn't it just make very nice cloth items like the tablecloths I have now added to the scene.

Some more work done on the bakery.

Sweet. I've used it for getting the sag right on ropes and cables too. :)

Have just about finished another building. Should speed up a bit now as I have got enough building parts to throw together numerous vartiations.

    It's just incredible.
I've been looking to all the details in the picture and I'm not sure I've found them all :-).
I only wish that, one day, I could come closer to your level...

I love all the little detailing with the window boxes, and the tables & chairs outside etc. Plus your texturing is awesome. :)

Every time you come up with a new project I immediately fall in love with it. I can't wait to see how this progresses. It looks amazing already!

There will be "some" trees, but this is mainly an urban scene. :)

This takes a lot longer to make what with all the uv mapping and textures to photoshop/paint. And my own self criticism drives me to spend 4 hours modelling some curtains in the cafe you can hardly see anyway (much more obvious when using full GI and not just AO) 'cause my first attempt just looked wrong... unless someone knows a way to use softbody physics to simulate some cloth bunched up on a curtain rod.

If you don't mind creating that in another app, I think this is a case where Marvelous Designer can be of great help. If you don't own it, I believe a free copy of the older version (2) was provided with some magazine recently. You can import a prop against which you want to drape and if it's just a piece of cloth, you wouldn't need to bother learning the pattern making. But the cloth simulation is fast and realistic in MD. And you can import the resulting Obj back into Carrara to reduce the poly count and untriangulate, if you wish. MD will also do a good job with UVs.

I certainly hope to have it complete well before Oktoberfest... mmm a soft pretzel with butter and salami washed down with a cold pilsener.

@Antara - will definitely have a look into that!

I certainly noticed the curtains, partly because I've been trying to hide the (lack of) insides of a room while still having decent-looking windows!

unless someone knows a way to use softbody physics to simulate some cloth bunched up on a curtain rod.

you can use soft-body attach to create a few "curtain hooks" by attaching some primitives to the curtain, then you can animate the motion of the "hooks" to open / close the curtain, or just to create the shape you want,..
you could also add some forces to add a little bit of breeze.

Then you should be able to run a simulation,. then export the model as an OBJ , or ,.. at different frames to create morph targets.

    Hope it helps :)

Ah well, the curtains have been (painstakingly) modelled by hand now in the vertex modeller. New on the left - old on the right. Bless you google, instead of trying to make something from memory there is an almost infinite supply of reference material at your fingertips. I needed reference images that showed just how the cloth was supposed to fold and bunch up - google "cafe curtains" and voila!
